Hey Ed, a QUEStion if you will... would you say the copper bell tends to attract lightning strikes more frequently than say, a lacquer bell or a silver one? Here in the HighLands one must be concerned about such matters especially in the monsoon season...
Hey, very nice, Ed. Great tone, man. By the way, I think my next horn's going to be the Kanstul ZKF-1525, too. It's getting nothing but outstanding reviews by horn players all over the internet. Question: Does the copper bell seem/feel anymore vulnerable to dings than a typical flugelhorn's? What do you like best about it? Thanks!
The burnished copper bell is nice in that I don't have to polish it like I do on my trumpet. As far as dings go - it seems to be just as vunerable as any other horn. On gigs I use trombone stands rather than a trumpet stand - the trombone stand is more resistant to drunks knocking your horn off the stand.
I mess around with various instruments - piano, trombone, guitar, flute, violin, drums ... whatever is handy but I'm certainly not competent to play them publicly.
Ed, it was a pleasure meeting you today. I had at least two of your videos saved under my favorites. You have a great gift, and it is wonderfull of you to share it with all.
Thanks! I'm just starting to get connected to local musicians here in Columbia SC and have been jamming with a great guitar player by the name of Don Russo. He plays regularly at the Speakeasy jazz club by the University of South Carolina in Columbia. The horn is great so far but I really hate the amato water keys - the main one stopped working and I've got to rotate my horn to get rid of the water - kind of like a french horn player.
I'm using a standard Kanstul stock mouthpiece that came with the horn. I've only tried a couple of mouthpieces for the flugelhorn - Back 3C, 10C and the Kanstul and there doesn't appear to be much of a difference. Certainly not as much as in a trumpet mouthpiece. I definitely don't want a bright sound on the flugel. Unfortunately, I don't live in a place anymore where I can conveniently try out a bunch of flugelhorn mouthpieces before purchasing.
hi! i am a trumpet/flugel player and i am playing this solo in the jazz band i attend! you are a real inspiration and yhave given me loads of ideas that will work for my playing style!!!
Oh this is nice - thank you for sharing on the tube. (Pardon the pun.) Just letting some fellow students know why I like flugel horns (and your instrument is prime, huh?) & players...better post them this (about to go to the one note samba too). Wonderful! You make me glad that I love music.
Hello SirEatsAlot. I used to play in a dance band but got tired of the late hours, drunk people and smoke filled rooms. Nowadays I play mostly in churches and synagogues.
Hi Elliot. Ha ha. Please do steal. Everyone steals ideas ... I guess the key is to steal a little from everyone you like so you end up sounding precisely like nobody else.
This is absolutely amazing! I'm thirteen years old and very musicaly inclined, i ccan pretty much play anything i pick up. i play trumpet in the band. im gonna buy me a flugel. whats a good brand?
Kanstul is good of course. But I've played on the Yamaha Bobby Shew models and those sound great also. You really need to try some out for yourself. Go to a trumpet convention or a good music store and give them a try.
The flugelhorn is a great intstrument to play and difficult. You play it so well, you are very talentd. Great stuff. I only wish I could play mine like you.
that flugelhorn looks and sounds so beautiful and so do you btw, i love ittttt

I think this would sound good with a horn mouthpiece (with a bit). Would add to the mellow sound.
