I'm just started painting myself and I've done 3 Bob Ross paintings just so I can see how well i can really be...I have to say the wet on wet technique is very very useful and easy. I also think that you are very good, sure there are things that need alittle fixing here and there but otherwise you are very good.
To KayZahn, Your welcome. Don't stop painting. You have a gift, I think your painting came out great! Your painting with the pallet knife very well, along with the other brushes. I thought the video showed your skills well! Advice, although you don't need any, concentrate on the good comments, the dislike comments are crap and useless. I was surprised on u-tube at first to see some of the negativity, but I guess it's out there. My point, your paintings and great comments R what count!
Someone told me painting materials could be expensive. I disagree. I've run across the art isle and the canvas stands could be a bit high, I could definitely build one cheaper, just keep it sturdy and portable. Canvas can be any size. For beginning painting buy a few good medium paints and mix the colors to get more color variety, and oil, if that's ur preference. I believe BRoss only used a hack brush, liner and fan and knife. Just take care of them :) Truthfully just use a fan & knife.
@aaa567ify Thank you so very much for your encouraging words. I need to start painting again, and it's folks like you that make me realize that it IS a good thing to share. The video taping and editing after painting sort of makes me NOT want to do it, but it IS fun to watch isn't it ;) ? THANKS AGAIN. Kay
First off, I really like your sky. I think BRoss would disagree with a comment I just read about realistic. In art you can create anything you want. It's your world. Your sky is cool, and it looks like you are going to be a master at mountain ranges! I think PBS should hire you if your a continuous painter. You seem fun. Keep painting!!! Thanks for the upload.
That really is lovely. Gray is my favorite color and the whole scene reminds me of Michigan winters where the sky itself seems frozen. Very, very nice work.
Okay... you asked for critics. 1st: brave to show your work! 2nd: I think you need to 'wiggle' the knife more, to get more realistic snow. 3rd: sorry, I've never seen a sky like that... uhmmm, not very realistic. 4rd: I think you should start putting your snow right from the upper edges of the mountains, in order to avoid funny edges of 'rock' in places where one would expect snow. 5nd: first draw the trunk of the tree, and than the rest. Have fun and it's nice watching you! :)
re: 3rd: sorry, I've never seen a sky like that... uhmmm, not very realistic.
Then you've never been to Toledo! I think the gray sky like that actually works really well in this painting. Makes me want to have a cup of hot chocolate and just look at the painting for a while.
Its not a bad work, one think I have to say is: If you copy the way Bob Ross paints, remember, that he evertime works from behind to forward, that means: sky and ground, doesnt matter which either water or something else, than step by step the other things and after every step a little bit more coming to the front, I hope I explain it good. But really after all, for art there never exists bad work! :-) Your pic is very good!
It is not only possible, I did it. I still can't draw much more than a stick figure (though I'm teaching myself that too) and I NEVER painted before I watched Bob Ross (a lot) and after seeing him do it, I had to pick up the brush. These videos are really of some of my first tries. I might have three that I did without video taping myself . Each one got better, but even the first one wasn't bad.
Honestly, is it really possible for someone who has absolutely NO drawing talent or art experience to do BR style painting. I once bought myself a Martin Weber BR kit for around $100 todays money and after a week of sitting there looking at it I returned it 'cause I know I cant even draw a stick figure well. I wish I could think differently.
I used to paint at this "Young at Arts" place for almost 6 years but once I entered high school I kind of got busy and stopped! I'm so sad and your videos really are making me re-consider and start painting again! You make it look so fun and relaxing... I have to buy the supplies, which will be expensive.
What are you painting with?
Would acrylic be the best/ most affordable for painting?
I'm used to oil paints, but that is more expensive right?
@ileese Why are you sad? I'm painting with oil in the videos, but I like playing with pastel (like chalk drawing ;) and watercolor too. Acrylics I've tried but they dry so fast. The Bob Ross method really requires his oil paints. They are formulated for the type of fast 1 hour painting that he does. Heavy dark colors, light weight bright colors and etc. If you really want to paint, I'll send you some supplies. Send me your address (kayzahn at greeraz dot com)
@KayZahn Haha well, it's just that I miss how I used to be able to have so much time to paint and enjoy myself through art. I've been thinking about getting back into this hobby, but couldn't decide what kind of material to work with. I'll need to watch more of your videos too haha. Yeah! I remember how easy it was to blend and rework back and forth with the oil, but it took at least a week to dry!
@ileese Yea if you are painting outside (on location) it's hard to carry home a canvas with wet oil paint.. But I bought a special case (more money than common sense I guess) to carry it home in. Problem is, I don't have time to go out and paint. I'm always going out to photograph and then painting in studio.
@KayZahn You're truly too kind! I couldn't let you send me supplies! but when I do start, I'd be happy to show you what I've done! I have to learn from your videos, I think I've forgotten how to paint haha. I'm actually going to be in the middle of applying to nursing school, but after December, I'll have so much free time I'll need to paint to keep myself productive! Thanks so much you've been amazing Kay! I'll be back and with my own supplies!! haha :))
Very nice! -- Kay: I'm impressed that you decided to do this. It makes me feel lazy, however, as I should be doing this, too! Good luck! (Yes, it *is* a cool effect!)
@Semilove -I'm CRAZY for doing this, but it's fun. I am fairly busy, and I spend a lot of time online, and on the phone. WATCHING Bob Ross helps to "slow down" the atmosphere (which my MIL -MiMi- needs) but I don't sit still to well, so I had to paint, and then video, and edit, and blog, and get online (again) . . . so doing this MAKES me change my pace a few times a month. Yes . . that's it . . thanks for the therapy ;)
@Semilove OH YEA, if you ever DO "do this" or anything that is your "this" please feel free to SHARE. I'm finding that just knowing people are watching is a great motivator. Even if they don't "care" per se if I ever do another one, it makes me FEEL like they are waiting and watching . .
@KayZahn The closest I've gotten to doing this is writing continuing stories on Facebook's FluffBook. They're little kid stories, but I have to admit, they're good. Although I've been slacking lately. . . a computer virus and life in general have interfered, but just for you, I'll go back today and write some more! Not sure how to get you to the correct page, but here's the link they gave me:

Not bad. But making your hair stand on end will make you much more authentic, indifferent to the quality of your painting.
