For those who are wondering about purple Vortigaunts. (Spoilers)

From what I have gathered, when they turn purple, it indicates deep submersion into the Vortessence (the energy they can control, they attack with it, start machines, etc.) In Episode 2, when you leave to get the Antlion Larval Extract to heal Alyx, the Vortigaunts speak of 'deep submersion in the Vortessence' requiring Larval Extract.

You know when you beat Half Life 2, the Gman shows up and talks to you about how you did a good job and all, then he puts in a sleep stasis thing, which basically slows down time for you, like he did last time at Half Life 1, so you slept for 20 years in god knows where.

The purple vortigaunts at Episode 1, however, took out out of Gmans stasis so you can stabalize the core in the citadel so resitance members have enough time to escape before it blows. Gman got pretty pissed.
