why is it that paul carrack always seemed to sing this song live very different from the recording....that always bothered me...the recording is so wicked...just wondering
We are fortunate that we see Paul and his brilliant band at least once a year, we love the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield it is a great gig, Our last gig was just a few weeks ago, Feb 2012 and with Paul`s Support band Tinlin they were magic and Chesterfield was the only place to be, brilliant. They were able to keep this track back until the first encore and house erupted fantastic night
Eric Clapton called himself a journeyman, but the word really does fit Carrack. He went through a lot of phases in his career. I saw him a couple times with Nick Lowe; I knew right away what tracks on "Suburban Voodoo" stuck out and they ended up on "The Carrack Collection" with this one. Should have been a star, but as I'm fond of saying. there was only room for one plain looking Englishman with the initials P.C.
Paul says he wrote this about a guy in the band who was thinking of leaving. Of course it turns out well as a love song. What a singer. Make sure you check him out on Squeeze's Tempted by the fruit of another and Mike & the Mechanics In the Living Years.
This is one of the best songs ever recorded..I loved it as a kid and I love it to this day..I groove to this song everytime I hear it! I'm begging my husband to dust off his guitar and jam out to this song for me!!
My band back these guys up in Baltiomre in the mid 70's. What a great bunch of guys. I actually bought the album the day after we played with them and had them all sign it. Lots of fun.
This song brings back a lot of happy memories for me. I remember being 13 years old and I would always listen to this great song every time it came on the radio. This is a great live performance. Thanks for posting this great classic :)

Who is the lead guitarist on this version? It definitely isn't the original one, Phil Harris, from 1974! Where did he go?

How can the lead singer be from Europe and and have a southern accent?

He doesn't have a southern accent. He has a British accent because he is from the United Kingdom.

The refrain is haunting. Another old pop song that actually hits home with this old hard rocker just because it is so well crafted.
