These days they wouldn't even be in the same room, much less a mike away from each other: Rubin would be on by satellite from effing Jupiter, & Pyne would be in a bunker purchased for Bill O'Reilly by Sandusky & Fine Associates, 'cause your right to free speech @$10 million a year shall not be infringed.
You have to understand that the mainstream media in those days (like today) was embracing the left, making liberalism seem sane and conservatism seem unreasonable. It had started in 1964 with the bashing of Barry Goldwater. Pyne was one of those who was going to fight back and bash the liberals with both fists. He took no prisoners. There really was no other conservative media alternative in those days.
I like Pyne- but Rubin was justified in walking out. Pyne was not engaging in a two way conversation- see how he cowardly grandstands rather than address the issue of citizens blindly following Nazi law. Any interviewer who resorts to that kind of evasiveness is cheating the viewing audience.
@moffat691 - If the interviewer asks a question and the interviewee instead of answering it skips around the subject and/or starts some long winded soap box Speech that is meant to cloud the issue at hand it is the interviewers job to cut the interviewee off and get back to the stated question. Otherwise he or she is really cheating the audience. If You theoretically came on My show(which I do not have) and I asked You specific questions I would expect answers not hedges...
@Texaskingfish First of all. I really like Joe Pyne- but Pyne ducked Rubin's question to him- do you blindly obey all nation's laws, particularly an immoral one, such as the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany- or the persecution of American Blacks back in the 60s- codified into law by those in power.
@moffat691 - Respectfully, Because You answered me respectfully which I find little of on Youtube posts for some reason. My answer to you would be, who is interviewing who? Joe asked a question, Jerry tried to sidestep by using the old tactic of answering a question with a question. Joe did not go for it and Jerry realized that if he allowed the interview to continue he would be pressed for a real answer.
@Texaskingfish - Pyne did not ask a question. He was scolded Rubin for breaking laws instead of trying to change the law thru the establishment. Rubin then asked Pyne if he would have followed the laws of Nazi Germany. He was making a strong point in the form of a question- nothing wrong with that. Pyne could not respond to that question w/o agreeing with Rubin. Now he could have said- "YOU EQUATE AMERICA WITH NAZI GERMANY??? EAT RAZOR BLADES!!!- that would at least keep the discussion going.

If it were me in Jerry Rubin's place, I would have wound up in jail. It would have been impossible NOT to strangle this asshole Pyne - my fingers are twitching towards the computer screen even now....WHAT A DILDO!!!!!
Back then, I only listened to Rubin and Hoffman because it pissed my parents off. But kids today just don't seem to have the same kind of focus against what's wrong in the world, they don't question authority - we could use Abby and Jerry right about now...
What really gets under my skin, is the fact that Joe Pyne interrupts Jerry Rubin the entire time. People can disagree, but he was such an ass about it. I mean regardless of whether you do not like what he's saying Jerry Rubin should have at least gotten a chance to say what he wanted before Joe Pyne counter argued.
JOE PYNE WAS THE CREATOR AND GOD FATHER OF CONFRONTATIONAL TALK RADIO...MOST OF THE CLOWNS TODAY SUCH AS LIMBAUGH, HANNITY, LEVIN, ETC. DON'T EVEN REMOTELY GRASP PYNE'S ROLE IN MODERN MEDIA HISTORY, PRETTY MUCH EVERY PHONE ARGUMENT AND RANT THAT ANY OF THESE CLOWNS HAVE DONE CAN BE TRACED BACK TO JOE PYNE....JOE WAS THE MAN AND THEY SHOULD ALL PAY HIS ESTATE ROYALTIES FOR INVENTING MODERN CONFRONTATIONAL TALK RADIO, SADLY HE DIED IN HIS EARLY 40S LEAVING A LEGACY THAT CHANGED MEDIA FOREVER.
It's funny that he actually got the better of Jerry Rubin, who accuses him of running a "circus"...I thought that's what Jerry Rubin always tried to do.
i remember mr pyne during the 1965 watts riots pull a gun out from his desk and bssically remarked he had a suprise for anyone whom he saw as a threat.i believe he was an exmarine ww2 vet. i was 15 at the time and watched his show all the time.
Obviously Rubin hadn't really hit the drugs too hard at this stage as he's not ranting like a mad man. Watch the "YIPPIES FOR NIXON" video to see him acting like a complete dick on tv.
@DeluxeReissue Wow, I was just about to make the same point before seeing your comment. Yes, what an amazing contrast.
The other interesting contrast is between Joe Pyne of 1967 and the Bill O'Reilly's and Sean Hannity's of today. By today's standards, Pyne was being genteel, and certainly soft-spoken, although obviously very opinionated. It might have been understandable back then, but if any public figure were to walk out on that kind of an interview today, he'd be considered a real wuss.
@TroyOi Why do you think they would be considered a "real wuss" for walking out now and not a wuss for doing it back then? What allegedly changed perceptions and opinions of that according to you and why?
@unfortunatebeam Just because with the nature of TV as it is today, any left-wing activist like Jerry Rubin coming on a show like Hannity's or O'Reilley's would do so with the expectation of rough treatment. Although Pyne was doing a bit of ranting and raving, he did allow his guests to have their say, more so than I think you could expect today, with the way the conservative hosts tend towards rapid-fire interruptions whenever their adversarial guests have a point to make.
2012. Calmly, quietly and in an orderly fashion, the government is replaced. It was taken from us violently in 1963, and the solution lies in reversing that process. I do it in my daily life, and it works. Restraint and determination, that's all it takes.
@carmine0528 I agree Carmine. It's time for a revolution in the U.S. that will usher in protection of our Borders, Language, and Culture. Vive Michael Savage!
Not necessarily a Jerry Rubin or Joe Pine fan, but they're both fascinating. But it's worth knowing that John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Alexander Hamilton were in violation of the law of the land and were traitors to their country--England. Just sayin'.
Larry King,Chris Matthews,Keith Olbermann,Jerry Springer,Rachel Maddow,David Susskind,Donnie Deutsch,Bob Scheiffer,George Stephanopolous,Dick Cavett, Charlie Rose,Barbara Walters,PHIL DONOHUE,etc,etc,etc, ALL WORSE than you could ever accuse {yne of having been, or Limbaugh of being today.
Wow Pyne is a huge dick, I mean I understand how people could disagree with Rubin, even though I agree with him very much. But this interview just shows, in my opinion, how much opposition is showed towards any sort of new school of thought or theory. My generation will soon be the ruling generation of this country, and we will have to face social/political/economic issues with a new method and I am confident that we will encounter much heat like Rubin did here.
When Pyne's show was on the air, I never failed to be amazed at how he got away with what he did at the time. Nothing has changed in that respect after more than 40 years.
