@KarrieSmith There is no "Maria." She's a composite of many women Adam has known or wanted to know. The woman he's kissing looks a lot like the woman in the yellow hat pictures. That gal is names "Amelia" if my memory serves, and she (and the picture w/ the yellow hat) inspired the song "Hard Candy" from the album of the same name. They've been broken up for years I'm pretty sure.

This song must have been written for me !!!  Hell, it is scary making a decision to be with someone for the rest of your life. I wasted away my 20's & 30's having fun & trying to discover what I wanted in life. Now I'm in my mid 40's & the world has passed me by. But I don't have any regrets because I know I didn't find the right woman anyway.

One of my fav Songs of all time. I don't know if this songs is literally about Adam or another member or the band. It's obviously about having regets, Not meeting the right person, Not having a family, Being the akward single person around and loosing common ground with friends. But grabbing onto a romantic idea of meeting the right person in the future.

It's a wonderful sad song.

Yea, I feel that claudis192. I was engaged but now it all slipped through my fingers. I'm single and have been for 2 years. I'm 27. My friends are all married and gone and when you want to hang with them your like an inconvenience. I feel adam on this song. This song is my medicine, lol.

@claudis192 well said. This song brings the tears and a lump to the throat. No other group writes so well together. All the musicians bring the emotions of Adam's writing to such sublime expression. From the haunting, yearning guitars (eg: intro to the bridge), to the delicate piano work (eg: "to go out walking in the sun"), this song is a masterpiece. Think their music will stand the test of time very well in yrs to come, and theband will be even more appreciated in future then currently.

Most of that paragraph is how I feel, what I think about, almost daily - esp when I see couples in love on TV & Movies. but Im divorced, have kids but still feel like I havent met rite person yet.

The Counting Crows couldn't possibly create something that makes me turn away. This is truly one of their best, but it really shows how fantastic they are in every other song, too.

@lindwaine i couldnt have said it better if i tried, music is all about atmoshere, where the music and ur soul, being or whatever bcome made of the same substance that fills the area around u and u just let go and drift into it through it and become a part of it. and the counting crows are the only band so far that ive found where 99% of their stuff takes me some place.
