  • I want to play like these music one day hopefully. i like being amazed by calculated and so accurate playing, This so excites me, Ok i shut my mouth up and go practice tonight!

  • there's a bootleg of this set floating around, sounds pretty good too!

  • Love the unision lines, hearing that cool school influence, rosenwinkel is so excellent man

  • This is amazing, love it. For me it doesn't talk to my soul, it talks to my intellect, which is cool, I have other music which is for my soul. But thats one reason why I think jazz like this is not very popular, I mean it has a following yes, but the average person cant relate I believe, im not knocking it wither as its amazing!

  • what groove-time in this composition ? I hear as afro beat 6/8 and B part 5/4 ,but not sure...

  • @pirn I actually lifted this tune - it's all 5/4, but the bass hits the root on the and of 5, so it's really syncopated,a dn all the melodic lines go over the barline ntil major arrivals. It's really sneaky.

  • @pirn Hi!

The groove-time in all this song is 5/4

    Form AAABA

all the A sections in 8 measures and B section in 14 measures.

The bass line is displaced and the melody begins in the 2d time.

    Stay jazz!

  • 6:05. tom cruise from mission impossible studies the jazz situation. his final judgment: i approve

  • LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!

the groove is so eerie, but so beautiful!!

    the head is amazing

  • 2:48 - 2:59 goosebumps

  • Jesus... What a group

  • What year is this? Not this year but the year the video was shot. If it wasn't really recent and he's gotten a lot better than this, god help us all!

  • @4578a - this is from 2002, i think - right after The Next Step :)

  • Great performance. My country is so ugly and cruel these days, it is a great blessing to be reminded that whatever else we have done, we have also created this beautiful music.

  • Mark Turner = badass

  • when i first moved to nyc, this band played at smalls weekly, i used to love going so much

  • MD put it well, Ballard Scurries like a rabbit around his kit. Ballard for presidante!

  • maybe its my computer but it sounds like mark is playing through some kind of effect, sounds amazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is incredible! Does anyone know the name of this tune?

  • @4presr13 It's called Lennie Groove, written by Mark. The head on its own is seriously ridiculous!

  • They are in the Altered state of consciousness.

  • ahhhhhhhhhh! This is so sick!

  • Great!!

  • Nice

  • need to definitely go to a european jazz festival

  • check it at 5.55

  • when this caught in tape?

  • although different instrumentation and style it kind of reminds me of the stuff lee konitz and warne marsche used to do in the 50's. great stuff

  • @mpcguy yeah definitely well the tune is called 'lennie groove' which is a hint, its like turners tribute to lennie tristano and the kind of tunes he used to write... mark said he really checked out alot of warne marsh you can tell in those loooooong lines he does

  • @mpcguy i'd say it's definitly in that language =)

  • @mpcguy

Yah I have a hunch that the Lennie in "Lennie's Groove" is Lennie Tristano.

  • @mpcguy YES! someone gets it!

  • @mpcguy

hence- the song is Lenny Groove, after Konitz/Marsh mentor, Lenny Tristano.

  • @mpcguy it's basically the same concept :)

  • @mpcguy Its called " Lennie Groove" because it was written for Lennie Tristano...

  • WOAH.... excuse me, I just had to pick up my jaw off the floor after that opening Unison head between the sax & guitar.. this is jazz at a Very high level ..

    really staggering stuff.

  • @timjmoran

The head was played together but not in unison.

  • Awesome! check out kurts moves at around 2:49 - 2:51! And I think he reached spiritual enlightenment at about 2:30! Kurt and Mark play so damn well together!

  • jeff ballard is suppaaaaaaaaa

  • Ballard plays with everyone. Top 5 best contemp drummers now. Stunning.

  • Whoops. Missed the title in the beginning of the vid. Other question stands: on whose album does this gem reside? Mark's?

  • its called 'Lennie Groove' and its off marks album 'in this world' but the album version does not have kurt playing it has brad mehldau on piano instead its still great! its a tribute to lennie tristano so says mark.

  • What is the name of this tune? What album is it on? I need this immediately!

  • Lennie Groove on Mark Turner's "In this World"

  • flawless to your ears, nothing to rosenwinkels. dont practice cuz of them, do it better than them.

    ;). Jazz will never die.

  • God Dammnit that Rosenwinkel Solo was incredible, absolutly flawless to my ears. Just to see these guys locked in together going places in their solos and telling a story I loved every second of it. Time for me to go practice more.

  • amazing....

  • That's a great 4tet... Mark Turner is something special...

  • i heard mark turner was seriously injured recently. can anyone confirm that?

  • he cut part of his finger off with a saw. that was quite a few months back, hes recovered and back on tour again

  • jeff ballard is so sick!!!

  • It's part of his sound, just like his singing

  • that was directed at zeboink, by the way

  • ben is a f'ing rock

  • Fully!!

  • Ballard is amazing though.

  • Interesting..Simplicity is what should be? Elaborate.

  • I get what you're saying, but with the bassline and drumbeat you can clearly hear that it is supposed to be in contrast with the melody. It's an effect only achived by tasting the extremes a bit, and if that's what it takes to give the listener the feel that' is intended...!

Complexity can be simplicity, if done the wrong way. Simplicity can be complexity if done the right way. But then again, there's no rules to writing, if you intend the music to the way it is.

  • Listen to each note, and what each one has to say. They go by quickly, but the harmony is there. The overall shapes of the lines are actually pretty simple, but that's because Kurt and Mark are experts at shaping the lines they play.

"Music at any level is good."

  • miao

  • Yeah!!!

  • great epiphone tone :-)

  • kurt!

  • much better than the original on Mark's album

  • What song is this? What album is it from?

  • I am pretty sure it is "Lennie Groove" off of Mark Turners album "In This World"

  • I just noticed it said it in the beginning too.

  • what's w/ the epiphone?

  • He's been known to use an Epi Sheraton in his past. I don't know how current this performance was.

  • I read an interview with him somewhere. He said that he was noodleing in a guitar shop in NY. He and the owner were floored by how good that particular guitar sounded so he picked it up.

  • Playing an Epiphone... he's kinda bold! One may question the point of buying expensive gear...

  • incredible end of kurt's solo!

    and 3:58 rules! ;]

  • yummmmmm!

  • 3:58 = World Domination Mode

    =)

  • I want this DVD. If somebody have, PM please.

BTW, I'm so jealous peaole live in such country with this kind of great music broadcasted. In japan...nothig.
