Had to double post, too many questions haha --- I'm hoping after evacuating and charging I will have solved the previous leak. Does the vacuum pump take out all of the mineral oil or do I need to blow it out with a solvent? Am I risking a lot charging the system with the Wal-Mart bottles instead of having a shop do the initial fill? Thanks!
@benknefelkamp na, you can reuse the cond and valve. You don't have to worry about residual mineral oil, it hurts nothing, you just need to put pag oil back in. And I would use a scale and not bottles for accuracy, so pay a mechanic.
Scotty--- thanks for the great vids... I have a 1991 Ford Ranger 2.3 L4 with Factory Air. Its still R12, doesn't kick on when a/c button is pressed, so I figure there is no pressure & a leak somewhere (correct?) I am going to convert to r134-a so here's all what I'm replacing: the compressor (justin-case), suction line, liquid line, drier, orifice, valve core and caps (obv.), o-ring kit, compressor gasket. Is the thermal expansion valve necessary? What about the condenser? Any other thoughts?
My a/c wont cool unless im driving on the highway and the same with my heater i have a brand new radiator new fans new thermostat antifreeze is full and i replaced the pipes i dont know whats wrong and im ready to give up can you please help!
@MrMrsLeo many things can do that, but number one is bad cooling fans for the non working AC, as highway speeds you need no fans cause the air is already moving fast enough to cool the condenser. Of course, that would not be the heater case, the heater core being clogged would most likely cause that.
hey mr kilmer i have a problem with my a/c on my 02 rsx it only work whenever im going bout 45mph and up, if im goin any slower it just barely eases out and it typically will shoot warm air (i had new refrigerant put in it but it still does this) can you help me out with any ideas on how to fix it?
Do you usually charge the refrigerant as a vapor with the valve pointing up or as a liquid with the cylinder upside down?
I've read if you charge as a liquid and aren't careful to regulate the pressure coming from the charging cylinder to 45 PSI max with your manifold gauge valve you risk liquid refrigerant getting into the compressor which will hydrolock it.
Alright...my 2002 CIvic stopped blowing cold air when i was on the freeway...(I live in Phoenix Az). My engine mounts are so the engine shakes the car...but eversince the AC went out it doesnt shake that much as bad. I need my AC...its hot....
@HyperSTAND tons of things can cause that, from low refrigerant, a blocked up system, or a bad compressor . Start by checking the refrigerant level first. Scotty

@ceser75217 NEVER just guess and add refrigerant, always put AC gauges on first. No other way to start diagnosis correctly, pay a mechanic if you don't have the tools. Scotty
@LLLTTTCCC your vent system is stuck in defrost, so either you have a vacuum leak if your system is vacuum powered, or an electronic problem if you have electronically controlled vents. Scotty
@1684ba Not if you only do it a short time to watch it. Of course if it starts squealing, you take the wire off cause that means the system is really messed up. scotty
@scottykilmer Thank you Scotty very much, I did jumped the the two terminal on my honda civic 98 and the clutch didn't engage . I think the compressor field coil need replacement but I'm not sure.
hi scotty my air conditioner isn't blowing cold, the end of the compressor is not running like in minute 0:53. what do you think is causing the issue ? bad clutch ? what would stop a clutch from engaging ? low pressure or charge ??
@1684ba could be any of those and more problems too. try hot wiring it first to see if it will spin and blow cold, and work up from there if it doesn't work, checking refrigerant level first with a set of gauges. Scotty
My ford explorer releases the freeon instead of cold air(according to the mechanic) he says the AC evaporator could be messed up and that I have to replace it. Is this common or should I go see another mechanic? I know it's the freeon being released, because I got an allergic reaction to it.
@rediance he's probably right, but if you are worried, have it checked somewhere else with a sniffer Ac leak machine and it will beep when he puts it into the dash vents. Scotty
Oh ok thank you, and i was just wondering do you know anything about the 2000 volvo s40 having oil leaks? I had it taken to my mechanic and he couldnt find it.
I NEED HELP... i have a chrysler 300 yr 2005.. so the problem is that i dont know why the ac is not working well.. it does blows cool air from one vent and kind of fan ( hot) air on the other 3 vents.. the compresor seems to work fine... so i dont know whats wrong with it and a mecanic wants to charge me 600 dlls.... SO PLZ IF SOME ONES KNOWS WHAT IT IS .. CAN U PLZ TELL ME SO I CAN FIX IT THANXS ASAP...
@26HBIC those are fall apart cars as they age. Yours has an electronic AC problem, and you can't really work on it without a dealer level scan tool because it's all computerized. so you're stuck. that's modern high tech american engineering for you, unfortunately.,Scotty
hey scotty, you mention that you need to replace the air every once in a while....exactly how often is that? At the moment I have an 04' MG ZR which may need topping up...
@SiimpleHarry topping off is impossible in a modern car. You evacuate it all out, then put a factory load by weight back in. The exact weight is too critical to do anything else. scotty
All I can say is you are crazy going over the falls like that, and since I'm an idiot when it comes to cars and the A/C, I'll leave it to an expert to fix my 99 Windstar's issue with the rear A/C working but the front won't work unless rear is on high. I'm guessing it's low on refrig. since I haven't had it charged the 9 years I've owned it. The blend door is a big issue on Ford's, I had to have mine replaced last year during a recall, glad you said something about that. Keep up the good work
@stf2400 i really hope you realize he didn't go over the falls its highly illegal and im pretty sure he wouldnt want a big fine for it or to lose his life
Scotty my compressor starts for about 3 seconds and shuts back off. The system is FULL and i get low reading on the HI side, the low side sinks when the compressor starts and rises when it shuts back off.
@ipodtouchfan221 If you know nothing, pay a mechanic to change the expansion valve, it's a big job inside the dash that requires lots of experience and tools. Scotty
@ipodtouchfan221 Low pressure on the high side and short-cycling? It's NOT full. You should see AT LEAST 150 PSI on the high side gauge before the compressor cycles off. Scotty is wrong on this one; A restrcition will cause HIGH pressures. If you believe it's full because you can't get any more in from a little can, here's what you need to do: 1) Warm up the refrigerant cans in hot water first and 2) Charge it with the A/C running and the RPM's increased to fast idle (1,500 or so). It'll work.
hi scotty i have a vw golf 1994 i vacuum the ac system put freon was cold for like a week but no longer cools. it has pressure theirs no leaks .the compressor turns on but doesnt cool . any hints thank you
@pattymark1 Put on gauges and check the high and low pressure when it's running. Realize those pressures are dependant upon temp and humidity outside, so get a chart that shows proper pressures at those conditions. Scotty

hi scotty! i got to change my A/C compressor. do i need to replace other elements as well? (expansion valve, evaporator, etc) or just put the new compressor and is ok? tks!!!
hello scotty, can i ask you why my compressor is running but it doesn't blow any cold air and i have checked my refrigerant and still have.i hope you can help..tq
@wea619 you need to hook up gauges to the high and low sides and see what the pressures are. If they are normal, then the blend door could be broken inside the dash. if they are not normal, then the sytem must be worked on. Scotty
scotty, i have heard some mechs. say that when refrigerant is low that sometime the compressor stops working due to the refrigerand actually being a lubricant for the comp. i have in the past tried to fill my system, and due to the comp. not working. i have been told that it can be "jumped" at the battery long enough to get refrigerant into the system??? if there is truth to this, could you give me a heads up on the way to due this? my comp. is on the bottom of my vehicle. modern car 1998 tracer
@hydromorph1965 Yes, you can jump em by wiring power from the battery positivie terminal to the clutch power switch on the end of the compressor. Scotty
Hey Scott, i like your videos. Thank you for helping us, my 2004 nissan sentra still blows cold air but not as cold as my wifes car. My question to you is, when an ac has a leak the car does not blow any cold air at all right? So it is totally normal for a car to lose freon over time? Thanks, you are the man.
hey i have a 98 jeep cherokee. the air blew fine, but the a/c bearings were bad. so i had a new compressor unstalled at an a/c shop. next day saw that the valve had a leak and it was empty. had that and an o-ring fixed. now there is no leak. but no air is blowing at all. this all took place within 3 days. i also replaced the a/c relay because it was bad. it seemed to stop blowing anything either right when i replaced the relayor earlier that day. help?
hey scott!! well the issue in my 2001 dodge ram is that the compressor comes on for 2 seconds and goes of then it comes back on again and again! and no cold air in sight it actually feels warm!!
Scotty stick with the mechanical side of the car cause you know nothing about the recharging A/C.Call this video patching up A/C not fixing. You teach ppl how to recharge this way and I'm sure they will overcharge the system in no time and damage their compressor ,so good luck to those who follow your methods and next time you need a compressor will be " I told you so"
Almost 100 degrees here today again. Sweating my ass of in this car. Went to Autozone and they rent the same manifold guage set and vacuum pump with refundable deposit so you don't have to buy it for a one time use. I'll be doing this in the next couple of days.
Hopefully when I check the low pressure with the guage it's also empy so I too don't have to evac any old refrigerant and I can skip right to the vacuum pump step.
hey bro, i need help for my 2000 honda civic lx, my ac is not blowing cold air. i check the compressor its not working.... take note doesn't even have any belt in it. is this mean i need a belt for it.
@leogatcho first, put a new fan belt on it and turn it on. If it does nothing, hot wire the front of the compressor to see if it will at least turn. If it won't turn when hot wired, you need a new compressor at a minimum. Scotty
Hey Scott, I just bought a 2006 Chrysler sebring sedan 2.4L, The day i brought it home the A/C worked really good, but now 4 days later there is no cold air at all, why would that be, could it be a leak or just need refilling.
@mike95386 You probably got ripped off. Guys will fill the ac up right before selling them. If you have a leak, have it checked out with UV dye and hope like mad it's not inside the insanely expensive dash, as that costs a ton. But I see it ALL the time in Chryslers. Scotty
So green hose goes to low pressure fitting. Middle yellow hose is vacuum and refrigerant feed hose.
I assume you had the remaining red high pressure hose attached to the high port during this? What do you use the second white guage with red hose for during the process? I see you only looked the the low pressure guage and weight scale. My car still has R12 and has not been retrofitted. The same process applies?
@TranceScene Same process, and often I don't hook up the high pressure hose because they are SO cheaply made these days on modern cars that they often leak after you take the high valve off when you're done. Then you have to fix that crap on top of everything else and do the whole job all over. IF a vehicle has a pressure problem, then you have to hook up the red hose to read high pressure, but if it doesn't have a problem, I leave em alone. Scotty
My '85 Audi's refrigenrant is low. The low pressure switch has disabled (circuit open) the AC compressor clutch voltage feed as designed. So I temporarily fed the compressor clutch direct voltage which drove the compressor. Clutch was noisy. Still no cold air so I know it's definately low on refirgerant as switch detected.
What are your thoughts on the DIY recharge kits from the parts stores? Should they be avoided? It's been pretty damn hot lately here in southern CA. I need AC
@TranceScene It's best to evacuate the system out fully before adding the correct weight of refrigerant. Those DIY kits are just guesswork with actual weight, you can add some and hope you get close to the correct weight, but it's still guessing. Scotty
Hey man....I have a Nissan Xterra 2004....Its blowing hot air.It started about a month ago blowing air that wasnt so cold and evetually it went out....So i just bought some freon and Im trying to see how exactly to put it in....Can you please help me....God Bless...
hi you doin scotty i have a question i try to add refrigerant to mi wifes car is 94 thunderbird with one of those cheap kits they sale en the autozone as soon i start to add the frezzer the clutch start workin but i didnt feel any cold air inside when i notice the can was empty i unpluged the can from the hose but just like 5 second scape the freon and suddenly the clutch stop maybe i doint wrong can you give some advice
Hi Scotty, I've seen lots of videos on how to charge a/c system and the're all the same.Like just pump all the air out and refill to the specific psi. But what about adding a/c oil and how much before the refrigerant .Do you need to add oil everytime you charge the a/c or not.
@emanuelrivera30 Oil adding is prettymuch guesswork. You have no idea what's leaked out, or what's left in the system without taking the whole system apa Most guys will add one ounce of refrigerant for every 6 ounces of refrigerant just as a guess. Scotty
I started smelling something yesterday while I was on the freeway that smelt like melting plastic, looked under the hood but couldn't identify what it was. today i got in the car and turned on the ac, it worked for a few seconds and then stopped, now it doesn't blow any air at all.
hey scotty got a question i just replaced the compressor the accumulator and a hose from the evaparator to the condenser i vacumed the system and tried to put in new r-134a which i had to install the retro kit i dont even get one whole 12 oz can in and my gauge says its over charged but still no cold air can you help me with this?
@zippo2u You must have a restriction in the system, you should have flushed the system out, and changed the expansion valve (or orifice tube, depending up which vehicle you have) before putting it back together. Now you'll have to take it all apart and do this. Scotty Kilmer
Hey Scottykilmer, i have a problem with my car's air conditioner. My car's a/c is not blowing enough cold air even after recharging it with the refrigerants. I've tried putting 1 refrigerant in but thats when it wasnt cold enough then I've tried putting in another one but still not cold enough. I have followed the instructions in the video but still not enough cold air.It worked perfectly last summer. And should i make the guage go over 40?
I think my ac compressor is bad because as soon as i turn the ac on the car dies abruptly. if its a bad compressor will there be depris in the ac system? and will a simple evac and flush be enough to get it out?
@jojo4rmdabronx sometimes they blow debris when they go out, sometimes they don't. You'll never know. SO, it's always a good idea to flush the system out entirely and replace the accumulator or drier BEFORE putting the new compressor on. Also a good idea to replace the orifice valve or the expansion valve too. Scotty Kilmer
@SombraLocs could be many different things. Start by trying everything I show in this video. And you can hot wire the compressor to see if it at least turns or not. You may just be low on refrigerant, but it could be a much bigger problem. Start by checking the refrigerant first, or pay a mechanic to do that if you don't have any tools. Scotty Kilmer
@SombraLocs Starting and stopping compressors are either systems low on refrigerant, bad pressure switches, or an internal restriction inside the system. So you must check all three possibilities. Scotty Kilmer
wow! i love the pictures of Niagara falls. that car i have has been across buffalo NY to canada about 8 times now. did you go to canada or did you just go to the falls?
great video! my cars ac radiator had a hole in it though and the compressor locked up
@dnl5649 Went to both, I grew up in the falls on the american side, but went to university on the canadian side in Toronto. and my great great grandfather was a river man who took dead bodies out after they tumbled over the falls. Scotty Kilmer
@dnl5649 Well, some people just decide it's time to end it all (one guy did it the day I was hiking in the "devil's hole" on the American side.) A few fall in, and I suppose a few get pushed in. Scotty Kilmer
@scottykilmer does things like that happen everyday then? i might go to canada next year with my family. where can i buy one of those big tanks of freon? for about how much $ ?
@scottykilmer about how much refrigerant is in the average ac system? i know the little cans you can buy at auto stores is not nearly enough to fill a whole system. i'm guessing you would have to use maybe 6 or 7 cans to fill it up
@dnl5649 There is no such thing as the "average" AC system. All vehicles are different. Some newer models hold 14 ounces in the whole system, and some older ones hold four pounds. You need to look up yours in a data base and put the exact amount in, as I show in one of my scottykilmer's channel videos on youtube. Scotty Kilmer
@cadrizzay then it's either low on refrigerant (most common) or you have a restriction inside the Ac system, like a blocked orifice tube, OR the AC pressure switch is breaking down. Scotty Kilmer
Well done Sir! I am a complete idiot when it comes to cars... But a somewhat brilliant guy when it comes to understanding things! How did my air conditioning stopped working? Leaks? How can I know? How does air conditioning works? (step by step) What should I look for? Why does the part stop spinning when it doesn't work and what's its name?
@MrOlivierDavid The part that moves is called the compressor clutch, and if it stops moving the compressor is no longer pumping refrigerant. Ac works by a compressor compressing a gas into a liquid, which is hot. Then it goes through the condenser, which removes heat, then moves to the evaporator where it absorbs heat from the cabin and turns into a gas, where it's sucked back into the compressor and compressed into a liquid again. An endless cycle. Scotty
@seanseanseanseansean Hey, it's free, stop complaining. You want to hire a sound engineer for me? It's just like TV, they turn the volume up for commercials. It's to wake you up. Scotty
@sbaker3232 Hey, I grew up in Niagara Falls, beer cans are all they used to have back in the olden days. And I'm answering questions, so I must still be here. Scotty Kilmer
scotty my car dont blow cold air at all with the temp gauge at cold and the fan on max (no A/C) all i get it hot air does this mean my thirmoustat is not working?
Wait, back it up...It's normal for a system to leak refrigerant with its oil to lube the shaft?!
Laws are so strict on regulating refrigerants getting into the environment, maybe because theres already so much of it leaking out into the atmosphere and eating away the ozone layer! This blew my mind! Maybe it's not that bad..
@noxvet They have to leak Tiny amounts as I said, because if they didn't, the compressor seal would burn out on the shaft and it would all leak out. Now house AC is not like this, because they have hermostatically sealed compressors that are internal with no external shafts. The only thing going to a house ac compressor is electrical wires to power them. Scotty Kilmer
@Matthew55904 Get a flashlight and a mirror to see if the compressor clutch is spinning or not. Yea, some are really hidden but eventually you can see them. Scotty Kilmer
Okay so my car just blows air even after turned off the AC can you tell me what the problem is?

My ford explorer releases the freeon instead of cold air(according to the mechanic) he says the AC evaporator could be messed up and that I have to replace it. Is this common or should I go see another mechanic? I know it's the freeon being released, because I got an allergic reaction to it.

camshaftcarb 7 months ago
@ipodtouchfan221 Low pressure on the high side and short-cycling? It's NOT full. You should see AT LEAST 150 PSI on the high side gauge before the compressor cycles off. Scotty is wrong on this one; A restrcition will cause HIGH pressures. If you believe it's full because you can't get any more in from a little can, here's what you need to do: 1) Warm up the refrigerant cans in hot water first and 2) Charge it with the A/C running and the RPM's increased to fast idle (1,500 or so). It'll work.

Almost 100 degrees here today again. Sweating my ass of in this car. Went to Autozone and they rent the same manifold guage set and vacuum pump with refundable deposit so you don't have to buy it for a one time use. I'll be doing this in the next couple of days.
Hopefully when I check the low pressure with the guage it's also empy so I too don't have to evac any old refrigerant and I can skip right to the vacuum pump step.

leogatcho 1 year ago
@leogatcho first, put a new fan belt on it and turn it on. If it does nothing, hot wire the front of the compressor to see if it will at least turn. If it won't turn when hot wired, you need a new compressor at a minimum. Scotty

Hey Scott, I just bought a 2006 Chrysler sebring sedan 2.4L, The day i brought it home the A/C worked really good, but now 4 days later there is no cold air at all, why would that be, could it be a leak or just need refilling.
mike95386 1 year ago
@mike95386 You probably got ripped off. Guys will fill the ac up right before selling them. If you have a leak, have it checked out with UV dye and hope like mad it's not inside the insanely expensive dash, as that costs a ton. But I see it ALL the time in Chryslers. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
So green hose goes to low pressure fitting. Middle yellow hose is vacuum and refrigerant feed hose.
I assume you had the remaining red high pressure hose attached to the high port during this? What do you use the second white guage with red hose for during the process? I see you only looked the the low pressure guage and weight scale. My car still has R12 and has not been retrofitted. The same process applies?
TranceScene 1 year ago
@TranceScene Same process, and often I don't hook up the high pressure hose because they are SO cheaply made these days on modern cars that they often leak after you take the high valve off when you're done. Then you have to fix that crap on top of everything else and do the whole job all over. IF a vehicle has a pressure problem, then you have to hook up the red hose to read high pressure, but if it doesn't have a problem, I leave em alone. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
I need AC
TranceScene 1 year ago
@TranceScene It's best to evacuate the system out fully before adding the correct weight of refrigerant. Those DIY kits are just guesswork with actual weight, you can add some and hope you get close to the correct weight, but it's still guessing. Scotty

Hi Scotty, I've seen lots of videos on how to charge a/c system and the're all the same.Like just pump all the air out and refill to the specific psi. But what about adding a/c oil and how much before the refrigerant .Do you need to add oil everytime you charge the a/c or not.
emanuelrivera30 1 year ago
@emanuelrivera30 Oil adding is prettymuch guesswork. You have no idea what's leaked out, or what's left in the system without taking the whole system apa Most guys will add one ounce of refrigerant for every 6 ounces of refrigerant just as a guess. Scotty

zippo2u 1 year ago
@zippo2u You must have a restriction in the system, you should have flushed the system out, and changed the expansion valve (or orifice tube, depending up which vehicle you have) before putting it back together. Now you'll have to take it all apart and do this. Scotty Kilmer

I think my ac compressor is bad because as soon as i turn the ac on the car dies abruptly. if its a bad compressor will there be depris in the ac system? and will a simple evac and flush be enough to get it out?
jojo4rmdabronx 1 year ago
@jojo4rmdabronx sometimes they blow debris when they go out, sometimes they don't. You'll never know. SO, it's always a good idea to flush the system out entirely and replace the accumulator or drier BEFORE putting the new compressor on. Also a good idea to replace the orifice valve or the expansion valve too. Scotty Kilmer

The compressor on my 97 Cadillac Deville isn't working. What can be the problem? Do I need to buy a new compressor?
SombraLocs 1 year ago
@SombraLocs could be many different things. Start by trying everything I show in this video. And you can hot wire the compressor to see if it at least turns or not. You may just be low on refrigerant, but it could be a much bigger problem. Start by checking the refrigerant first, or pay a mechanic to do that if you don't have any tools. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer I just added refrigerant to my car, but I noticed that the compressor isn't turning. I noticed it starts, but then it stops.

@SombraLocs Starting and stopping compressors are either systems low on refrigerant, bad pressure switches, or an internal restriction inside the system. So you must check all three possibilities. Scotty Kilmer

scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer about how much refrigerant is in the average ac system? i know the little cans you can buy at auto stores is not nearly enough to fill a whole system. i'm guessing you would have to use maybe 6 or 7 cans to fill it up
dnl5649 1 year ago
@dnl5649 There is no such thing as the "average" AC system. All vehicles are different. Some newer models hold 14 ounces in the whole system, and some older ones hold four pounds. You need to look up yours in a data base and put the exact amount in, as I show in one of my scottykilmer's channel videos on youtube. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
What if your compressor spins for a few secs and stops...then repeats the process?
cadrizzay 1 year ago
@cadrizzay then it's either low on refrigerant (most common) or you have a restriction inside the Ac system, like a blocked orifice tube, OR the AC pressure switch is breaking down. Scotty Kilmer

Oli
MrOlivierDavid 1 year ago
@MrOlivierDavid The part that moves is called the compressor clutch, and if it stops moving the compressor is no longer pumping refrigerant. Ac works by a compressor compressing a gas into a liquid, which is hot. Then it goes through the condenser, which removes heat, then moves to the evaporator where it absorbs heat from the cabin and turns into a gas, where it's sucked back into the compressor and compressed into a liquid again. An endless cycle. Scotty

Matthew55904 1 year ago
Wait, back it up...It's normal for a system to leak refrigerant with its oil to lube the shaft?!
Laws are so strict on regulating refrigerants getting into the environment, maybe because theres already so much of it leaking out into the atmosphere and eating away the ozone layer! This blew my mind! Maybe it's not that bad..
noxvet 1 year ago
@noxvet They have to leak Tiny amounts as I said, because if they didn't, the compressor seal would burn out on the shaft and it would all leak out. Now house AC is not like this, because they have hermostatically sealed compressors that are internal with no external shafts. The only thing going to a house ac compressor is electrical wires to power them. Scotty Kilmer
