  • THIS IS JUST SO EPIC

  • EJ ROCKS

  • I can't even explain what I just saw. Un-flipping-believable!!!!!

  • Honestly, witnessing such a performance is worth any ticket price. ANY.

  • Man! this song takes me back to my teenage years. What a master performer! 3 drummers driving this band! What a wall of sound.

  • nigel fucks up at 4:57

  • fucking master piece

  • 1st time i ever heard this was 1975 and i was a college freshman.i was pretty poor and was being introduced to a lot of new things quickly.a friend of mine took me to meet a friend of his in another dorm.that guy wasnt poorand had a cool sansuai stereo system in his room.he put GYBR on and this is what i heard.i was an EJ fan instantly and i still am.must have heard this song a thousand times by now,but it still fires me up.

  • The first time I heard this song it was by Dream Theater (one of my favoriteband) and I had never heard the original version. I loved DT's version of it, which I think is a great version of it - not only cause it's Dream Theater, but because it is a great version. But this is so effin AMAZING!!! Elton John is really a God when it comes to writing songs!

  • I really can't comprehend that kind of talent...voice, piano, composition, truly unbelievable!

  • best song of all times

  • I See it's AIDS World Awareness Day today! This song is Perfect for this day-AIDS Is by far the most Horrid Disease to hit our planet! and It's NOT Over~We spent hundreds of hours helping out in Hollywood here, Along with Any Celeb .Star you can think of, however, Liz Taylor said it best @The Washington Rally for help here" There wouldn't Be A God Damn Hollywood without Gay People so HELP US" God Bless her and all who suffer the losses today, (I worked for 10 years to help-I do my part still!

  • Elton John or James Earl Jones? You decide.

  • I've seen this concert on dvd, it's amazing! elton i love you!!! thanks for your talent!

  • Dr. Octopus sure knows how to play the piano!

  • 9 minute long live concert performance of this song, my fave by him. Actually this live version is shorter than the album one. When I was a radio DJ I used to put this on at the start of my shows, it gave me 11 minutes to go to the bathroom, get coffee & get my records in order to start my day. :-)

  • So glad to see Nigel and Davey there but it is just not the same without Dee..........RIP friend!

  • When did Elton join Mannheim Steamroller...?

  • 4:46 is amazing elton responds - he knows it is fantastic

  • @coolarrow737 If someone promised me I would be as musically talented as Sir Elton and would make his GAZILLION dollars?.....................I would turn gay tomorrow!-----------just sayin.

  • i love this title! it's great!!! thanks Elton i love you

  • I wonder how many people realize that in order to pull this off, maestro Elton needed two complete drum kits (one of which being his from-day-one drummer Nigel....one of the best in the world) PLUS a complete purcussion set. And even after all of that, his piano work still drowned them out!!!!!!

EJ. The only living piano legend of my generation! Some are good....some even close...none better!

    peace

  • @technocrash09 And Let's not forget a Full Orchestra with a few dozen instruments, Lighting and Tech crew, special effects, a FULL Choir with Vocalist , and the Fact that NOW this is the Song for World Aids Day 2011 Today this song is perfect (see my comments below about that- We sure agree that ELTON is a Legend Forever! ♥D

  • The woman at 8:26 looks exactly like Michael Scotts girlfriend Jan in The Office.

  • @dmarie0791 has big shoulders, and little titties.

  • @EvaBongoria actually, you got that the other way around. Intelligent comment, though.

  • @dmarie0791 < me

  • epic song, epic dude. Thank u for all u have done 4 my life.

  • absolutely killer tune!

  • EJ is clearly enjoying himself performing at this concert.

  • I hit dislike but I was talking about his haircut. No sir, don't like it one bit.

  • he's like Elvis

  • i want u to shoot the guy that plays this at my funeral,i kid, give him a drink

  • i wamt this song 2 be put wen i die

    turn it up

  • WHO THE F is hitting dislike! Must have been an accident...

  • Comment removed

  • I play it every time someone I love dies!

  • Undoubtedly one of the very best musical buildups of any popular songs in history. The buildup is killer and once it gets there, it stays there until the end of the song!

  • When I was in early teens, identified with this song. Early 50's now and it's still the same story. Love lies bleeding all over the place.

  • There are singers. There are musicians. There are composers. He is all. Plus a pure genius. Timeless music. Amazing stuff.

  • Como lo dijera Billy Joel en Rolling Stone ... "Este tipo le patea el trasero a cualquiera delante de un teclado".

  • what a song! we dont see that often in the radio, wish singers these days would be more creative from their heart than money lol

  • Davey Johnstone is the MAN!!

  • Posted today in honor of my parents Dick and Pat who I lost 10years ago today, Rest In Peace. Richard is in the Saint Louis Soccer Hall of Fame, he was a fantastic player/coach/ he was my father and my friend ~ and I miss him dearly...

  • 5:04 John Lennon?

  • @Tuloisboss he looks Brian May too

  • 7 people think justin bieber is better than this. Fools.

  • ..and thats how ya spell CL A S S I C R O C K

  • there is cold.....emotions at the stars!!!!!!! wonderful, amazing!

  • why arent the crowd moving?

  • I speak four languages and none of them have a word that can describe this performance. He destroys at epic levels.

  • The bass player is absolutely phenomenal. WOW is all I have to say.

  • Sheer brilliant composition... brilliantly performed by some of the best in the biz. Elton, you are the reason I am a musician today. God's blessings to you.

  • PS: Davey Johnstone ROCKS!!!

  • song is nice brings back memories. But then reality set in,and I awoke frowm the sleeping slumber most minds are in. Please enjoy destroying your souls..You Love It Dont Ya?

  • Klasse Song

  • E's intense/extreme heartwarming affinity for the entire audience en masse ~ is quite glorious.... he 'make's eye contract' plays FOR and produces powerful positive energetic response

  • nigel ollsson one of the most underated drummers of all time. this is my favorite by far next to "60 Years On"

  • Esta mas verga con Dream Theater XD

  • YOU DON'T GET IT .Go back and listen to the bass player he's making almost everything happen. His feel makes the preformance. He's the most underrated musican in the world. His touch his taste, when where and what,he chooses to play impact every part of the song.

  • Reverse psychology work on you too... Go figure :)

  • Amazing performance.

  • My favorite Elton John song--but I've always imagined a big, ostentatious dance and light show number, during the "Funeral for a Friend" part. I wish Cirque Du Soleil would do an Elton John show. He has many great songs that would work awesomely for them.

  • Always loved the guitar riff at 4:54.... fits so well...

    Killer song!

  • Excellent job with this video!

  • @mhumbyrd Excellent job??? THE DAMN END IS MISSING!

  • Elton John is my favorite and i also love his band Davey Johnstone is so awesome and this is all coming from a sixteen year old guy, but does anybody know who the other guitar player is?

  • @MrScottypippin the other guitarist is John Jorgenson of the Hellecasters and the Desert Rose band fame.

  • THANK YOU for uploading with decent quality... =3 love this show =D

  • he better start iwht that in Brisbane Australia this year....

My fav song by him and i would give anything to see that song first

  • LOL i would have LOVED if he pointed at me! haha that would just have been so awsome

  • Whoever says that Elton John can't rock needs to watch this video

  • @altstu2 Rock what? his mom?

  • Thumbs up if you have the DVD. '-'

  • Name me a better way to open an Elton John concert. I can't think of one either.

  • A MASTERPIECE

  • @jbbc77 - Absolutely...

  • @ZenDriveSeven

Yes quite possibly. An incredible musician who can play pretty much every guitar type instrument in any number of styles

  • Damn....

  • Thank you for posting this. The cell phone version of this had all kind of clicks and pops. This is a way better version.

  • Davey Johnstone! Perhaps THE most underated guitar player of all time?

  • omg, I was there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • omg, I was there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love it!!!

  • 8 dislikes really~ 8 people are idiots~

  • 8 dislikes really~

  • 8 dislikes really~

  • Just saw him tonight in our little dinky town - what an honor! He opened with this for us as well. Absolutely one of my most favorite classical pieces ever. Thank you for posting this.

  • @ThePaganShow I just saw him in my Po-dunk town of Louisville, one of the best nights of my life. Amazing doesn't do him justice.

  • @ThePaganShow Springfield, Mo? I saw him as well. Absolutely stunning performance from start to finish.

  • When I saw him in Pensacola Fl. I didn't think i would get to hear this song, but this is what he opened with, AWESOME TALENT AND CONCERT, would see him again that's for sure. Thank you to Kim for an awesome birthday present!

  • How come there are 8 dislikes. These people are most likely rap fans or hip hop fanatics where there isn't one solid once of music talent!! This song will go down in history as the pinnacle of all music. Elton John, we hope you live forever!!!

  • I love how disappointed some of the crowd looks when the song is getting more intense. Well screw them for expecting the whole concert to be all fru-fru!

  • What a TREASURE this video is!!! Thank you for this upload!! :))

  • why can't today's so-called artists compose, play, and sing their own music?

  • Davey Johnstone & John Jorgenson are one of the greatest guitar duos in any rock band ever! Right up there with John & George, Keith & Mick Taylor (and Ronnie Wood), Eric Clapton & Duane Allman, and any others you want to mention. They are skilled, unselfish & joyful in all they play. No egos, just great musicianship. Both are stellar human beings as well which makes their music sound even better!

  • Bernie Taupin is the greatest lyricist of all time, and gets no credit . If it weren't for Bernie, there would be no Elton John!

  • @LennonsApple and if it weren't for Elton, there would be no Bernie

  • Quite possibly the BEST rock song EVER!!!

The digitally remastered studio version, on a high end soundsystem = EARGASM!!!

  • wow.. I'm speechless,,Elton Rocks! Fantabulous!!!! I always loved these two songs..

  • wow.. I'm speechless,,Elton Rocks! Fantabulous!!!!

  • Spectacular song, performed by some world class musicians. This has always been one of my favorites.

The eerie organ instrumental lead in, to set the tone for the song, has me actually hearing and feeling the breeze, The changes in tempo and cadance are very cool.

Bernie Taupin & Elton John are freaking musical geniuses (geneii?)

Two drummers AND a percussion guy.... Damn!

  • @FTroop37F

Bernie is a lyricist and poet, not one of the musicians,in case you haven't heard (after 4 decades).

  • @watayapupuya

I had heard Sparky, the day this song came out..but thanks.

I realize that Mr. Taupin wrote this song. I included Bernie as the songwriter in my comment when refering to the genious of these "musicians".

Stevie Wonder plays keyboard and sings, but I think of him primarily as a writer when I refer to his being a musical genious as well.

If the composer isn't a musician in your opinion... What would he/she be then?

You've had 4 cedades to think about it.

  • @FTroop37F" What would he be ,then"?

    As I said,Sparky, a lyricist.

What the Hell does the word "cedades" have to do with it?

  • Musician–noun

    1. a person who makes music a profession, especially as a performer of music.

    2. any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music.

  • @watayapupuya Your answer looks very much like the first sentence in the Wiki article. Do you ever have an original thought, or do you just plagiarize? Do you ever go deeper than one sentence to stoke your fragile ego.

You use YouTube to impress others with your intellect?... BWAHAHA...go elsewhere Sport, aim higher. You know what I meant, you just had nothing else :)

He's a singer as well. So, in your very narrow definition, only those who play musical instruments are “musician”?

  • @FTroop37F No,you ignorant moron.I did not get it from wiki or anywhere else. Some people don't need to look up such basic elementary things, in order to impress.....blah blahTalk about a fragile ego!

  • @watayapupuya You echo back everything I say to you, twice now :)

You answered my question about your lack of original though. It was rhetorical though, tt needed no answer, but you can't help yourself and you took the bait Gilligan:)

You didn't answer my direct question, but thanks for playing.

You're just way too easy. I poke you and you jump. You just can't help responding to being manipulated. Some people fish, some hunt... I have you :)

  • @FTroop37F Nigel Olsson is all he needed really... the rest are just for fun. ; )

  • @FTroop37F drums are percussion

  • @Syzygy60 Yeah I know, I think you just misunderstood what I meant. All three are percussionists but two exclusively play drum kits while the guy who's standing and tapping, hitting or banging on triangles, chimes, a tambourine, cow bells, symbols, drums...etc.,

I'm not referring to him as a "drummer"... Although he clearly plays drums as well.

So... 3 percussionists, = 2 drummers and "a percussion guy". Is there a proper name for that guy that I'm missing?

    Great music huh?

  • @FTroop37F yes

  • @Syzygy60 My original comment, the one you're referring to, was to express my awe at the sheer number of sticks on a single stage and the wide variety of things to bang on.

@ 8:51 you get an aerial shot of the back half of the stage with a staggering number of things that can be struck in order to make sound.

  • @Syzygy60 Another thing that just trips me out about this is that Elton is performing with such a high level of energy, feeling and commitment. He sounds the same as he did when I first heard this song, in 1973.

  • Davey Johnstone is awesome and Eltons right hand man. Amazing to see him still with EJ.

  • Comment removed

  • LOL everybody is rocking out while playing but the 2nd drummer (2nd?) at 8:20 is super focused

  • Everyone in the entire world dislikes the 8 people who dislikes this!

  • i saw him way back in the late 90's and i can still remember it as one of the best ive seen

  • Anybody else think the guitarist at 2:07 looks like Andy Dick with a blonde wig?

  • Frickin' Great Rock Song......saw EJ in Lexington, Ky. late 70's....one of the best concerts I've ever been to, and paid less than 50 bucks for the ticket too!

  • Why are both Curt Bisquera and Nigel drumming in the band? Never saw Elton with two drumset players before.

  • Captain Fantastic! Whats up with the Bass Players Mullet! LOL.

  • @InsaneGuitarGenius He's growing it for Elton's next transplant!!!

  • Best Elton John song. I love how the song is similar to Bach and early 1700's classical music. I'd say guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen needs to cover this!

  • @ThomasMetal75

Edgar Cruz, a fingerstyle guitarist from Oklahoma City, performs an amazing cover of this song.

  • Holy fuck WOW!! 3, count 'em 3 drummers! Epic! Classis! Unique! Kick ass rock and roll and showmanship! Name one of today's bands who could even come close to this and I'll eat my shorts. Excellent post. Thanks!

  • Put it on, didn't move for the duration. That's truly a great rendition, epic song.

  • More than a 75:1 like to dislike ratio... How 'bout that?

  • i love the fact that dream theater has covered this song in one of thier albums

  • who can dislike this song!!!???

  • which gibson les paul does Dave use in this video?

  • Has to be one of the all time great opening songs for a concert. Hoping to see it in about three weeks in Eugene.

  • This track is different league to anything else he did imho. Rates in the top 10 ever rock tunes along with Suppers Ready, Stairway etc. Half the audience in their smart casual obviously haven't heard the song before.

  • @mouldsworthblade Well said. It's a beast of a song. I like it just as much as I do 2112 and the other two epics you mentioned.

  • f***** awesome, first track on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, loved it the first time I heard it and it's never died on me. Superb performance here and got tickets for Leipzig in June. I just wish he could write more today like his older stuff

  • POWERFUL EMOTIONAL ...RAGING

  • Elton God!

  • Seriously, this is one of his best ever songs - EPIC is the only way to describe it. I would pay just to see this song performed live!

  • @Aircraftfan then don't be late because this is how he opens his concerts. Can you think of a better way? Me either : )

  • This is fantastic live. I've seen him twice and would go again.

  • you just cant stop bouncing your head xD

  • i think the record "goodbye yellow brick road" is the 70:s "sergeant Peppers"!!!

  • you know what i don't get? that title! i thought this was supposed to be FUNERAL for a friend, but that intro didn't really sound like funeral music.

  • great song, but Elton just can't sing anymore :(

  • hey this faggot makes good muzak!

  • @balerinauzicka What has being gay to do with this?

  • @arneblij elton john is gay.
