The Catholic church and any church for that matter has always been a hypocritical corporation based on giving an answer to what fears people most, what happens when you die.
While people will probably read/watch/listen to Letting go of God and think "my Christian friends should watch this"... this really is a show that should be experienced by more of us non-believers who have never really been religious.
Before I watched Julia, I had no idea how big the gap between atheism and religion was, and how much pain can result from trying to get across. She was one heck of an eye-opener.
I suppose Christians, in turn, can read Society Without God, by Phillip Zuckermann.
I think it's a little weird that she bases her search for religion on what kind of book catches her eye in a bookstore. She obviously didn't have a strong base of Christianity, so this is why she's so easily swayed.
I wanted to be a firefighter as a child. That doesn't mean that I truly knew what it took to be a firefighter. Plus, she went to a weird Catholic church if she's being told about evolution. The priest that she talked to when she was trying to re-connect has to be pretty green to not be able to answer her questions.
Another thing about her re-connecting, it had more to do with the ritual or habit of the Catholic church and not her spiritual roots. She didn't have any spiritual root in the Catholic church, because it never became her religion, it was always her parent's religion.
I don't know, in the show she talks about having "religious experiences" in her life, siting times when the holy spirit "shook me to the core." That sounds like someone who really believes to me.
Would I be giving so many details and commenting if I haven't seen the show. The whole show is weird to me. It literally sounds like she based her adventures on what she saw in a bookstore. That's not how religion should be approached.
I'll admit that it's an entirely personal opinion to think that someone would not have seen/heard the performance to not understand her former religiosity. I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I was honestly curious.
Conversely, saying "she based her adventures on what she saw in a book store" is a matter of opinion. One could say she bases her adventures on dying family members or her acting experience.
You do make a valid point. I'm just saying the bookstore thing had a lasting effect on me. She seems to reiterate that point the same if not more than her brother's death. And, I totally understand you questioning if I know what i'm talking about. There are a lot of people that have opinions without research. You're not a jerk and I hope my responses don't come across that way either. With me being a religious I thought her process and the religious people she came across were a little weird.
I don't understand how you can say she didn't have a strong base in Christianity when she went right to th source at a Bible study class and read the whole thing cover to cover? That's the base of Christianity right there, and she covered it all WITH a priest and a class. That takes dedication. Most Catholics don't even do that in their lives. That dedication shows faith to me, it wasn't skepticism. Her skepticism arose after she read the Bible. You can't blame her for that.
She made it very apparent that she doesn't truly know how to interpret the Bible. She then doesn't help matter by surrounding herself with a bunch of idiots when she couldn't conjure up an answer. The trips to the bookstore, the priest that has no real answers to the simplest of questions. Either she is lying or exaggerating about the Q&A with the priest or he is the least qualified person to be in the priesthood.
Can you name one person who has a "100% accurate" interpretation of the bible?
The fact that you CAN interpret it in various ways automatically implies that most people who try to interpret it will do it wrong. Doesn't that worry you a little? How do we know who's right and who's wrong? Whoever agrees with you is right and whoever disagrees is wrong? I think that's cause for great concern right there.
but life feels so good having a relationship w/ God that I do sometimes FEEL like all of the above! haha
I'M SORRY that someone claimed to be 'Christian' & fell short of the name & REPUTATION. I feel people dont really want to know if God exsits, that's not the main issue.BUT rather if he gives a rip/cares! Is he gonna do something about the hell life can be!?
in my experience he does that EVERYDAY in my life. But I cant argue that w/ U cuz it's just my experience.
@SakuraSymphony It's not your experience, it's your belief. There is a difference. We are all controlled by our brains and what goes into them. That is what gives us our vision of reality. Your vision of reality includes a god for which there is no independent evidence. But if it helps you through then it's fine. Just try to keep it to yourself and not spread it to others. It is a kind of infectious disease which can cause major health problems to certain character types.
No, its my EXPERIENCE. And UR right, there is a difference that between the 2. Telling people 2 love God & each other is an infectious desease? yeah, your right LOL , but I KNOW that having a relationship w/ god lifestyle/perspective causes more GOOD than Evil. Religion & self righteousness does damage NOT God Or those who genuinely love people. Im sorry Ppl like this make U sick, and U find it useless. But REAL hurting ppl appreciate ppl like this, though you find it pathetic
@SakuraSymphony Any non believer can do good things without god and many of them do. But it takes real faith to follow your own interpretation of the bible no matter what the consequences. That is the knd of faith that gives rise to Cht=ristian militias throughout the third world as well as many other god fearing warriors who kill in the name of their god. If you really think that believers do more good than harm, you need to look again around the world. You are simply WRONG!
@boc1953 Yeah, I said that ! people who dont belive God exsists do good things LOL

I'm shocked that I'm sort of defending the ture identity of the Catholic Church. I'm not a big fan. They are the ones that created non-Biblical doctrines that are now common place. The church that she attended seems to be even further off from what I know that the Catholic Church stands for. I challenge anybody to show me where the Catholic Church is in support of evolution, like the nun in school told her. Julia puts her case out there like this is a true representation of Christianity.
Well Pope John Paul II said "evolution is more than just a theory." Looks like "evil" science is getting into the Church huh? Damn, why can't we just have Bible study every day? lol
Anyone with any basic knowledge of science supports evolution - religious of not. Many people believe there is a god of some sort, but they don't believe the earth is 6000 years old. You'd have to be a complete idiot to believe that.
Everyone knows the earth is much, much older and that all living things evolve over time. (Evolved, are evolving and will continue to evolve forever.) Some religious people still claim things never change, but by now most people just ignore them.
