absolute legend for putting this up!! arhhh just made me cry! amazing memories with old friends singing our little hearts out in assemblys!! haha!! love it!! thank-you!:*
This song gives me gip. It comes from the same category as "all things bright and beautiful". Unless I am very much mistaken the person who the song is requesting thanks for is God. God controls everything and causes both good and bad things to happen (likewise he/she makes bright, beautiful, dull and ugly things). If we teach children to thank God for the good things, maybe they will blame him/her for the bad things. btw jet planes only rarely refuel in the air.
when i was in primary school i used to hate singing these songs, now listening to this brings back so many fun memories, so nostalgic, tune is pretty catchy as well. ^^
OMG.... i remember this song and all the lyrics!!! we sung it ALL the time in my primary school. That memory is a loooooooooooooooooooong time ago. THANKYOU TO MY PRIMARY SCHOOL
Singing hymns was not something I enjoyed at school. This song was one of only two that I liked. We all used to shoot the line "And a win for my home team" when it came along.
as a teacher who plays piano, this song is one of the things I look forward to when we go back to school in September! i loved singing it at school and love to hear the children sing it now... i've heard some schools don't sing the verse with the 'bacon' term in it for religious reasons and others who have to explain to the kids what a milkman used to do and i always think Estelle wouldn't have minded if schools changed the odd line here and there to suit the times... never change the apple pie

i am in school but when we all sing this the football team always yelled and the win for my home team. lol but know we yell and the taste of apple pie!!
Oh my god! This was my favorite song to sing at primary school ( : that and "paintbox", which went "cauliflowers fluffy and cabbages green...". A classic school tune from my 90's childhood.
I had a bad time at school so have blocked those memories out my head but this was a popular song sung at Allens Rough Methodist Church in Willenhall near Wolverhampton where I held my first organist post and always enjoyed jazzing the organ up to this! Sadly that church closed in 2005.
I remeber singing this at school from nursery to year 6 lol prince avenue priamary school was the best and we used to shout WIN FOR OUR HOME TEAM lol :)
me and my friends have been trying to find this for years! it was one of the most memorable songs from hymns at primary, good bloody times, we sat singing it = cool girls ;)xxx
haha.... i was reminded of this a few days ago... all the guys and gals in one of my lessons in year 10 started singing it :) so we all joined in :D :D goood times

I can't believe i forgot this. We used to sing it all the time at infant and primary school. I remember we always used to shout the last lines of each verse even though the teachers told us not to do so :P
Love This Song!!! We used to always shout the last line of each verse and be told to shut up with our great out of tune voices- ahh they were the days!!! =D
Wow, I didn't recognise the title but as soon as it got to the line 'and the silk inside a chestnut shell' a wave of memories hit me. Boy, am I glad to be past all that!
We sang this in year 11 and we were so loud and energetic that the head of year tried to stop us singing the last verse. I can still here the music teacher on the piano banging out the keys and screaming "No! This is our favourite verse!"

ahhhh ive been looking for this song for forever i sang this at primary school and it was all the rage literally the assembly would go crazy for it oh the lols
Love this - Have just been to the funeral of Estelle White, who composed this. She died on Feb 9th age 85 - I taught with her in the 70s -she wrote some brilliant hymns- 'Walk with me O my Lord' is one of my favourites
@TheYorkslass1 Wow, I'm glad this touched you, and so sorry to hear that she died. I think the comments on this video are a testament to how many children's lives she touched through her music. I too love 'Walk with me O my Lord'.
I dident but all of the years 1 2 3 and 4 did xd it made me laugh so hard.I love the line:'The smell of bacon as i fasten up my laces and the song that the milkman sings'
@MrsStaffiesRock always thought this song had some really odd lyrics like the 'picked up engine' and jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled???? Always thought planes refuelled on the ground at the airports! LOL
Wow it's been 15 years since I heard this! Used to love singing this in primary school! Especially when the whole assembly would stop singing and shout "AND A WIN FOR MY HOME TEAM!" Hahaha

This was always my favourite hymn as well. I was rather shocked a number of years ago to read that it actually caused some controversy: Apparently the choir at one church threw down their hymn books in disgust and refused to sing it because of the "jet planes" line.
Google the Independent article, "Composer who drove choir to rebel defends her plane song".
I haven't sung this since I was at middle school, it shore brings back memorys of my childhood. I can hum it when I'm out in autumn time and it really cheers me up if I'm feeling down. I really do miss the good time's I had back then at school, its all good to remember
Bye Bye St marys!!!!!!!! ill miss you! When i was in the early weeks of year6 we did a harvest assembly and we sang this. I remember looking out at all the younger years and seeing everyone laugh, cheer, and smile at the point where it says A WIN FOR MY HOME TEAM!!!!!!!! memories........

It's great that the song is about such small, humble and simple pleasures (both natural and man-made), and that all the senses are involved (the touch of the shoes, the smell of the bacon, the taste of the apple pie, the sound of the milkman's songs, plus the sight of the moon, silk, jet planes etc etc).

I remember our teacher had a problem getting us to sing rather than shout 'thank you' but we loved it! Thanks for the memory

I remember sitting in assembly legs crossed arms folded and singing my heart out I always ran out of breath at the end of every verse lol
Ahh the memories.
My daughter's 5 months old I hope they still sing this song when she's at primary school.

I haven't sung this since I was at middle school, it shore brings back memorys of my childhood. I can hum it when I'm out in autumn time and it really cheers me up if I'm feeling down. I really do miss the good time's I had back then at school, its all good to remember
