  • Doesn't feel like a Mozart opera the way they did it...

  • Sorry, but I hate it.... Had to turn it off after the most ridiculous "Là ci darem la mano" in history. Even if you paid me, I wouldn't see an opera produced by the Los Angeles Opera.

  • 0:44 the guy gropes the ladys boob... xD bet he's havin fun xP

  • what's a strange interpretation of these opera....I think I prefer classic in classic music...for me it's too....just strange - in my opinion the best word:))

  • What is it with regietheater? Despite trying to be "new," it's become a cliche of its own. Despite trying to "bring in a new audience," it's pushing us away instead, and they have the nerve to call us snobs?

  • Is this available on DVD?

  • an abomination

  • I'm sure Mozart is rolling in his grave, wherever that might be....

  • dilettante.

  • Every freakin production I see Schrott in is utter crap. Now I know to expect it whenever I see his name.

On the flipside, I did love the singer who did Dalla Sua Pace. Gorgeous voice. Though I can't help but think of Lady Gaga when they show Donna Anna. !!

  • Just like LA to ruin one of the greatest pieces of all time by replacing talent with good looks. The description alone sums it all up. "The sexy and sensual Erwin Schrott, yadda yadda yadda". Thats not what opera is supposed to be about. Its about the music.

  • Does anyone know if there is a DVD of this production? I saw it in LA and I'm just dying to have it now. Perhaps, there's one of the 2003 production?

  • What a cast, what a singing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Charles Castronovo's Ottavio!! Finally, an Ottavio with a burnished, heroic, elegant sound. We believed ''a vendicar io vado!'' Exquisite singing, I was blown away......

  • I couldn't agree with you more. Charles Castronovo's Dalla Sua Pace (at 1:41) is stunning. Left me wanting to hear the whole aria. I wish he would record a Mozart recital album. His singing in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail is also spectacular. You can watch that by typing: "Charles Castronovo Konstanze".

  • I remember this. It was horrible! Erwin Schott's sexy Don Giovanni was all people cared about. He sings great but he lacks the wicked bite and devilish quality I prefer. He was too heroic in this and I see Don G as a villain. the whole production was CRAZY. It looks like a coloring book of Don Giovanni for children or the Sesame Street version. Seriously the look did not fit the story. This was a very disappointing Don G

  • For a moment, I thought the Don was chasing the Big Bird instead of Zerlina. (perhaps he was?!)

  • she's not a yellow big bird. She' Zerlina dressed up in a ridiculous outfit. The costumes were lousy, this whole production stunk. This is not how Don G should look

  • who is the idiot that make the scene clothes?

  • marius trelinsky

  • Am I correct in thinking that the Don is both a serial rapist and a pedophile?

  • Terrific observation, flattilre! But, in the words of the inimitable Anna Russell, that's the beauty of Grand Opera - you can do anything - as long as you SING it!

  • So true. And so amazing!

  • Well, in that time 18 was old age for a single woman, that and many other aspects that do not apply to our common era. However, and if you saw the complete opera, you will see that Don Juan got what he deserved for being a lecherous man.

  • @flattilre Wrong and pretty flat. Desist and try to understand the drama. Think of the culture of honour and dueling, look at the women running after (Done Elvira) and loving being seduced (Zerlina) by a 120% Man. Read something on the protagonist / the real Don Giovanni. It's complicated.

  • @flattilre yeah, right

  • I attended this production but I was dissatisfied (imagine someone having to have this be their first opera ever) it's too post modern, it's crazy looking, the costumes all look like crayola crayons and the music doesnt even fit the horrid look of this production design...I want my original 18th century style sets/costumes/styles...does no one make operas with the original look the composers envisioned ? God sometimesI wish in the 19th century or early 20th century when they had better opera !

  • I don't mind modern but there is no need to distract from Mozart's music with over-the-top production and costume design.

  • I do not like modern looks for opera...opera is not a modern art form..it's an older art form that should stick to its original semblance and stick to the period of the story in the opera...I took a friend to this (it was his first opera) since I'm not always in touch with this friend I have no idea if he TRULY enjoyed the first experience.considring all the crazy designs....this is not Don Giovanni..this is LA Opera's arthouse post modern crap version...

  • I agree. It seems more and more operatic productions, especially in Europe, are being presented in modern, even avant garde, ways lately. Not always appropriate, sometimes just "too clever" and usually very distracting - but not too distracting for my taste when they present Erwin Schrott in skintight white satin trousers ...

  • I guess more avid opera-goers dig this stuff because it's something different. I'd probably be bored if I saw another Don G. set in the time it was written. I'd rather introduce myself to an opera by renting a DVD of it done in the traditional setting, then going to see a new interpretation of it.

Me? I loved LA's Don G! Costumes were of the period, only tweaked into something crazy- And the set put the characters out in space/time...

I think it said that this story is timeless.

  • I actually saw the 2003 original production and I thought it was ok. Erwin was there and Anna Christy was a wonderful Zerlina! Yes, the costumes and esceneography were out of the times, but somehow at that time it all came together for all the cast was singing wonderfully! It was wild, but it was fun and worth it at the same time!

  • what a strange outfit Zerlina has!

  • what is being sung at 0:25?

  • It is the duet between donna anna and don ottavio, act 1, scene 3. She's making him promise that he will help her gain vengeance against the man who attacked her and killed her father (don giovanni).

  • @cocaineblossom Act I Duet "Fuggi, crudele, fuggi".

  • It's difficult nowadays to picture another Don Giovanni on stage delivering the power Schrott gives to the character. Convincing, charming.

He has the look and feel of Don Juan.

  • Oh great... Warsaw's production of this opera looks almost the same as this one. No wonder - same director, same costume designer.

  • So why 2065? Is there any special significance to the numbers?

  • So why 2065? Is there any special significance to the numbers?

  • I Love hoiw they staged the duet between anna and ottavio when they sink into the ground

  • Love this opera!

  • Oh Erwin, what a stud.

Does anybody know who the tenor is in this production? His singing is beautiful.

  • His name is Charles Castronovo. Definitely beautiful voice, and really sweet and funny guy.

  • Gorgeous voice..nearly brought a tear to my eye

  • Schrott has a very good voice, a hdansome figure, sings and acts pretty well. But I prefer a more classic production. Anyway, I thank Los Angeles Opera for this video. Alguso

  • Tasty!
