This song gives me gip. It comes from the same category as "all things bright and beautiful". Unless I am very much mistaken the person who the song is requesting thanks for is God. God controls everything and causes both good and bad things to happen (likewise he/she makes bright, beautiful, dull and ugly things). If we teach children to thank God for the good things, maybe they will blame him/her for the bad things. btw jet planes only rarely refuel in the air.

Love this - Have just been to the funeral of Estelle White, who composed this. She died on Feb 9th age 85 - I taught with her in the 70s -she wrote some brilliant hymns- 'Walk with me O my Lord' is one of my favourites

This was always my favourite hymn as well. I was rather shocked a number of years ago to read that it actually caused some controversy: Apparently the choir at one church threw down their hymn books in disgust and refused to sing it because of the "jet planes" line.
