I love this film, its one of the best and most underrated of the decade. Doubly ironic since I couldnt stand Hogan's Heroes, but Kinnear and Dafoe are absolutely brilliant in Auto Focus, and its one of Paul Schrader's alltime greatest!
John Carpenter was innocent. Read up on the case. The police couldn't solve it so they found the easiest suspect, namely Bob's best friend. He was also a Native American banging white chicks with Bob so that was another reason to tie him to this.
Carpenter was completely cooperative the cops, even waived his Miranda rights and offered to give a lie detector test, which the cops turned down. The "rare blood type" the cops "found" in his rental car 21 days after the murder was Type B, which around 25 million people in the States had at that time or 10% of the population.
To somehow link this shoddy "evidence" to having killed his best friend is fucking weak. When they did try to try Carpenter 14 years later, the sole "new" evidence was a photo that they couldn't conclusively name who had taken, that supposed showed a piece of "brain tissue" that was 1/16 inches, that they "forgot" about 14 years prior.
However, several cops testified they never saw the tissue including one who went over the entire car with a magnifying glass, and of course, the cops didn't actually have this "brain tissue" evidence and even the photo negatives were lost! More to the point, several independent forensics experts testified that "speck" on the photo could not be identified.
Also, in the set of photos, the ruler on the "speck" photo was different from the ruler on all the other photos. There is a good reason Carpenter was acquitted, he was INNOCENT!
By the way. Scientists want to take a blood sample of Abe Lincoln from an old pillow case after he was shot, to see if he might have had cancer before he was killed. (Because its not like we need to find cures for aids, or cancer anyway). But I bet you that they can get DNA from that old ass piece of blood. But they cant solve Crane's case? Did Crane's DNA jump out of the blood in that dudes car or something? And Abe's DNA is still in that pillow case? Give me a fuckin break.

One of the most depressing movies ever! Greg Kinnear, however, did a great job. Even though he didn't remind me of Bob Crane, anyone watching the movie would know who Kinnear was supposed to be. I guess we all have our dark sides, don't we? I would imagine that most of us keep them well-hidden in the dark side of our souls where no one (except ourselves) ever goes.
I think this movie (unintentionally on the part of the writers) had an anti-pornography stance. But Bob Crane wasn't lured away from his family and the church by Carpenter or by porn. Crane had been making porn movie for years before he and Carpenter met.
Recommended movie. Willem Dafoe was excellent as John Carpenter & Kinnear did as well as Dafoe in his Crane character.
Nice character arc for both main roles. I think Crane was what he was. Everyone has many aspects to them. In his case, his private interests became not so private, that's the only diff between him & many others....he wasn't worse or better, he simply exposed more of his private life than he probably should have. Takes nothing away from him IMO.
Greg Kinnear did a great job in this excellent, but dark, film. There is a sleazy, dark, and almost humorous tone throughout the movie. This movie was sorely overlooked as the acting, direction and writing were superior to a lot of the junk that was out there in 2002.
