Probably the most unhealthy food one can consume. Hawaii's plate lunches are full of fat, sodium, and starch. And most locals drink "fruit" punch or Aloha Maid drinks, thus adding a whole load of sugar. Das why get choke fat people in Hawaii!
loco moco doesn't mean anything in Hawaiian. They came up with the name because loco meant crazy in Spanish which they were studying in school. They thought it would be a cool and funny name. Also, I'm not sure you should eating that if your already breathing so heavy just trying to prepare it. Just saying.
I'm from Hawaii, originally and I have 2 comments: #1 I would put the gravy on the meat first then the egg on top. #2 That was way too much rice for one person. LOTS of calories! BUT good vid! I'm hungry now! :)
Damn good job Powerplant top I'm not sure but with your accent I assume your not from Hawai'i originally. If that true plz spread da aloha to the people you know in the states. I live in "da mainland" now and I really wish I could just go out and find Zippy's style chili or Loco Moco's instead of having to make it. If we can introduce more foods maybe it'll happen as everything my family and I (we are all in different states now) cook everyone of here loves lol.
@Pineappletaco Thanks for the nice words. Yep you are correct on the accent. I have only visited Hawai'i. I love how the food there is a mix of what is best from every where.
L&L Hawaiian BBQ sells Loco Moco, complete with a scoop of macaroni salad. Not sure of its authenticity, as I've never had it in Hawaii, but it is pretty damn good!
if you want to know...the 'birthplace' of the LOCO MOCO is in the town of Hilo,on the Big Island at the 'CAFE 100'. Only thing is that they serve already processed burgers, not 'homemade', but they have many different variations on the Loco Moco.
So if you are on the Big Island, go to the town of Hilo, which is closed to the HI Volcanoes National Park which is further southeast.
@hawaiiguy1 Thanks for the info. I don't know when but someday I will get to Hilo and this place will be on my list. Whats your favorite place to get Loco Moco. I know that question might start a war but I would love to hear where everyone likes to get there Loco Moco fix at.
I don't know how your family of four is build but that would feed my husband and son. That's it. lol My husband is over 6'6'' and my son is only 16months old but eats like a 4 year old.
irish, yes seared spam on this is great. I am working on a new version of this. Grilled burger with a spam fried rice. I think that I have it just need do make the video.
Dude, good job, this was my favorite meal to order while I was in Oahu. Sept 2-10, 2009. At first I was hesitant, but OMG after I had a plate, that's all I ate for breakfast for the rest of the time in Hawaii! Great great dish to eat, and very cheap.
powerplanttop, coming from someone who grew up and lives in Hawaii, this looks as authentic as it gets! Job well done! I like how you put the patties back in the gravy for a little while to help "marry" the flavors.
Note that many places here in Hawaii stack their loco moco dish like this: rice first, then on that put the burger patty(s), then on that goes the gravy, then finally top with the egg. But some put the gravy over the egg instead like you did. Some also do both: over the burger(s) and over the egg. There's many variations. Even the patty content and gravy varies a bit from here to there.
Not sure if folks here would use Worcestireshire sauce. Probably most use Shoyu, Hawaii's version of Worcestershire sauce.
Some of the better plate lunch joints here in Hawaii char-grill their burgers for the loco moco vs. pan-fry or griddle, but of course that works too, There's also one gourmet burger place here called 'The Counter' which uses a demi-glace base for their brown gravy, which I hear is excellent.
Oh, you also might wanna' add a scoop of Macaroni Salad on the side with that, which is another traditional (usually requisite!) Hawaii plate lunch staple.
You're welcome! If you wanna' see just about every form Loco Moco imaginable, go to my Tasty Island blog under the links page and look for the blog 'Big Island Grinds'. Search 'Loco Moco' at that site. There's all kinds!
jagwio, thanks I grew up eatting hamburger steaks with mashed potatoes or fies. The first time I was in Hawaii I was like this tatse like home with a twist. It is good stuff but not healty so I don't eat it every day. BTW throw some fried spam on there it is also good.
