it takes a fuckin genius to go deep down inside and pull some shit out like this then compose it into a song. this what these "artist" dont understand today, u got to go in and pull some shit out. let life be your lyrics not fantasy.
@ra2ch3id4 This song is about drug addiction. Its autobiographical. "I know I go to the Boy who makes slaves out of men". Boy was a street name for Heroin. The BG vocal refrain in the outro, "I did the best I can" is Marvin acknowledging the struggle to overcome the addiction, but ultimately he succombs to the Boy (Heroin) who makes slaves out of men. Marvin battled cocaine addiction for much of his life till the fatal encounter with his father.
i feel like this right now... ain't seen nothing but trouble baby.. hate when i get like this.. talk crazy i'm fucking you up.. don't trip girl. it's how i am
when's the last song an artist made you shake your head and close your eyes because of simply being so good that it pierced you through and through?? on EVERY song?!?!!
@lifestraight Sad, but so beautiful at the same time. That last minute is probably the most evocative moment in music that I have ever heard. It hits me right in the chest.
The saddest 2:24 in music history. I just recently "discovered" Marvin. I always knew who he was, what with Grapevine and Let's Get It On, etc. but I never knew the depth of this great man. God definitely made him special and put him here to spread his mesage of love and brotherhood. Now he's leading the choir in heaven, I've no doubt.
this is really haunting and beautiful. the outtro touches you real deep in your gut, especially when he starts riffing on the melody. "take me away, take me away..."
I started listening to Marvin after a long hiatus...I've recently been rediscovering artists..does anybody else hear/see D'angleo when they listen to Marvin?
damn it feel like marvin is telling my life story. my mission in life is to make a change and i am willing to fight the men who are making slaves out of the poor people on earth. some people say i am stupid for doing this but i feel like ill go crazy if i dont do it. if im killed because of it i want the world to know i did the best i could and will the world understand what i was doing and continue to fight?
@008fox When Marvin sings the lines "I did the best I could,... Nobody understood." It literally wrenches me with pain. My father (now deceased) would say that alot when dealing with life's frustrations. Those lines always hit me hard on this song.
I had to come back fro some healing. I can't stress how amazing thhe last 52 seconds of this song are...possibly my favorite minute in the history of music. And it's only right that it's provided by Marvin.
This might be my favourite Marvin, maybe. Its tough choosing favourites from great artists because all they're songs are great. either way I love this song
1st time heard this version! severly deep, in his thinking ability. He drastically changed his musical and vocal style, such as Stevie, even the Beatles got a little deep. Marvin was at his top and yes you can see that his pain, was evident..yet no one covered their pain and made it listenable, without the person getting depressed, like he did. Marry Blidge tried it, obviously following Marvin's style. Alot of her music, was from his. His pain, was for our strength.
Did the man put his heart & pains in his music or what?!?! Wow! I truly feel blessed just listen to Marvin Gaye's music, Nothing like it second to none! R.I.P. Brotha!
Marvin was using his own personal shortcomings to extend the reach of his fellow man. This song has an air of righteousness embedded in the synergy of the piano, bass, and Marvin's angelic vocalizations. Makes you wanna be a better person and try and help those who stumble along the way. Thanks Marvin....
+1 Just my personal opion of course...The reason why never want the song to end is because its almost like you can feel marvin in the room in your soul when you hear the song..and when the song does end you realize...yes it was his father that killed him..but the demon he was fighting aggravated the murder of our beloved marvin. And all we have is his plea for peace.Rip always Rip
You're right about the length. When it finally goes off I'm going "nooooooo! Keep telling me about the people that don't understand!" That's when I immediately play it over again and again.
@E1985Man Yeah thats what I do ; ) Just listened to this again and it has made the hairs on my head are stand up. It does exactly what 'soul music' says on the tin.
We need a modern day Marvin Gaye to set us alight again.
one question. can anyone tell me if this particular version ever came out on vinyl? I know it came out on CD. I have the other Flying High in the Frieddnly Skies on vinyl, but I need this one
O my goodness thank you for posting this. everybody who ever had it posted always had to remove it for some reason i listened to this song everyday and couldnt find it for a long time on here Thank you simply magnificent, i feel his pain and agony!
I NEED ANOTHER SHOT...

Who would have thought that something so dark could come from such a gifted man?
Had to listen to it a few times before I said "Damn, Marvin done went in the dungeon on this one".
It a beautiful song on the surface but his pain resonates throughout and by the
end of it you almost want to cry as he begs to be released from his tormented life.
Don't ever think I have been more sadder than the 2:24 I spent listening to this song.
R.I.P. Marvin, you are truly missed.
