hi davie i was wondering could you use cock fibres as a substitute for the legs instead of pheasant tail because im finding the pheasant tail hard to get
It does help to have good eyesight when tying the very small patterns but always tye with a good light and with a light background so that you can see the fly much easier, I'll send you a link to the lamp I use which has a magnifier to help you in certain flies.. I wish you lots of luck..
thank you Davie for this nice fly. i had a very good luck fishing for steelhead in new york. it's my favorite nymph. i tied it in few colors but the orange worked the best. u r the man
Hello Davie, thank you for sharing your great patterns and fly tying skills. I have been enjoying learning to tie, watching your videos and the the videos of other excellent tiers. What sizes do you typically tie this pattern with. By the size of your fingers in comparison to the hook, I am guessing 16/18 ? Thanks again. Tight lines.. Douglas
It's a size 14 but you could tye this fly from size 10s to as small as you can go, the reason why is that it's a great pattern and will represent many a mayfly or caddis coming off...
Hello Davie. Thanks for your feedback. We are having a good season down here in Patagonia. But the best is still to come, because the big brown trouts will start migrating upstream in April. Im talking about the Limay river to be precise. Your tips on how to fish with nymphs are really helpful. What you say about caddis moving upwards very fast in order to hatch makes sense and explains why I had good catches when retreaving the line. Thanks again for your time and all the best. Yours Fernando
Hi Davie. I´m from Argentina. You´re a kind of fly-tying hero for me and a bunch of friends down here. I have a question regarding how to fish with this pattern and nymphs in general. I normally cast upstream and let it drift freely. But, to my surprise, the best catches (and most of them) occurr when I am retrieving the line. This fact puzzles me and can´t find an answer. Do trouts find the nymph behaving like a small streamer? That goes against the book, but....I have no clue.Thanks. Fernando
Thankyou for the kind words, and I hope you are having a great fishing season down in Argentina..
If I was fishing for grayling I would definitely cast upstream and drift the nymphs freely but for the brown trout then I would fish it all ways but for the fish to come on to a fly like this means that they really want it. I find this more when caddis are coming off as they do swim up to hatch really fast..I hope this helps.
These flies are absolute killers. And if you make the thorax out of violet or purple ice dubbing . . . you'll be laughing. The grayling woun't know what hit'em :D.
Hi Davie,Will you be exhibiting in any of the fishing expos in Ireland this winter?I would love to meet you and thank you for all the stuff I've learned this last while.Keep it up cos' you are doing outstanding work.Cheers!
I'm sorry but I don't have any plans to come over but you never know plans do change. I know that I would enjoy myself as with the good people of Ireland you are always made welcome...
I fish these flies mostly upstream allowing them to drift with no resistence which I find takes most fish but I will always try them as many ways as I can...
I tyed the nymph on a Partridge of Redditch SUD which is a dry fly hook but I found it worked well for this pattern I do feel that I need to find a stronger one as it's not meant for this type of fly, that's why I didn't mention it...
