Thanks for this video i have my car for a week now the first 3 days no one teach me i just doit my self I used to drive an automatic for more than 10 years is a lot better to have a manual the only problem is if you are on the fw and there is traffic i get a honda si 2002. good car.
Holding down the clutch and breaking instead of downshifting is terrible for the clutch. Doing this will were the clutch out quickly and it will have to be replaced more often. If you do not want to down shift while slowing down then just press down the clutch put the car in neutral then release the clutch and break as usual.
In my Honda which is a 4 speed I can "wiggle" the shifter even in gear. I asked some mechanics about it and they said that it's the way it was designed. What's your opinion?
ive got my driving test tomorrow but my instructor got a new car and i just cant get the hang of it i keep stalling every time i go and try and take off its so annoying i cant find the point in which the car starts to take off.
if you're shifting up, do you have to let go of accelerate, or can you keep the pressure, while clutching, shifting, then letting go of clutch?
also, when you are going from reverse to first, do you have feet down on clutch and brake, then shift to first, then switch right foot to accelerate, then let go of clutch slowly while foot is pressing lightly down on accelerate?
@halopwnmaster ur comment is a lil confusing x) but from what i see in the vid you take your foot off the gas then clutch then shift up then gas + let go of the clutch.
and yeah that sound correct for going from reverse to first
@halopwnmaster shifting up with gas n clutch its the worse thing you could do it will decrease the life of ur clutch n if ur trying to go fast as in like a drag race or sumthing like that shift faster
take it into nutral then hold clutch shift to 1st n slowly let off n put a little bit of gas as if u were taking off in an automatic
@TheAlexLeko i know what you mean. i just started yesterday and im already on the roads. I got it down with the starts but i get the occasional stalls and it's damn right embarrassing but never have i had more fun driving a car.
@CCAASSSCCAAAA ya I heard downshifting just makes it so the axels can't move so fast and results in torquing your engine that's nice for going up steep hills, but I have paddle shift so it may matter on standard?
Since when does downshifting hurt the transmission? I can see if you don't rev match the car before downshifting it can put wear on the drive train but rev matching and letting the car's engine vacuum do a lot of the braking is safe.
That technique saves brakes and gas (in some vehicles). And when used with the normal brakes of the car, shorter braking distances (which is good when you're trying to stop before hitting something).
Seeing that this is a BEGINNER videos I will let it slide =P
@1994JoeTurner really i always thought you had to do that at start. yeah your right though i never thought of that. well im also a beginner at stick shift anyway.
really the trick in using a manual trans is getting a feel for the clutch pedal. Even though i have been driving stick shift for 26 years if i drive a type or make of car with a manual transmission i never driven before it takes a short while to shift it like a pro. I suppose this has to do with that certain makes have long clutch pedal travel and the amount of pressure to depress the clutch pedal also varies with certain makes as well.
This is a good basic video on this subject. I hope viewers who are new to driving a manual transmission car will recognize that this video does not address conditions such as needing to downshift when going uphill or when moving in traffic that requires slowing down to a point where a lower gear must be used.
@farmpondfun Or you can do what My Mum Did, Teach me how to drive a manual out in the rural area's then I drove for the rest of the time on my L's (in NSW Australia we have 4 stages of License L's (learner) P1 (Red's) P2 (greens) Full unrestricted License takes 4 years to go from L's to full license) drove an auto then got my red P's mum bought me a manual Car in the middle of No where took off with Nan and said Now you drive home (and I live in the blue mountains twisty and Hilly worked it out)
@8747800 Such absolute statements are silly. The rpm at point of shifting varies depending on the situation. How quickly does the driver need to accelerate? If mild acceleration fits the situation and driver's preference, a 4-cyl engine can quite nicely be shifted below 3K rpm. Also, your statements about 4, 6, & 8 cyl engines is, I believe, not necessarily true.
@0fg4 What point are you trying to make? Are you saying the driver does not need to use the gas peddle to increase rpm? If so, that's non-sense. Normal driving of a manual trans car does require increase of rpm via pressure on the gas peddle right at the moment the clutch peddle has been released to the "friction-point".
the chap says "dont downshift" when coming to a stop....BULLSHIT!, its called engine braking aka compression braking.its FINE to do this, if you do it properly. double clutching in a synchro is fine too, as long as you dip clutch, stick into N, rev, dip clutch shift into gear, some folks also say double clutching is no good, IT IS FINE, if done correctly.
@deviatea I agree, but this is a video for beginners. Those are more advanced techniques so they can learn those later. Also it's not really necessary to downshift every single gear and double clutch in everyday driving.
In fact, where I live there are lots of hills and It's safer downshifting while braking but I just use heel and toe to synchronize and I usually do just one downshift, as an example, if I'm in 5th gear I downshift to 3rd and then press the clutch again just before stopping.
the other day for the first time i drove a manual... it sucked hard! it was a brand new ford ranger 3.0 disel engine 3,000 cc .... fucking stalled 4-5 times at the lights fml!
First car I drove was stick.. I slammed the brakes in 3rd gear and stalled.. almost hit a ups truck :). Thank god I learned it. So much better than auto!
@bigpappabear69 Your car will let you know when to shift gears by the sound it makes.. Usually when your RPM goes up to around 3-5,000 you should shift up.... You should shift down when slowing down to a complete stop, or making quick turns, etc
so when you brake and you're about to put your stuff in park do you put your shift stick back at first gear or when do you put your shift in first gear
@masterEDDO888 Oh, I didnt mean hes a bad driver or bad person, im just saying you cant say someones good at something when doing something alot of people know. I didnt say he was good because i dont have anything to go off of, but i didnt say he was bad.
