I am from South Africa, and I've been to Zambia and Namibia and almost everywhere in South Africa during my life, and 2 weeks ago I moved away from there. I love the way you portray my beautiful continent to the rest of the world. Thank you
That bus ride scene reminded me of entire days stuck on a small tour bus or jeeps on the roads in Egypt. I was there for 17 days, but a lot of those days were driving uncomfortably from place to place. Amazing trip. I'm glad your trip went well also.
I was at this thing called revolve over the weekend and you could sponsor a child there and there was this thing called thirty hour famine and it's used to raise money and I raised over $500
Its almost like your making fun of Zambia. "people think Africa is just huts" -whose they? "they have a computer tech class which is mental" Woah, they have computers in zambia and they teach how to use them....crazy!!!! "they even have an internet cafe and shops" -Its 2010, not 1900. "His cloth door and his HIFI SYSTEM AND TV!!!!!" -again....you make out like no one in Zambia knows what a TV is. Zambia is a 'third world' country, but amazingly still know about technology and living.
@jsr9422 He's talking about how the common perception of Zambia in society is. There's a lot of ignorant people running around who only know Africa from what they see on TV, which is a lot of commercials about extremely poor people who don't even have clean water! And if you don't even have clean water, how are you going to have a HIFI SYSTEM AND TV!!?
He's just showing how stereotypes can be misleading while simultaneously blowing the minds of anyone with those stereotypes.
@Cheratomo I think you have misunderstood my comment-or maybe i have misunderstood yours. I don't have the perception of Zambia, I was highlighting how Alex had these perceptions, and it is quite ignorant for somoene visiting the country. But your saying he was acting a little sarcastic to show his viewers this is not what the country is like?
@jsr9422 Yes, I'm saying he's acting sarcastic. Sorry about that, I didn't mean you specifically had those views of Zambia, I meant that the more ignorant people in the world has that view about them. I was using 'you' to mean 'people in general'. xD
He was definitely being sarcastic to show that Zambia is not just a place with little huts where people starve to death, but is instead as much of a culturally active place as anywhere else in the world.
@jsr9422 I am aware that I have absolutely nothing to do with this conversation but Id like to say that its nice to see two people in youtube comments actually discussing their differing opinions in a civilized manner and coming to a conclusion rather then just trolling the comments typing awful things about one another (:
I actually have a sponsor child in Togo (which is... Somewhere in Africa).. Anyway, it made me really happy to see that it actually does help.. Because I sort of had the same feeling as you did, even though I decided to sponsor a child anyway ;) So.. Yay..
I just want you to know that this video inspired me to sponsor a child through World Vision. I should be getting a letter from her soon, I'm so excited!!
I just want you to know that this video inspired me to sponsor a child through World Vision. I should be getting a letter from her soon, I'm so excited!!
This totally just reminds me of my trip to Nicaragua. You honestly don't expect it to be so developed but it is. And they are so similar. It makes you realize we are one kid: mankind.
Aw I wish I had enough money to sponsor a child :( Need a job..... I did buy some birth certificates on the world vision site though :) Want to save up £45 so I can buy a llama. Partly to help, but partly so that I can say I've bought someone a llama. It just sounds funny.
Do they learn how to farm stuff other than cabbage? Like other important nutritional food items? I sure hope so. Last thing I need to know is how world vision promotes 1 crop farms. :c
"People think Africa is just huts with children wasting away inside them" Um no. Most people don't. Or at least people who don't actually believe stereotypes. You didnt expect anywhere to have a computer, or wow, they have communities too!?!? I understand this is for a good cause, but why send people who obviously have no real clue as to whats going on, or of the bigger picture. This video is quite patronising in it's attitudes about Africa.
I'd argue that it's best to send people who don't know what it's like there anyway. It teaches them. What's the point of showing people who know what it's like while keeping the rest in the dark? As for this being patronizing, that's ridiculous. He's just surprised how similar it is. I get the same feeling every time I travel. We just don't think of people doing the same thing we do because that's never the image we're given.
OMG i LOVE this, last year i went to zambia for a month as it happens we went to voluneer at a little village called Kalonje , only 70km from mpika, mpika was the first place we'd seen chocolate in two weeks! we stocked up on our rice and biscuits and stopped off in one of the internet cafes, loved it! xx
The cabbage reminds me of a place in Iceland where they got two bags of seed sent to them. One was cabbage and one was for grass. There were no labels on them so they just guessed and instead of grass, there is a cabbage hill :') But this is really amazing. I've done some stuff like this as well, I spent time and money to raise money for a children's school in Cambodia. It felt good doing that.
I'm from South Africa... Which people don't believe because "you're white and your accent sounds totally british!" >_< Americans aren't very good at accents. Anyhoo, thanks for telling people a little more about Africa... I still get asked if there were lions walking around in my village. You mean were there rabbits hopping around near my air-conditioned house in a normal neighborhood? Why, yes. Yes there were.
@DeliciousCustard Hahaa! Thats funny. People are so stupid. I'm from New Zealand and I've just come back from Europe. All the Americains I met didn't even know New Zealand existed. One of them still thought the Queen was our president. She also thought the Queen ran Britain...so...*headdesk* Americains especially don't seem to have much idea about the rest of the world. Not all of them, but a majority.
Seeing Tom wearing that lip nalm made me think of when I saw a guy at my school wearing the same kind, and I thought it was lipgloss, and I touched the boy's lips and smelled my fingers, trying to see what it was on his lips..... Goodtimes. Need I tell you that the video just changed my view of Africa? Nah, I think you already know.
