Not only is it great this scene was left out for the fact that it makes the pace at the beginning faster and more ominous, it also would have detracted from the epic moment we meet Luke Skywalker later in the film.
I think, this shows exactly the difference between the old and the new films: the scene is nice, but not really necessary and it slows down the plot (for no good reason) and sort of diminiushes the effect of Vader's first appearance. As much as I like to watch it, as much I am happy it is not in the final cut (same for the bar scene, where Luke reports about the battle to his friends, which was cut). In the new films there are much too many of those scenes, kind of spoiling the story
Good that they left this scene out. Vader and the Empire come across much more threatening in today's cut. Also, the pace is a bit faster without the Luke scene.
Great job with thedialogue and sound effects.. it's incredible how perfectly you found in the radiodrama the material to do it. GL said in the audio commentary that in the end he removed this scene in order that the story was told from the point of view of the droids (rather than the main character), in analogy to Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. And I agree. Nevertheless it's great how it would have been this scene!
A CD-ROM called Behind the Magic released in 1998 had this and other deleted scenes from Star Wars( A New Hope) but that to my knowledge is the only place before youtube you could get these scenes.
On the dvd "making of" they show Lucas' original finished film and it pretty much looked like this. They knew it wasn't something that could be released, so, I think it was Lucas' or Ford Coppola's wife who was an editor and some other people were brought in to hurriedly redo the film. I was fairly astonished at that admission appearing on the dvd, though they don't dwell on it.
Yeah, I remember the excitement there was about the preqs, but I told people, don't get your hopes up. I remembered Howard the Duck, and I remembered the Ewoks, and one could sort of figure out that Lucas wasn't really this great story teller, that he basically just got lucky, and that Irving Kirshner is why "Empire" is everyones fav. One thing Lucas can take credit for is the time he spent writing star wars, making well developed characters and plot. I actually read the book in high school...
and remember it not being so bad (basically the movie but with the thoughts of the characters added). What little I remember is Vader thinking to himself about the officers being competent, but lacking in this or the other way, and I remember at one point Lucas describing Vader having arched brows, a sort of imposing figure even before the mask (in other words, he didn't look like a former member of a boy band). That was a LONG time ago, a looong time ago.
I also remember hearing about a sequel trilogy. That would be so incredible!!!
But then after the new movies came out I really didn't see it ever being brought out on the table. If he could capture the same epicness the original had it would totally restore my faith in him, I'd say he should go back to having other people direct his movies... as you can see by the new movie he really lost his groove
If you've listened to the radio drama, there is a great deal of character development and fleshing out of scenes that are very nice.
Can I see why stuff was cut from the final film? Sure. That said, when taken with the whole (and the radio drama was based off of the script with all these deleted scenes), I think the Star Wars film would have been find with this extra stuff.
Uh, hard to tell. From 0:54 it surely can be heard in RotJ somewhere in Luke's scenes on Endor (or Dagobah?), but I'm not sure if it is one piece with that of from 0:34 or just edited together.
That's the one thing I didn't like about the DVD releases: no deleted scene menu like the prequel DVDs. The only deleted scenes on it I recall were viewable in the "Empire of Dreams" documentary (One from Episode IV and one from V).
GOD, I love nuggets like these!! I wonder if Luke wearing a bucket-hat influenced the decision to cut these scenes?.. i know.. i know.. not for that reason..lol
I like the cut scenes but why does Luke want TreadWell to come along anyway? Maybe so the Jawas don't steal him? In any event, the scene should have been included IMO but changed so that Luke is too excited to try to bring the droid and just says, "I have to get in to Anchorhead . . . I'll pick you up on the way home."
Thanks for this! You really did a good job incorporating the radio stuff with the footage. I do lament the fact that there's NOT an official release with all of the "Lost" footage like this and the Biggs stuff. Keep up the good work if you come across anymore unseen Star Wars footage.
Nice. Thanks for uploading this, good work syncing the radio drama dialogue with the footage. Again another scene that might have been better reinserted into the 1997 special edition. Oh well.
It's like Lucas doesn't make the changes that SHOULD be made, he finds other pointless things to change like "han shot first" and adding "Jedi Rocks" that sucky song from Return Of The Jedi. I'd like to see this stuff added back in, the scenes where Luke's hanging out with his friends and such...
I was majorly pissed off when the DVD's of the original trilogy were released. None of these f--king cutscenes! Just some lame documentary of George babbling.
I remember when E4 was shown on CBS it showed the Biggs and Luke scene toward the begining.
I've heard about some deleted scenes from E5 about Leia and Luke getting all incestuous (sp?). Pretty damn sick, but sounds intruiging.
In conclusion, those DVD's are a God damned rip-off!
Freakin' sweet. Would've been better in colour, but the Wikipedia article says there's no sound and that dialogue may never have been recorded, but someone should fix that and point a link to here! :P
When I read the Marvel Comics rendition in 1977, which added the cut scenes, I enjoyed it more than the movie. These scenes are important in creating the drama, although Lucas may have been more concerned with effect and polish.
Luke begins only as an observer, then gets pulled in, then becomes the hero. This hints at autobiography, since any director begins by watching films, then...
It always makes me wonder where some of the famous photos of the characters that didnt appear in the movie come from (if that makes sense) also like the photo from A new hope with Han and Chewie with their bow/pistol. kinda like luke wearing the hat that never appeared in the movie....
Excellent! I've known about that scene from when I read issue #1 of the comic book adaptation before the movie came out. It's great to finally see it, in any form.
