I want to play like these music one day hopefully. i like being amazed by calculated and so accurate playing, This so excites me, Ok i shut my mouth up and go practice tonight!
This is amazing, love it. For me it doesn't talk to my soul, it talks to my intellect, which is cool, I have other music which is for my soul. But thats one reason why I think jazz like this is not very popular, I mean it has a following yes, but the average person cant relate I believe, im not knocking it wither as its amazing!
@pirn I actually lifted this tune - it's all 5/4, but the bass hits the root on the and of 5, so it's really syncopated,a dn all the melodic lines go over the barline ntil major arrivals. It's really sneaky.
Great performance. My country is so ugly and cruel these days, it is a great blessing to be reminded that whatever else we have done, we have also created this beautiful music.
@mpcguy yeah definitely well the tune is called 'lennie groove' which is a hint, its like turners tribute to lennie tristano and the kind of tunes he used to write... mark said he really checked out alot of warne marsh you can tell in those loooooong lines he does
WOAH.... excuse me, I just had to pick up my jaw off the floor after that opening Unison head between the sax & guitar.. this is jazz at a Very high level ..
Awesome! check out kurts moves at around 2:49 - 2:51! And I think he reached spiritual enlightenment at about 2:30! Kurt and Mark play so damn well together!
its called 'Lennie Groove' and its off marks album 'in this world' but the album version does not have kurt playing it has brad mehldau on piano instead its still great! its a tribute to lennie tristano so says mark.
God Dammnit that Rosenwinkel Solo was incredible, absolutly flawless to my ears. Just to see these guys locked in together going places in their solos and telling a story I loved every second of it. Time for me to go practice more.
Ugg. These types of jazz heads (melodies) are so annoying to me. Understanding that it is hard to execute does nothing for it's aesthetic function. Complexity is not of itself a raison d'etre.
I get what you're saying, but with the bassline and drumbeat you can clearly hear that it is supposed to be in contrast with the melody. It's an effect only achived by tasting the extremes a bit, and if that's what it takes to give the listener the feel that' is intended...!
Complexity can be simplicity, if done the wrong way. Simplicity can be complexity if done the right way. But then again, there's no rules to writing, if you intend the music to the way it is.
Listen to each note, and what each one has to say. They go by quickly, but the harmony is there. The overall shapes of the lines are actually pretty simple, but that's because Kurt and Mark are experts at shaping the lines they play.
I read an interview with him somewhere. He said that he was noodleing in a guitar shop in NY. He and the owner were floored by how good that particular guitar sounded so he picked it up.
Jouissance...

@pirn Hi!
The groove-time in all this song is 5/4
Form AAABA
all the A sections in 8 measures and B section in 14 measures.
The bass line is displaced and the melody begins in the 2d time.
Stay jazz!
