Keep in mind this was way back in 1995, when most people didn't even know what a "taskbar" or the "Windows key" was. Sure, the Mac and the GUI was hardly anything new, but Windows 95 was a radical change from Windows 3. And in a very good way.

Windows 3.1 was still in fairly wide use when Windows 95 was released. Even as recently as Windows 98, a lot of programs were still written to run on the Windows 3.x family.

Windows 3.1 was the version of Windows that came before Windows 95, but it wasn't the *operating system* that did. Versions of Windows before 95 weren't actually operating systems, but were just graphical interfaces running on TOP of the actual Operating system, MS-DOS. DOS 6.22 was the last operating system before Windows 95.

(Technically, Windows 95 DID run on DOS - version 7.0 - but it hid it/made it part of Windows. Not until XP did Windows truly run on it's own.
