Hey Doug. How are you. Had a blast with you and the guys in 1994, It's me Annette from Cali. Had a blast with you guys. One of the best times in my life. I sing lead vocals in 3D-C. I willn try to get in touch with you. Hope you mom is good. She is a sweetie. If you read this my email address us threedicksandachick@yahoo.com
I have this whole video plus 12 hours more of old Suffo gigs, I miss original Suffocation
actually I got loads of old gigs from the 90's Malevolent, Monstrosity, deicide, solstice, cannibal, Gorguts, Obituary, Eulogy, Disincarnate,Ressurection,Gonna have to pay for those though, too much soul to just throw up on here.
I'd say there new stuff is like ehh I don't know it's good but anything before 04 is the best 04 and older, suffocation and blood oath are okay STILL within their roots but not as deep or heavy probably more technical
Is it just me, or does Josh look like he should be in The Orphans gang from The Warriors? "You see what you get Warriors?!!! You see what you get when you mess with Suffocation?!!!"
Well, if the date is correct in this video that would mean it was filmed around the Reincremated demo days before they were part of Relapse or even Roadrunner for that matter. Effigy of the Forgotten was released in late '91
I remember the Right Track Inn. Saw the Zen Tricksters there, it is pretty small. Doug Cerrito is the fuckin man on guitar. It's still too bad he left Suffocation.
Luc Lemay called Doug Cerrito "the ultimate Death Metal monument". I can only agree.
His writing and playing was what made Suffocation so special (I think). He played and wrote for the only good album that Hate Eternal put out, so that only goes to prove his power further.
imho, conquering the throne was a mediocre endeavor at best. H.E. didnt hit full pelt until king of all kings(make no mistake though, cerrito was the man, i just didnt like h.e.'s first album.
I, Monarch was the greatest album. Conquering the Throne and King of All Kings were great, above average, easily, but they don't compare to I, Monarch.
In regaurds to the video, I like how they were open enough to tell their fans their address's, for demo's and such. Very cool!
I've heard he started a business and has no time for music anymore.
I have the reissued "Erosion of Sanity" CD, and in the liner notes Luc tells that he met the Suffocation guys when he was in new york, and they took him to their rehearsal spot and played some new songs for him (for the yet to be recorded "Breeding The Spawn"), and that he was amazed at their technical level and it was inspiring for him.
Personally i think Doug was one of the true guitar heroes and innovators of the DM genre.
Doug,Terry+the whole crew that are/were involved w/Suffocation were always cool dudes.I lived right around them for a long time+shortly will be going back to Suffolk County,Long Island.Since I was(+am still)a musician who went to school+lived there for 17 Yrs., I became quite acquainted w/some of the best bands out there.Jay,Suffo's Manager, who also sings for DBA who my old drummer/best bud played with for years.Because of this connection,I was able to meet, befriend+jam w/Doug+Terry on guitar..
..BTW,when I say that I jammed+hung w/those guys,I don't mean that as something that is supposed to make me "cool".I'm the last starstruck guy there is!In fact,I'd rather hang w/Suffocation than MANY other people in the limelight or celebrities! My point was how I'll never forget that back then,in the earlier 90's,I was convinced that no guitarist was as technical as myself+my other guitarist (typical immature 19Yr old thinking)until I met the older dudes in Suffo! They are very proficient!!
No problem at all! I definitely have a few Suffo stories up until pretty recently. The thing is, aside from their awesome technical abilities and writing, as far as personality goes, they're just cool ass dudes! I saw Terry at the Park Bench in Suffolk County LI a few Yrs back, when he was growing out those braids+we already knew each other from Yrs prior+he just was emphasizing on the importance of keeping music HEAVY.I guess he meant that it didn't matter if it was fast+technical like Suffo..
(Cont)Once we started playing, the music was just EXPLOSIVE!I never meant anyone who played at that speed+so fluently+solid!Until this day, they are still at the top of the pile.I still love the technical stuff but nowadays I'm more into the FEELING than I am pure technical proficiency. Some bands have both, like Suffo!
Anyway, sorry if I filled this up.I should have written you personally.I'll probably be speaking w/Jay Fligman soon so I'll mention the fans on YouTube if you want! He was the Mgr.
Yeah, it's interesting that you mentioned the feeling in the music. it's a thing that's very rarely mentioned regarding Death Metal. I too always thought that Suffocation had just the right amount of feeling that they combine with the oppressive heaviness and technical style. It's never on the surface, but often hidden in the structure. Just like they never really give in to melodic inclinations. There are many hints, but never a full blown melody, which makes it all the more interesting.
Good points here. This is pretty much what I'm talking about. The hinting of such musical attributes such as melody as opposed to the outright use of it, does certainly add some sort of element of mystery or wondering.
Out of all the DM bands I've listened to+all that sound quite similar to one another, these guys really stand out. They're so underrated due to the kind of music they play. It's funny how they're mentioning Apparition here, as that was my old Mgr's/friend's band which later...
...Which turned into Sorrow. This was one of the very first Roadrunner/RoadRACER DM bands ever. His connection w/Roadrunner was certainly valuable to my old band, being that he was our Mgr. His name is Brett Clarin.Very interesting dude who I went to college with.He was a PHYSICS major+then graduated+started his own underground music store w/anything from punk to death metal but "NO ELVIS" or some ad like that..
These are cool memories. These are cool, intelligent people who share common interests.
...(CONT) or Hate Eternal etc. OR just heavy like Crowbar or something on a slower, doomier note or something. At that time, I also remember being concerned about heavy music becoming endangered as a musical species too.I've seen them at rehearsal since then+they're the real deal.Very pro.Back in the early 90's, my friend Jay Fligman told me how he was managing a DM band so I went down to meet them in, I think,Doug's basement or Josh's (not sure)+Jay wanted me to bring my axe+amplification....
Doug Cerrito Is one of the Baddest most Underated players ever. What a damn shame. All the Suffo shit and then that Hate Eternal album. Fuckin' legend
Doug is working for some computer firm in the states and Josh is living in Australia... Just around the corner from me actually. He recorded my old bands debut cd.

No wonder Erosion of Sanity had tons of Suffocation influence...
Doug must have greatly influenced Luc during the writing process of the album.
What is Doug doing nowadays? He disappeared after releasing Conquering The Throne.
