@FollowYourLogic First off, there were plenty of "grunge" bands around before Nirvana even got big. Mudhoney, Green River, and of course, "The Godfathers of Grudge" The Melvins. All Nirvana did was make grunge mainstream. And that's because their grunge was a more poppy commercial version of grunge. Not hating on Nirvana in any way.
