Hey, im not trying to be offense to anyone when i say this, but most of the comments posted are ignorant and unintelligent. first of all im half black and half white, and personally i think award ceremonies like this is bullshit, it does nothing but generalise black people as a whole. @somuch4peace - The reason for the award show, is because you do not see 95% of these artist on the other award shows as presenters, as performers and on their red carpet. So just because half the world will see Beyonce on every other award show, doesn't mean that their should not be a platform set up to highlight and celebrate artist and entertainers that are significant to the black community at large. Their are award shows for Latino's, Asians, even Aborigines, y are people so shortsighted.

somuch- its not the black music awards, it is the Black Entertainment Television Award show. That has been the name of the station since its existence. They could call it "Not the MTV Awards", or the "Urban Awards", but at the end of the day, somebody is gonna take offense to it no matter what. I am not in defense of BET as a network as to what they do or how it is run, but I am in defense of their existence and the option it gives to people who are not represented widely in mainstream.

Since you're only 21 you're not aware that for decades award winning performances were turned in by by people of color who were denied acclaim by mainstream media. So the BET awards were created to celibrate said performers. Furthermore the only place to see music videos of people of color was on BET because MTV wouldn't until being forced to by Epic Records and MJ. BTW all the "weirdness" was generated by MJ's own PR people to make him seem larger than life and keep people curious.

And that "Highest rated award show on cable telvision" BS that you threw out is incredibly misleading considering how many people (generally of middle class stature and up) have television service packages beyond basic cable and as a result, watch a myriad of different channels which is why Nielsen rating data is very mixed when it comes to telvision viewership.

The reason BET would be so high on cable-only ratings data is because the people who have cable telvision subscriptions are generally poorer and yes, generally, minorities (AKA black and hispanic mother fuckers). No offense but if they actually had a considerable amount of talent. They would be invited for instance the grammys. Fair enough highlighting black stars but half of the people at the awards are mediocre at best. Also blacks make up 13% of the US population so why should they have the same amount of stars as Caucasians who make up the majority.

I'm sorry to say this but the BET awards 2009 sucked. It wasn't like last year's and I get that it was a last-minute thing but I didn't like it. I felt like the night was about Jamie Foxx and it wasn't really concentrated on Michael but I'll give props to Ciara. She really tried her best to do that tribute and I know she cares about Michael's death when I saw her get emotional. R.I.P Michael Jackson. Chris should've been there but too bad Jay-Z stopped that from happening.
