I'm 17 years old now, I got bullied again, but I say fuck 'em. I don't even care about them anymore. They can't hurt me. As long as I got my pc and internet I'm happy.
I'm amazed at some of the comments. If you don't have a child with autism or understand it at all then educate yourself before you criticize or pass judgement on what you know nothing about.I totally see the mom's point here. These are typical videos that I do with my daughter to document change, progress, or for plain memories. This mom chooses to share it and I appreciate it.Us mom's compare learn and support eachother in this journey and if this isn't for you, then do us all a favor and move on.
Some of the guys bashing the mom here, you have absolutely no idea what it takes to bring up an moderate to severely autistic as in this case and unless you are in her boat, don't try to pass some ridiculous comments or ideas of yours.
i think its great tat ppl are willin to sho and share with us the facts about autisum and for those of you that has negitive things to say you all should be ashamed of yourselves and just by the comments that were made i ca tell that u have not lived with an autisic child this video can give ppl so much hope for there loved ones that you couldnt understand............ to the mother of hazel thank you
My son has PDD and daughter has Autsim, I know how much work and the importance of early intervention therapy. I am inspired and amazed my my kids everyday when I think of how they were at two years of age before they began therapy. They are both what challenges me most and gives me the most joy.
Best wishes to you and Hazel. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
I love how all these people want to down this Mom for talking about her daughter like she's not there. Question for the brilliant commentators: Do you realize that most autistic children are completely unaware of their surroundings unless attention is drawn to it( like when mom says her name)? Before you condemn a mother, maybe you should know what you are talking about.
InsanePictureFrame. In one aspect I do believe what your saying is true, but then again, maybe the mother felt better about it because she could talk about the "problems" that she has. People deal with things in different ways, I'm not saying your wrong in what you said, I'm just saying that don't judge people on a first impression, and take in consideration of how people deal with things differently.
"she talks and functions much like a normal child" !?! Are you serious! Telling a bunch of strangers that your child isn't normal within earshot of her? I've met many people with autism that are a lot more "normal" than many people without autism. If you treat her as though she has something wrong with her rather than helping her with any problems she has as a person it'll do a hell of a lot more damage than the actual autism! We're all different, and there is no "normal".
do you always talk about her like shes not there? dont you think she hears you? dont you think she feels like shes diffrent and there is somthing wrong with her from hearing you talk about her like that?
@CyBeRTRoNFLuX Don't ALL parents and adults talk about children like they aren't there? This appears to be quite a normal cross-cultural trait. Not treating all people of all ages as equal in status doesn't mean you don't respect them, it just takes time for them to become individuals who can speak for themselves.
It's unfortunate that there are so many armchair doctors on YouTube willing to share a full diagnosis based on a 2 and half minute video.
The fortunate thing is that Hazel Mae and her mother are willing to share their experiences with everyone. So many people out there need to know that they are not alone in their battles.
I have little doubt that Hazel has helped more people than all of these fake YouTube doctors combined.
I've got a degree in child psychology, and I can tell you that this is Autism. Notice how she has trouble looking directly into peoples faces, and doesn't respond normally when spoken to (except for in the first instance).
In the 1970s they expanded the classification for autism, they now classify children with very mild mood disorders. There isn't anything wrong with this child.
God gave us free will to do anything and avoid many things. Autism may cause one to crave perfection but we can thank Adam & Eve's disobedience for losing perfect life. We don't have to end up with no hope like hem. Doing the will of our father Jehovah who is the most high will give us a purpose. i suggest you read the book - What does the bible really teach? Simple.
I am so happy to hear she is doing so well, my daughter Ella was diagnosed at 18 monhs and has had lots of therapy ever since. - check out her videos at ghostorchid100
im trying to learn about autism because my friend just learned her son is and they are trying to raise money to get him a dog. So i just wanted to learn a bit about what they are going through and everyone on here is very helpfull thanks
I have six year young son, who has been diagnosed with autism! who is in special ED, He has been involved in speach therapy ever since he was about one and a half years old and I must say that it has help tremendously he still has trouble pronounsing word'showever I can't even imgine what he would be like had we not had this service offard to us! I also would like to add that he love's to play viedo games, . thank-you amy for having the courge to put your hazel mae up for everyone to view.
I'm sorry, but intelligence has nothing to do with autism. I have it and my IQ is over or about 120. Temple Grandin is near genious and she was low functioning autistic at the start. Autism is a spectrum disorder which means that we can be high functioning medium functioning or low functioning. By seeing the video, I'd say she has high-functioning autism which is commonly referred to as HFA, AS, or Asperger's Syndrome. Thought that I would just clarify things.
"I am autistic", not "I have autism". "I have autism" carries the unspoken implication that autism is something completely separate to you, as opposed to an ingrained, inescapable part of your identity that has been there since birth.
Asperger's Syndrome is also (albeit subtly) different from HFA.
There is actually a debate between the difference between HFA and AS. I am one of the people who believe they are one in the same. The people who are nonverbal before they are 5 or so and high-functioning to me are "recovered" autistics like Temple Grandin. She calls herself a recovered autistic. Also, autism is a part of who I am but it is not all of who I am. I am autistic, but there is more to me. Sorry if I gave a wrong impression.
After doing some more research, I have learned that high-functioning autism is not a recognized diagnosis. Therefore, AS must be high-functioning autism in the event that we are mildly autistic and are high-functioning. See the connection?(Not a sarcastic question)
If you need to ask why I think you are incredibly ignorant when you are using phrases like "mildly autistic", then I suggest you look for another career path, and do it quickly before you end up hurting someone.
You are hurting someone by telling me to change my career. No, Temple Grandin herself told me to go with this career. What do you want me to say instead of mild autism? That someone is autistic but not too much? Also, don't pick out the little things I say. I do the same thing, but it is still unacceptable. You have no right telling me what I can and can't do. You've hurt someone, but how will I hurt someone?
Better you be hurt now and avoiding making the ghastly mistakes that the psychiatrists I saw when I was young made.
If you really need it explained to you why there is no such thing as "mild autism", then I think Grandin would agree with me that her recommendation was rather ill-advised. Try being basically told to give up on the idea of ever having a normal relationship with another person, and then you might start to understand how offensive a word like mild can really be.
You don't have to give up the idea of a normal relationship. I believe that autistic people can have relationships, but it would take a lot of treatments(no cure involved). I'm not going to stop trying to be a psychiatrist. I don't know if you have noticed, but there are a lot more severely impaired people out there than you think. I'm not in a psychiatric session yet. I have yet to be trained. I am only a high school student and I have a long time to learn.
My mother has never given up on me and I know the chances are slim, but I am not severely impaired with autism but mildly(high-functioning is what I mean by that. Nothing to do with relationships.) autistic. If you have different opinions than me, that is fine, but don't say that mine is wrong because then you'll be like MagicalHax09. He called all autistic people retards and yelled at him as if there were no tomorrow. Autism is my favorite learning subject and nothing will stop me.
Explain how I have a profound ignorance level. You have no proof that I do. If you think that I am ignorant than you are only making arrogant claims. I have read carefully between high-functioning autism and Asperger's Syndrome and I have set them to this:
HFA is higher-functioning autism while Asperger's Syndrome is a milder subgroup. However, social skills between the 2 differentiate from person to person.
In other words, I believe that AS is a form categorized under HFA.
in a bad day, i would say what you said was fighting words. but you also mentioned you are in high school, not trained, not educated, no direct involvement, no experience (yet), etc, so, that is enough to put the little flame. please continue with your education and help make a better world, thank you.

My 2 year old shudders and my 10 year old has overwhelming emotions during (partial complex) seizures. They're all different.
Rosalie, my 6 year old has autism too. She is NEVER so still as Hazel. She's never had an ABA therapist work with her for more than one hour a week (it doesn't do much good when it's so short So nice to see we mom's of autistic girls aren't alone!
