I truly love Denise in this episode. Flake or not, she was a very good person. She did exactly what she should have done, which is put Olivia first and foremost. She understood what it was to raise a child biologically yours or not. She never tried to be Olivia's "mom" but she certainly treated her like a daughter. Well done.

i don't think this portray Black woman as insensitive and controlling. It's a family thing---a comfort thing that comes from a close family. Like everyday in your house you used please and thank you for every little action. And as far as sensitivity thing--Clair was about to make them clear the table and put the food back until Cliff was there to join them. AND let's also remember this is a sitcom---things are naturally overdramatized for comedic effect.

I always liked this episode. I can understand how Paula felt, anyone would. There's always the kid who wants to please the parents, please the family, but never have the chance to please themselves. Almost like some parents are living their lives through the children, and that's not right nor is it fair. Yeah, she felt guilty, she even had to go to a shrink to get her life back in order. But at least she saw her child when she could and kept in contact with her, and she was grateful for Denise.

I think they are leaving the role open for her just in case they decide to have her come back. :)
