I just want to thank you for such a straight forward and clean to the point review. I am trying to decide between the .40 or 9mm (the low bore axis makes me lean towards the .40) I also was curious if you would advise the FNX or the FNS (hammer or striker for this gun if you could only choose one). Also how does the magazine seat for you, any issues so far with that or this gun in general? your response is my determinant on whether i buy this as my first handgun. (I'm Southpaw!..need the ambi)
Great review John. Question - is the polymer frame stiffer than the FNP9? With my TLR1 mounted, I can grab the front of the light and flex the front portion of the frame downward, away from the slide...slight pressure easily creates a 1/16th inch gap.
Tons of options, large capacity magazine, light, efficient, can carry Cocked and Locked like my 1911s. I think I found my new gun. Thank you for the review.
Thanks for the review. Just picked up an FNX-9 and absolutely love it. For the others asking.. I have had no issues with the magazine catch in the FNX-9 as noted in some other vids. I'd suggest verifying yours before you buy.
Did you encounter any issues / problems with proper lock up of the magazine into the magazine well? During my research I have come across a lot of complaints about how they changed the magazine design from the FNP to FNX and how it is not as positive of a lock up.
I'd add: This pistol has two sear disconnects (lever that hooks the trigger to the sear for releasing the sear) one on each side, instead of just one. This pulls the sear evenly, and makes a very crisp and nice trigger. The magazine well is beveled, mags slide home really quickly. The mainspring is housed in the hammer/sear group, not in the mag well, which keeps dirt out. I have small hands, so I use my trigger finger to push the mag release, which keeps my shooting grip. Awesome pistol.
Just got my FNX9 today but haven't shot it yet although I'm itching to. This is a great review though. I like Glocks and my brother was wanting me to buy one for my first handgun but I wanted something different. This is way sweeter in my opinion :)
I have the FNP-45 Tactical and I've been thinking about buying a smaller caliber, smaller handgun in the future. It'd be really nice if they did a Tactical version of this with the slide machined for an RMR/Docter, threaded barrel, and raised Trijicon night sights. Even if they don't, it'd be very easy for me to switch between the two pistols.
I have a question though, because I'm in the last stages of deciding on purchasing a .45 ACP combat rated pistol that can survive anything and always work. My top contender right now is the FNP-45 Tactical..but I'm also considering the Px4 Storm SD, as well as the XDm-45 and the P220 Combat.
I guess my question is do the FNX series pistols have the same MIL-SPEC hardware that the FNP-45 Tactical (which was FN's entry for the JCP program a few years ago) has?
Great review. I just picked up one myself. Quick question on strong hand grip placement. Where do you rest your strong hand thumb? I shoot thumbs forward and with this grip I find my strong hand thumb constantly rubbing on the safety/decocker lever. Do you ride the safety 1911 style? Rest your strong hand thumb on your support hand thumb but slightly off the gun? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I bought this side arm because I couldn't get the one I really wanted and the gun store had a great deal on it and of course the cash was burning a hole in my pocket. This is by far my fave gun, it shoots great ( i can hit the target with a good spread), I borrowed my buddies flashlight accessory (just to get a feel for the weight and check out the look - which was freaking awesome by the way) I found I was hitting center mass almost every time. No Jams, no problems with the clips. Try it out!
I've had mine for about 2 months now and I love it. On the rare occasion I make a nice smooth unflinching pull it hits within an inch of center every time. About 800 rounds so far with 4 different brands of ammo and no jams. Only problem is one of the magazines was not allowing the slide to lock back but FNH is sending me a new one as I post this.
I've put about 1350 rounds though mine, and I've tried several different brands. So far, I've had no issues at all with various kinds of ammo. If you use SAAMI spec ammunition and stay away from reloads(this is in the manual) you should be okay. So far, I'm very impressed with the accuracy and reliability. I've had no problems at all.
Very good review, thank you. None of the pics/vids showed the location of your thumbs. I use a thumb high grip, and am curious is the location of the decocker/safety presents a problem for a thumbs high grip? Also, could this pistol be safely carried by decocking the hammer, safety off like a CZ P-01 or a Sig?
@hulkbuster1026 FNX 9 (and the FNX 40) has fully ambidextrous controls (safety/decocker, mag release, slide stop), whereas FNP 9 and 40 only have decocker and reversible mag release, and slide stop on one side only.
@mycrx89 They are very comparable as far as recoil and handling. Ergonomically, the fnx is a little nicer. The stippling LOOKS intimidating and rough, however it is a very comfortable gun. As you probably know from the fnp, there is a very low bore-axis which is going to reduce recoil and make it a very comfortable gun. The triggle pull on the X is better in double, and great in single. Its safety functions exactly like an HK. I'm a big fan of BOTH weapons :)
Just bought N.I.B for $525.00 @ Gunbroker. Transfer fees=$40.00. And yes, I will get DSP rebate $100.00. $465.00 final. FNX sold me on the grip angle, backstrap and safety/decocker function. Not to mention it is lighter than XD9mm sub that I have.
Nice gun but I prefer no safety on mine. I suggest anyone who carries without a safety to invest in a quality holster and proper firearms handling at all times. Best saftey is the one inbetween your ears (your brain). So far I've had no AD's with the exception of intensionally pulling the trigger forgetting I chambered another round. Stupid on my part...but a lesson well learned. GREAT REVIEW once again bro...can't wait for more!!!
