And now Boston has banned ecigs in public indoor places.... this is BS! I love this show bc they stand up for what is right and consitutional even if they don't like it personally. I smoke, and I prefer to smoke outside my house, even when it is cold outside. I don't mind not smoking at a restaurant table, espescially when there are non smokers around. But, when I go to a bar to drink, I feel I should at least have an option. I should at least have some place to go, have drinks and smokes, and relax.
lets see... its illegal to slap people in the face constantly... why? because it may not kill you but it BOTHER PEOPLE. if I got smoke in my air... i have to taste the smoke, I have it ruining my clothes... and making me smell bad... why does it would be OK? Its ok if you want to smoke. it is bad if you are going to damage me in any way in the proses.. im not talking about cancer, im talking about, smell, taste, and even headache. I'm pro banning of smoking on closed doors public areas.
@herian4 well of course, but then that means that if I don't like the way some perfume smells it should be banned too, or if I don't like how some people's food look in lunch hour, it should be banned too, banning something health aside, just because you don't like how it looks, smells or tastes is pretty selfish I might say, but of course as you might imagine i smoke... not everywhere though cause I know it MIGHT be rude, when someone is eating or something, but really? in a bar?
@MrKaozKaoz that is a straw man, "banning something healt aside is selfish" if i enter a restaurant playing drums and screaming DEATH TO THOSE WHO OPPOSE THE HORDE! I will end in jail. because we have agreed that they are some behaviors that bother other people , plus the smoke of cigars may cause headache, the smells stays on the clothes and hair .and if you are in a high crowded place you will feel suffocated easily its not cancer but bother people and is unhealthy.
@herian4 you talk about hypothetical situations, if you don't like smoke to the level that it gives you headaches and makes you feel sick, you don't go to crowded badly ventilated bars, and I know for a fact that most bars now e well placed smoking areas (which is a little annoying for smokers but is fair for both sides) i understand your point perfectly, but you are still going for the "it bothers me" point, and it is still selfish.
@MrKaozKaoz should I be allowed to slap people then? if there is a legislation against it... it is selfish? of course it bother me! it is wrong? I'm not "morally judging the smokers" I'm not telling "i don't want to see them smoke" i just don't want THEIR smoke on my clothes, eyes and nose, if when I eat ice cream I throw ice cream at random directions and ruin the clothes of other people... they are selfish if they ask me to leave?
@herian4 well to be honest slapping people and complaining is something completely different, cause if you slap someone he might slap you back, and that is not just selfish but it is childish, I certainly don't mean to create an argument here, or a "fight" I only think that if you only think for what you want, like and care for yourself then yes you are being selfish.
@MrKaozKaoz Well what if I eat ice cream and in the process i throw it to random directions, ruining other people clothes, hair, and food.. if someone tell me to leave... he is being selfish? if he tell me "go eat that outside" he is being selfish? a reaction against being physical harmed or injured or against a physical negative effect is not selfishness is defense. and smoke is not "spiritual" is physical.

@MrKaozKaoz we can both agree that is a long discussion to address each point on youtube. as a citizen of a province that as banned smoking on public areas, bars and pubs, I can assure you being in a crowded area is much more enjoyable now, even for the smokers. we in the past have the "smokers/non smokers areas" law, but the areas thing never worked well for the owners of the bars. now the owners are happy, smokers are happy, and non smokers are happy.

"I dont care that you smoke five packs a day in your car" around 3:55 really 5 packs a day? damn someone does have a problem. I can understand one or two packs but lets play with some numbers real quick: 5 packs X 20 cigs/pack = 100 cigs/day really now who does that? i've heard of a pack a day. I've heard of two packs a day. I even know a couple people who can do three. but 5 really? sounds a bit naive about what he is talking about... maybe idk what i'm talking about though
@d9Prem If you slept 8 hours a day you would have to light up a cigarette about every 9 minutes and 36 seconds every waking hour to smoke 5 packs a day!
Thank you people who are considerate and step aside to light up, we appreciate it. Secondly anti-smoking regulations pass because it makes the government look tough on things that can kill you, which connects to anti-drug regulation. Honestly though, there is a difference between secondhand smoke and sitting next to someone who thinks there are spiders under their skin. Which I will refer to as second hand trippin'.
The dude at 4:16 was probably joking about outlawing cake, but after NYC banned transfats and SF outlawed Happy Meals, it's sadly not an absurd joke any more.
I think he had a solid argument, but the guy he interviewed really took a bit of a beating in the final cut. You've proven that he's wrong, however there really isn't a need to Photoshop a superhero costume onto him based on some assumption.
I'm not saying that banning smoking should be banned, but by forcing people to "suck it up" to cigarrette smoke is unfair to the people who honestlycan not handle it. What is wrong with simply taking it outside. It's true, non-smokers are not the center of the attention, but guess what, NEITHER ARE SMOKERS!
@Swingarthur I think you're also missing the point. The point is that if you go to an establishment that allows smoking, then you either deal with it or you leave.
@DeadFishFactory But your making the assumption that there are other choices for non-smokers. Most places where smoking is allowed, its allowed inside EVERYWHERE otherwise its discrimination against smokers blahblablah bullshit.
Its my right to pour paint all over my clothes. But if I go into a restaurant and throw paint at your clothes are you really just gonna sit there and take it? Same thing. Smoke wrecks my clothes.
@Swingarthur If you enter a restaurant where throwing paint at random is okay, and you see people throwing paint around at random before you sit down, why are you surprised that you would get paint on yourself?
Some establishments offer smoking and non-smoking sections. Most outright ban smoking in their business. Some--very few--allow smoking in their establishments (bars and clubs, for example). You are always free to go elsewhere.
@Swingarthur I used to eat at this restaurant quite often because it was close to work a couple years back. One day they started to allow smoking inside their restaurants. Did I bitch and moan? No. Did I protest them with signs or tell all the smokers to get out? No. I just stopped going there. You can do the same.
@DeadFishFactory Sure I can. But unlike yourself, I'd prefer to look at the big picture. The overall health of people/business.
I'm not trying to ban smoking. People should be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want. But that right doesn't extend to intruding into other people's space and life. Just smoke outside. Not a big deal.
Anyway not gonna continue here. In sydney we've banned it everywhere inside. Business improved, I don't have to stink, and peoples health is improving. Good times
@Swingarthur Do you often cuss like that in public? Because that's offensive too. So, I guess we need some anti-cussing legislation to go along with the anti-smoking legislation.
IF iu wanna smoke outside while that idiot says something to saying put that out thats harmful to my health i would flip him or her off and than continue smoking...smoking dont cause cancer theres NO facts no solid hard proof facts REAL facts. enough said. so FUCK ypou none smokers whos make false claims to get your way..what cowards.
now i dont smoke, ive tried it, hated it, but why is smoking blamed for all lung cancer death, but butter isnt blamed for coronary disease? you can blame whatever you want, but people are gonna do what they want, its why they live in america, freedom to ruin your body however you damn well please!
Its not BS. Dont put shit in your lungs that isnt supposed to be there. Im alergic to cigarette smoke and I cant go into some areas because theres smokers there. Hell the college I go to allows smoking and its bullshit! I am probably going to write a petition to not allow smoking on campus.
Is it me or one of the most common words used in the statements in this video is COULD? Everything is could. That's right - it COULD happen,it CAN affect. That's the magic word.It all for those who are fanatic about these "studies" - last time I checked, COULD or CAN is not IS!
"... people who don't want to breath that crap ..."
I agree with this statement if you replace "breath" with "smell". The ONLY part of this smoking ban that makes sense is that you don't need scientific evidence to know that MANY people hate the smell of cigarette smoke, and when a smoker walks in it can ruin their dining experience, even if there are sections. If the ban is based on this crap document, then the whole thing is crap though. But it IS smoking up the air, regardless of health.
@bluejays1152 Mythbusters did an experiment with plants and music, trying to determine whether or not music aftects growth. Turns out the death metal plants grew the healthiest.
Non-smokers should do what I do when around smoking people, "FUCKING MOVE" instead of making someone move, just make an effort and move and prevent any kind of arguement and problems. Simple.
Im an asthmatic and people can smoke if they want to, but the last thing I want when I'm waiting for a bus is to come dangerously close to an asthma attack because someone can't be arsed to go and smoke somewhere else.
@rockyrac Because I shouldn't have to and also it's illegal to smoke at bus stops anyway. But the crappy government put a tiny little sign in the top left corner of the bus shelter saying "It is illegal to smoke in this area"
babies need a balance between nature and nurture... fuck this mozart shit. my brother and i tested pretty f**king high on IQ tests as teens, yet i was still a handful and grew up with attention deficit, my brother with epilepsy. didn't listen to classical, didn't get uterus playback in our collective ear, and yet we completed higher education. huh.
According to government websites The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. National Toxicology Program, the U.S. Surgeon General, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer all classify second-hand smoke as a carcinogen.
I don't smoke, but I'm not going to stop people from smoking just because I have a problem with it. Yes, smoking is harmful; yes, smoking will kill you, but it's everyone's right to put whatever the fuck they want into their own bodies.
@TheFingerbuns If you own a business, and someone walks in while smoking, go ahead and kick then out. However, if you go into a restaurant or a business that allows smoking, don't expect everyone to leave to make you comfortable.
Out in public, unless there is a "no smoking" sign or an area where smoking is allowed, you either deal with it or you leave.
You know what I'm going to, I'm going to go to restaurants and start spraying gross smelling chemicals into people's faces. After all, that's my right, isn't it?
I think smoking should be looked at the same way free speech is.When someone has a point of view i don't want to hear they are polluting the air around me.Can I ask them to leave or tell them to shut up?
well that is bullshit, now people must be free to sticky smelly unhealthy disposals without even caring who may be polluting to. Now what about the freedom of breathing smoke-free air?
I honestly think that the smoking ban has been introduced in order to cause an unbelievable amount of inconvenience to smokers going out to bars, et cetera, to hopefully push them towards thinking of quitting as more and more inviting, because the government is always saying "quit", I don't know why they would want people to quit- they make money from smoking- but they're obviously not trying to stop "second hand smoke"
Not only that, but the only reason behind the smoke break is because of people who are complete children and are against people smoking while they work.
if you don't like the smoke then i don't like your air, the air you exhale is just annoying for me and i will protest to make sure there's a legislation that would be pass preventing you from breathing
Breathing in carbon monoxide is dangerous to your health. Suppose you're stuck in traffic on your way to work one day, and all of a sudden 50 obnoxious loudmouths on bicycles ride up to your car and start screaming about how your daily commute to work is killing them. The next thing you know congress is legislating that you're only allowed to use your vehicle in a limited capacity for so many hours a day. And you now have to ride a fucking bicycle to work under penalty of law. Far fetched? No.
@AngusRocker22 The problem with this argument is that an outright ban of smoking would have a latent function of the production of a black market for cigarettes. The high number of already addicted smokers would be forced to seek out cigarettes and tobacco products in an unregulated market and would become criminals. It would create a 'war on cigarettes' campaign that would likely cost more in resources than the entire 'war on drugs campaign' already instated.
@AngusRocker22 Eating big macs should be banned as well. They're bad for you, and they make you fat. I don't like looking at fat people, so I think the government should bad them.
I don't agree with them on the secondhand smoke. Breathing burning tar is not good for you, I don't care how you spin it and its not just about caner. Many organs like heart and kidneys suffer too. A behavior should be banned when other people are being subject to its effects involuntarily- it is perfectly constitutional to legislate.
@grandmasterreggae we disallow serving spoiled food, bad alcohol, public nudity, violence, etc. all these are behaviors made illegal by the government because they render undue harm to other individuals without their consent. I think people should be free to do nearly anything as long as it doesn't effect well being of others. laws seem to agree with that. now, since new studies have been released which state that secondhand smoke can cause cancer, its really a nobrainer.
@RaggedM88 And even if we're at a point where we're unsure if it really harms us or not.. shouldn't we err on the side of caution? We used to think smoking cured tuberculosis. I love this show, but they're a little too liberal on this one.
I like to smoke when I drink. Generally, I only smoke when I drink. I like having this ability. I like cigars (cheap ones). Sometimes cigarettes. I believe a nice smoke after a good meal with a good conversation to boot is one of the best things in life for under $100.
By taking away my ability to share this with a friend, you are nailing people who can't afford our own private chefs to serve us our fillet Mignon on our terraces as we smoke pipes.
Even if it doesn't cause cancer it's still a bitch to have to breathe in if people are smoking around you. I don't think it should be banned from bars or restaurants, but it should be from work places.
Ban it in the bistro and allow it in the bar. Problem solves, kids can't go in the bar and really if you hate smoking so much imagine what alcohol is doing to you. I don't smoke and never had, there should be someplace where people cannot smoke especially indoors but also allow alot of areas were smoking can be done.
"[A] lot of episodes they just expound their opinions as loudly as possible while occasionally calling on an actual expert [...]. The most notable case was their episode on secondhand smoke - when it was discovered that they used data compiled by Steve Milloy (an "expert" with significant ties to Big Tobacco), the skeptic community (who are very hostile to Milloy) heavily criticized the duo, forcing them to apologize." Can't post the source since YouTube are dickbags.
While these people may be full of shit with regards to their data and studies, I have trouble imagining that second hand smoke really isn't that harmful. When I visited my gf's family, who are all heavy indoor smokers, I got sick within a day because of the environment I was in and stayed sick for almost a week after leaving.
A buddy of min Drives a truck. He owns his truck. He was going to LA. He gets pulled over by a CHP and he had a smoke hanging out of his mouth the cop gave him a ticket for smoking in the work place.
Penn and Teller belong to the Cato Institute which is funded by Phillip Morris and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. They are magicians, THEIR JOB IS TO DECEIVE YOU! Look at the studies yourself. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2515267/
@Lordbaldur Okay, cool. That was my assessment as well. I think few would have the balls to go that far though for some reason. Hey, a store doesn't have to let whites etc. into their store, right?
That's right. The government shouldn't coerce you with the threat of imprisonment or fines into letting people you dislike onto your property, or force you to engage in trade with them, regardless of who you hate. It shouldn't matter why you don't want to trade with someone, only that you don't. If you don't want to sell something that belongs to you to a certain person, for whatever reason, why should the government force you? Can it even be called trade when you're forced into it?
I'm fine with smokers and their habit, they better be fine with my habit of pissing on them while they eat, I know it's a dirty habit but I'm trying to quit !
look i don't like second hand smoke, id prefer a smoke free environment, but if someone is smoking near me, i did an amazing thing, i got up and stood on my feet, and fucked off to an area without smoke. amazing right
@schwazer210 Couldn't smokers go somewhere else where they're not going to bother anybody else? I mean, I'm not going to whip out my johnny and start rubbing it at a bus station because I feel like it. One's freedom stops where elses freedom starts. People don't always want to see my dick...
@schwazer210 Excellent strategy. Wanna hear something else amazing? I'm a smoker. And if I'm in a crowd of people, I'm considerate enough to step away before I light up. Amazing how most of us can respect each other without legal mandates.
@schwazer210 I think it is helpful to paraphrase Regan here. Your rights to swing your fist ends where my nose begins. In other words your right to smoke ends where my nose begins. It is actually basic philosophy of rights. You do not have the right to dump poison in a river that flows to other peoples property.
What about burping and farting in public? I don't think they are harmful but they are offensive yet people make a big deal out of these natural bodily functions.
Why would smoking be horrible for the people who do it, but have no negative effect on people around the smoker? I still don't understand that. They never fully explained that.
Banning smoking inside isn't a big deal in the states, but what about up here in Canada? 6 months of the year smokers are at risk for hypothermia when they're forced outside
I am not too familiar with this subject, but does the fact that people with asthma/lung problems hold any weight in these arguments? I am not a smoker but would not take anyone's rights away because I simply don't like the smell. One would think these tobacco enthusiasts would also see it for the pot smokers point of view and let the pot enthusiasts smoke a joint in public if they pleased.
Hmm, Penn said that they never take the interviewees out of context. I don't agree with the anti-smoking guy but the bit that starts at 4:50 is clearly out of context. Anyway P&T I might not always agree, but you guys rule. As an ex-smoker, I quite like second hand smoke btw.
I love Bullshit, but you can wave your fist all you want until it hits my nose. I shouldn't be subjected to the...icky-ness of smoke when I'm trying to have dinner.
@phloatingpheasant nahh u shouldnt be allowed to smoke in restraunts, its nasty and ruins the taste of the food, as a smoker i know this and dont smoke 10minutes before any meal. smoking should be allowed in bars and pubs and theres a great deal of evidence that it fucks up the culture, look at ireland-pub culture fucked
@phloatingpheasant smoking/nonsmoking sections that are physically divided should be good enough. I"m for keeping smoking away from me. Fucks with my sinuses.
what the fuck the baby on 8:33 looks scared as shit he is like get this fucking wack job finger out of my fucking mouth and look at that crazy fuck he is too happy while doing it everyone hide your kids!!!!!!!
@nonh1 total infringement on your rights, but i guess they think it will cost to much for you to fight it in court...its already illegal to smoke on government or hospital property in your own car here.
As much as I usually agree with the conclusions of Bullshit, they do use the same tactics as their opponents, which I find frustrating.
For example they seem to highlight straw men arguments for some reason. The freedom to eat cake is not the same as freedom to force-feed cake to others. Am I free to insulate my public building with asbestos, too?
They also cherry pick studies. Tobacco industry funded studies = valid. Independent studies on animals = not even mentioned. Smoke is harmless? :/
screw smokers, they complain about their rights, but its about respecting the rights of people who are smart enough not to smoke. The problem is not that they smoke, but that they occupy public places and it drifts through the air. Sure, I respect your choice to smoke, but can I choose for my taxes to NOT go towards paying for you cancer treatments?!?
@rob narrow minded people never show much real use in society. if your worried about toxins in the air then pretty much every modern luxury needs to be destroyed, 1 coal power plant (the most common power plant in use today) produces and releases more toxins in a day than than a large town of about 50,000 smokers would in a year. As for the taxes issue; nobody wants to pay for any ones stupidity such as sports accidents, STDs, drug therapy, ect... but we do. why? because we may need their help.
I like going into restaurants and bars and not having to deal with smoke, but I believe non-smoke or smoke businesses should be the decision of the business not government. If you dislike smoke get the F Out of places that allow smoking.
My mid school made us listen to Mozart before state tests. Really. We still failed miserably.

I think they're missing the main point. For me it's not so much about the health risks.
YOUR SMOKING FUCKING STINKS! TAKE IT OUTSIDE! I DON'T WANT IT ALL OVER MY FUCKING CLOTHES.
Swingarthur 3 months ago
@Swingarthur I think you're also missing the point. The point is that if you go to an establishment that allows smoking, then you either deal with it or you leave.
DeadFishFactory 3 months ago
@DeadFishFactory But your making the assumption that there are other choices for non-smokers. Most places where smoking is allowed, its allowed inside EVERYWHERE otherwise its discrimination against smokers blahblablah bullshit.
Its my right to pour paint all over my clothes. But if I go into a restaurant and throw paint at your clothes are you really just gonna sit there and take it? Same thing. Smoke wrecks my clothes.
Swingarthur 3 months ago
@Swingarthur If you enter a restaurant where throwing paint at random is okay, and you see people throwing paint around at random before you sit down, why are you surprised that you would get paint on yourself?
Some establishments offer smoking and non-smoking sections. Most outright ban smoking in their business. Some--very few--allow smoking in their establishments (bars and clubs, for example). You are always free to go elsewhere.
DeadFishFactory 3 months ago
@Swingarthur I used to eat at this restaurant quite often because it was close to work a couple years back. One day they started to allow smoking inside their restaurants. Did I bitch and moan? No. Did I protest them with signs or tell all the smokers to get out? No. I just stopped going there. You can do the same.
DeadFishFactory 3 months ago
@DeadFishFactory Sure I can. But unlike yourself, I'd prefer to look at the big picture. The overall health of people/business.
I'm not trying to ban smoking. People should be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want. But that right doesn't extend to intruding into other people's space and life. Just smoke outside. Not a big deal.
Anyway not gonna continue here. In sydney we've banned it everywhere inside. Business improved, I don't have to stink, and peoples health is improving. Good times
Swingarthur 3 months ago
@Swingarthur You don't think that the people who work at such a place or go to such a place understand that the place allows smoking?
I know banning smoking improves business, but that decision should be left up to the business owners and not so much the government.
DeadFishFactory 3 months ago
@Swingarthur Do you often cuss like that in public? Because that's offensive too. So, I guess we need some anti-cussing legislation to go along with the anti-smoking legislation.

NickF1227 5 months ago
"... people who don't want to breath that crap ..."

@TheFingerbuns If you own a business, and someone walks in while smoking, go ahead and kick then out. However, if you go into a restaurant or a business that allows smoking, don't expect everyone to leave to make you comfortable.

No.

Smoking should be banned. Period. If no one smoked, no new "smokers" could be produced and no one would give a shit.
AngusRocker22 9 months ago
@AngusRocker22 The problem with this argument is that an outright ban of smoking would have a latent function of the production of a black market for cigarettes. The high number of already addicted smokers would be forced to seek out cigarettes and tobacco products in an unregulated market and would become criminals. It would create a 'war on cigarettes' campaign that would likely cost more in resources than the entire 'war on drugs campaign' already instated.
Recessive1 8 months ago

I don't agree with them on the secondhand smoke. Breathing burning tar is not good for you, I don't care how you spin it and its not just about caner. Many organs like heart and kidneys suffer too. A behavior should be banned when other people are being subject to its effects involuntarily- it is perfectly constitutional to legislate.

grandmasterreggae 9 months ago
@grandmasterreggae we disallow serving spoiled food, bad alcohol, public nudity, violence, etc. all these are behaviors made illegal by the government because they render undue harm to other individuals without their consent. I think people should be free to do nearly anything as long as it doesn't effect well being of others. laws seem to agree with that. now, since new studies have been released which state that secondhand smoke can cause cancer, its really a nobrainer.
