Even this one looks different from other dummy performances he has done, it looks like he does it a little wrong and says one more time to correct it!
WSL is Yip Man's front man when comes to beimo. Also, WSL has Yip Man's blessing with slight modifications to the forms because his techniques has been proven in real fights.
This is slightly different to the 100% original dummy form as taught by Ip Man.
Despite being different the man's timing, ging, and efficiency of movement is absolutely excellent. He has simply added some sections because of attack combinations he personally would like to train against.
The point of a dummy is that it is a solid object and one's movement is dictated by it's shape. bashing the dummy goes against concept of wing chun ie.not to use opposing force.
All I would like to ask is " why is the dummy form not the same as the one shown by GM Ip Man? and why does to order make any difference? as i understand both GM ip Man who was a great fighter and teacher and sifu Wong was also a great fighter as i have been told by a few pepole. just asking and i really don't want to have people making S*** over this I would just like some thoughts
ip man thaught a 10 section dummy in the early fifties later he taught a 8section dummy and even later another 8 section dummy ip mans early teachings differ from his later teachings
could be he saw flaws in his earlier teaching mayby it had something to do with his opium habit chu chong ting explains that because ip man was already very old mayby he had forgotten some stuff and later remembered but didnt bother telling his earlier students
Thats why different individuals have totally different Dummy Form's characters.
If observing GM Ip Man's practicing Dummy , we can know that GM practice Dummy with sliding around it with whole body's harmonization especially with very smooth and flexible Horse's and Steps' moving, seldomly with very strong punching on the Dummy. This needs many many years to reach this summit. This is one of the greatest skills from GM Ip Man.
This is an instructional video. SiGung Wong Shun Leung is performing each movement slowly and deliberately so you and I can see exactly what he is doing.
Personally i like it. He's obviously focused and working technique rather than beating on a piece of wood at a million miles an hour like the majority of other dummy vids out there. People treat it like a heavy bag when IMO its purpose is more akin to a protractor. Correcting your structure - angles - heigh.
The only i time i issue force when im using the dummy is inch power (or a snap) with each action. Anything more is just inflating your own ego :)
I agree. His form looks solid, and it looks like he's working the dummy the way one should. So many WC guys on youtube think youre supposed to beat the $h!t out of the dummy at a million miles an hour (*cough* Leung Ting school *ahem*) but its not really about that. Its also nice to see that Wongs WC looks so close to what Ive learned (Ip Ching lineage) its indicative that the style hasnt mutated much from what Ip Man taught, at least apparently not in the Wong Shun Leung or Ip Ching lines.
I often use the bench press as an anolgy for those that smash the dummy as fast as they can. Do you get better results having correct posture/form going slowly with a bench press or do you get better results pushing it up and down as fast as you can ?
The dummy should be though of and trained in the same way IMO.
When you speed through a bench press your posture suffers and you dont work the muscles equally and efficently.
I am not sure how good is master Wong. This is the first time I saw his footage. I do think it is not smooth. Especially his foot work to get in the dummy. I personally think the Ip Man's son Ip Chun come much more natural and smooth. (Even with his age.) If you got a chance to see his chi cao with others people. He is very good with defends in one hand only, not both hand. That tell his confidence and understanding of the distance. This is the most important things in Combat.
You think somehow IP CHUN is better than WSL? Ip Chun started Wing Chun when he was 40 something, and it was only because Sigung Wong Shun Leung scolded him for not working.
Do you realize when Wong Shun Leung was doing Beimo, Ip Chun didn't even start the siu lim tao yet?
WSL has battle experience and understanding Ip Chun will never get in 2 lifetimes.
His "one hand" defense is laughable to say the least. The guy attacking must either be retarded or 80 too.
Master Wong. Please don't blame me what I am talking about as u ar in the heaven rightnow. From MArt point of view, your movement showed hard and moving phase by phase. It seems heavy burden on yr spirit. Philosophically, WCKuen movement is smooth, soft and continuous during practicing because it was created by "Ng Mui". But, anyway, maybe other things behind. Many thanks for your great show and guidance. Salute!!
Wing Chun is in no means "soft", it is explosive and devastating, at least in the WSL Lineage. And the Ng Mui part is only a legend, there is a great bunch of Kung Fu styles which pretend to be created by her.
You are misunderstood my meanings. What I mean is that when training with dummy, it is better to be soft in continuous movement. I accept you treat Ng Mui as a Legend, so please put Master Yim Wing Chun in my comment. I don't say WC is "solf" only, actually it is a very useful real fighting MArt. But the explosive and devastating power is not from wooden dummy training indeed.
After thinking awhile, we perhaps have different meanings on the word "Soft". I am a chinese. So, in chinese's way of thinking, soft is not equal to weak. In our traditional culture, soft means the thing like water. We can't break water by punching or kicking. But, you know the power from the water cannon!Besides, soft means a thing like rubber plastic ring. It can rebound when we push it because it can restore its potential power. It can hurt people when we extend it to a certain length.
So.. What I mean is that, when practicing dummy, the body movement either punching or kicking or other things could demonstrate the strength as elastic rubber. It is a behavior as long-period training, and will show out automatically. The action should not be rigid (hard).
Dear phillipw, I don't mean to offend you, but after viewing some of your videos I have to say that you have misunderstood something fundamental about wing chun. You talk big things about water and soft power, but can't even do a proper punch. My advice: find a good teacher and start from scratch...
well as i can say Master Wong intended to be not to be soft there for sure he can move what your saying he's just want to "demo" the form as your viewing it in slowmo, im pretty sure if there's no camera there and if it's not a "DEMO" he woudn't move that way off course you know what i mean..
Even this one looks different from other dummy performances he has done, it looks like he does it a little wrong and says one more time to correct it!

Hi SifuBilly
Traditional WC starts at 3 kinds of sequences of movements. After knowing well in 3,
it will begin Dummy Form which is the openning one's own potential and one's own road in WC.

@SifuBilly It is because the techniques are the important things, not the order in which they are done. :)

sections 4 & 5 are exchanged into reverse order(not that it matters much)...other than that... Fantastic!

@DrewNZ I agree, although speed and a little snap, as you say, don't hurt. As long as you are well grounded and the hips are providing the torque.

Wong Shun Leung taught Bruce Lee most of his Wing Chun and Bruce said that Wong was the best fighter in the Wing Chun system.
