I haven't been back to NYC to see this new fountain, but remember being told a story about the original fountain: the center pipe was about 9 inches in diam. and could shoot water 109 feet, a few feet higher than the Metropolitan Opera House seen in background in this video. On the opening night of the Met, they "showed off" the fountain, but there was a bit of a breeze, and all that water came down on the arriving patrons in their tuxes and gowns and furs. They didn't do it again...ever.
