sorry, I know this might sound naive but I'm from the UK so I know squat about ice hockey. Why are the players allowed to fight like this all the time? If this happened in a "soccer" game both players would be off the pitch and have at least a three match ban. Are fights allowed in basketball or American football? I only ask as I don't get it.

hockey is the only sport that fighting is tolerated to the extent that you can do it without repurcussions. it's just how the sport is. however, in our American version of football and basketball, you can't fight without serious consequences.

actually, there's some rule about fighting in 2 or 3 games in a row or somethin' like that and you get suspended. That and if you are blatantly starting fights.

the fact that you call it 'ice' hockey is indicative of your lack of knowledge, as if people watch grass hockey in north america. and ya, the fighting has been part of the sport since it's birth over a hundred years ago because it conjures such a passion when you play it. best sport in the world

because if the refs don't let fights go on and allow players to let off steam the players might resort to dirty hits or something else that could cause a lot more injury than a punch in the head could cause.
