At the moment we haven't been told which school we will be teaching in. Its a 6 week "intensive" English course with Fulbright ETAs, but the organizer is in Burma now. So we haven't got all the info yet. Cant wait though, very exited. Thanks for the reply though, much appreciated.
There are many schools in the refugee camps established by different church organisations adn NGOs. Historically, Baptist church probably are the most active in the ministry. Fullbright most likely has their own English language school there. You will probably be in one the their schools.
2 years ago when I visited Umphium Refugee Camp, I was told there was an English language school there which taught American English. Students are expected to speak English and no others when they are in the school. End result: The students speak very good English language. One of our school principals sent her daughter there to learn English. So, she read with American accent.
Hi, did you work in Mae La then? Im going there in June to teach English for a few months. I was just wondering how it was for you? The kids look like they're having fun.
Karen children are generally very easy to handle. They are so obedient compared to children in the cities. They can sit there listening attentively to you without understanding. So, as a teacher, you need to make sure they understand. One obstacle, in particularly to younger children up to grade 6, is they can't understand English very well, even though they are taught. I suspect it is a result of lack of exposure. It depends on the school you are in.
One more thing is if they children were taught English by the local teacher, their pronouciation is often inaccurate. I discovered it is because the teachers themselves often pronouce inaccurately.
I miss my county
