I just read this book and I really enjoy it. What I find refreshing about the book is that it adds a different voice to the narrative. Even do he was educated in the USA you can see Zakaria's ability to examine the USA, China and India from a outsider perspective but with all the knowledge of an insider. The only other writer that does this at this time is Juan Enriquez Author of as the future catches you. It really takes living in multiple nations to be able to examine nations.

Taking into account that this interview was made in 2008, it really amazes me how accurate Fareed Zakaria's points are. Many are unable to think deep and come to terms with these points in 2011, yet he made them in 2008.
In international affairs, three years is a very long time. I wonder what he would say today.
Sure the growth of China and India is good. But what about the income disparities? What about the standard of living for China and India? If we don't deal with climate issues, all other issues will seem trivial because of the devastating changes in world climate (droughts, floods, etc.). India, as a country never existed until the British came. The British ruled a significant part of the Indian subcontinent (including present day India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). Nepal was somehow able to retain its sovereignty even after the British came as neither side won the war. Nepal was later forced to sign the "Sugauli Treaty" under which Nepal lost 1/3rd of its territory which now remains with India (UP, HP, some parts of Bihar and West Bengal).

I am not personally rooting for theocracy. American Founding Fathers are there with you. The problem I here is the departure from their original intent. Separation of Church and State has been misconstrued and we have moved the nation from Under God and now we have the resurgence of the Dark Ages. Id say Secular Humanist or Atheism is worse.

Its got nothing to do with attacking Serbia. America's decline is four-fold; loss of traditional societal and moral values (1960's), loss of patriotic fervor and the rise of the fashionable hippy/counter-culture movement (1960's-70's), the increasing lack of will of the U.S. government and people to do what is necessary in wartime (Vietnam onwards), and the decline in the quality of the U.S. military due to political correctness and letting women into the armed forces (80's).

America's problem is not only economic. They lack the moral authority to impose our culture over theirs. They - on their side - lack the moral correction to impose judgement on ours and to bring God's judgement on the US. This is NOT economics. It is MORAL. Zakaria's culture obviously is not western; it is probably muslim's. The interviewer obviously can't understand why - after opening the markets - the east is still trying to debunk the US. China is only riding along. They want to be No 1.

China cared for the Chinese after the earthquake. This kind of behavior is very American (god knows why he thinks like that?), and, therefore, when practiced by other countries is a danger to the US. So loving one's own people has been patented?

Fareed Zakaria is an excellent Journalist and his book is a must read for those who are interested in the future of the US. We are still no. 1, but we must be realistic about for how long. Personally, I would keep an eye on India more than China as a rising power (economic & military) because they are a Democracy and they are excellent software engineers.
