@mimicocoist He was a rock guitarist. As he describes it, he got a call one day from Karen and Richard while they were recording, and wanted him gto come to the studio to incluse some guitar tracks. This ultimately ended up as the guitar solo on the song Goodbye to Love, and was a trendsetter. Soon many love ballads would include a fuzz guitar solo in the middle of the song. This shows just how innovative Richard was in arranging their music.
I read that she was afraid to hit the drums too hard during this show b/c she didn't want to offend anyone. Haha! I don't see how they performed. I'd be a bucket of nerves. I can barely stand it when someone watches me make a sandwich, much less something like this.
@FlyingMondongo Yes Kissinger is a butcher...and his "companion" does look like a whore...and the old adage seems to be true...only the good die young...this SOB is still alive. We can hope for justice in the next world.
@aelialicinia The political stablishment used the Carpenters image to attack the counterculture movement. A&M Records had prohibited the Carpenters any political or controversial declaration.
I disagree. The President is the President, and any American should consider it an honor to be invited to the White House. I certainly would not turn it down . . . .
@Starlifter88 You're right. And even though Nixon was not a good President and a big lier I always thought that an invitation to play in the white house is some kind of an honor. The white house represents the United States, the corrupt citizens but also the good citizens which in a way the Carpeners represented. This is not Nixon house, this is the House where once Lincoln lived and he is part of our good history.
Great video footage, has to be one of the highlights of the Carpenters' storied careers being invited to the White House and to meet President Nixon and the other dignitaries. Liked it when Karen goes "yeehah" before and after the song.
Regarding the brush work, evidently Karen wanted to avoid being too loud. I think there's an interview posted somewhere where she talked about how it was a small area, and it seemed that the amps would be almost too much....
I think she said she barely "hit" the drums this night...she was nervous and didn't want to blow them out with the drum kit! :)

El carnicero Kissinger, visiblemente aburrido e impaciente, acude a la gala en compañía de una puta de lujo, igualmente aburrida, 6:37.

Ah, the whore is Mammie Van Doren.

Nixon tenía muy en cuenta a los jóvenes: los mandaba a la guerra. Lo que hizo con los Carpenters fue limpiarse el hocico.

Great publicity...but in the end this was a mistake because they became associated with Nixon and it damaged their career...

Is that a cast on Richard's left hand??

Yeah - Richard was in a motorcycle accident where he broke his wrist and a leg; the wrist took longer to heal...

I dont think Richard liked the " yee haa" at the beginning. LOL. Look at how he immediately gives Karen the take it easy look.

Lol..."YEE-HAW!" Karen was the lighthearted fun loving trickster. Richard, the over serious, formal, and stern lecturer.

Karen did that every time she sang this song; obviously, Richard approved of it.

Dang! Ever notice you never see pictures of Bob Hope and Tricky Dicky together? Think about it.
Even Henry Kissenger was there, although he looked bored out of his skull.
Very weird video. Nice brush work, Karen!
