some good tips. but what if you are redirecting from one site to another, and the original site is ranking for it's domain name keyword? i.e. leathershoes.co.uk is ranking for "leather shoes" but i've decided i want to create a larger, brandable site about all types of shoes. if it redirect will i lose ranking for "leather shoes"?
My old domain is 8 years old and the new is just a few months old...
Has anyone seen any evidence that Webmaster Tools - Change of Address tool is able to transfers longevity from the old to the new domain?
I can see how with 301 redirects Google can pass on the PR and re-index the new pages, but I am skeptical about Google's ability to harvest the original domain's reputation and longevity.

This advice will leave your site dropped from Google, why advise users so badly?
