Red Sox announced that RHP Chris Smith cleared waivers and has elected to become a free agent.
Smith was designated for assignment last week after giving up 16 runs in 18 1/3 innings out of Boston's bullpen.

Florida State hasn't been to the College World Series since beating Miami in this Super Regional in '00.
This could be Florida State's year to make it back to the College World Series.
