  • Oh how music has gone downhill since the days of this kind of thing. Superb track, brilliant video.

I hope the younger generations continue to find quality of this kind and realise how shit things are now. Maybe then the quality will improve again.

  • Cant get this on iTunes yet...which sucks!!

  • wow!!! after 20 years... thanks!

  • this is the best music can get, 1986 /87 remember it forever

  • Everytime I feel at my lowest... This and a few others keeps me believing.

The smallest seed of faith is better than the largest fruit of happiness. ~ Henry David Thoreau

  • notice they have their eys are closed? they are dreaming anyway. suits the title. dreaming of success

  • a very pleasant song, much cooler and awesomer than today's music, live on classics!!

  • Nice to see that so many people like this song. I am a big fan of the guys. Sadly (for us) the singer has left the band in november 2011. After 31 years. They always wrote everything themselves except the english lyrics. They made many many beautiful songs. They are the best. Thanks for posting the clip. Greetings from Holland.

  • I love this. It inspires emotion immediately.

  • I thought this was an Electric Light Orchestra song when it first came out, don't half sound like them with all those classical instuments and big sound.

  • Does anyone else remember the rumours about this lot being the Beatles in disguise?

  • @supernffc Did people really say that?

  • @jemmabond Yes there were strong rumours that the Beatles had recorded this song in secret. It has got a very beatle-ish feel to it after all

  • @supernffc I can see why people would say that it sounds like The Beatles - the lead sounds a tad like Sir Macca - but for years I seriously thought that it was Queen, but with Brian May on lead vocals.

  • @jemmabond It was something to do with the star club in hamburg being on the Grosse Freiheit (apparently)

  • This song doesnt appear to be on Itunes.

  • @1FineYoungCannibal Apparently, this song IS on itunes, but they are listed as Freiheit.

  • One of the most incredible videos I have seen on here, and what a song.. Brilliant, thank you!

  • couldnt sound anymore like paul mccartney even if you tried

  • @mrjoew8 I thought that too.

  • Reminds me of "All Through The Night"

  • Incomparable! Please get togethersoon and do us something more with which to 'Keep the Dream Alive' - love this wonderful song so much. Thank you for sharing, Freiheit!

  • They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Ah.. Nostalgia

  • Mark ronson brought me here!

  • why does everybody associate this song with Christmas...It is one of the best songs ever produced...and should be played a lot more. It has feeling and character and great lyrics which you can actually here...very dramatic. Heard this song for the first time today on Mansfield 103.2 and I ultimatley thought wow...who sings this peice of brilliance.

  • @PhilM70 No Phil, this is a song for a Brand New Year! Everytime I hear this, brings tears in my eyes (of joy). Maybe (Münchener) Freiheit should reproduce this incredible song im Deutch...This is really a amazing song!!

  • wow. i didn't realise charlie sheen could sing like paul mcCartney

  • I always thought this was e.l.o.

  • This song really moves me every time I hear it and I'm a soul man.First time I've seen this video,I think it's excellent and I agree about the 'deserves a fucking million views' but I would never say fucking in a comment on YouTube...definitely fucking not..fuck that for a game of soldiers.

  • One of the most beautiful songs and performances ever...........

  • What an incredible piece of music. Nothing more to be said.

  • Close your eyes, this guy sounds like McCartney.

  • My favourite christmas song that doesn't mention christmas

  • This occasionally appears on Christmas CD compilations in the UK. I agree. I couldn't imagine listening to it at any other time.

  • wow. people say oasis sound like the beatles.

  • Fantastic song. So glad I found this. Brings back memories. Emotional. Powerful song. It does sound like a McCartney song! Thanks for posting this classic!! ;)

  • @1860george

Similar to what I was saying yesterday. What the hell happened to music?

  • Sounds very much like a Macca tune circa 1983!

Germany's greatest pop song? It's a toe to toe with 99 Red Balloons!

  • @grandeschnezzer You're thinking "Pipes of Peace", no?

  • i've been looking for this song for the past 15 minutes or so. it was on the radio and my dad said it was paul mccartney but its not!! i had said 'i love this song!!' i had to sing the chorus in my head to try think of a possible name for the song !!!

  • " Beat me up , Cut me down ,

,Still , I will never, ever frown ,

All I need , when my dreams bleed ,

Is just to feel , This wonderous steal,

From Heaven's Door , cant ask for more !

    LOVELY HEALING SWEETNESS.

    David Byrne. ©davidbyrne2010.

  • I only ever here this song once in a blue moon at Christmas on the radio...seriously should get A LOT more radio play me thinks!! :)

  • Does anyone else think he sings "...and while the bastard's calling" at .43?

  • @1982cherrydrops - it is available on iTunes in the UK - the band is listed as Freiheit.

  • I've been listening to this song (way more than is healthy). I have come to the conclusion that the cellos add the epic and the brass add the splendour. A great use classical instrumentation in a modern popular form.

  • I love this sooo much! It reminds me of being young and carefree! WHY is it not available on iTunes :-( x

  • Basically sounds like E.L.O. with Paul McCartney on vocals. None the worse for it.

  • @Ainocorrida81 It sounds nothing like ELO - the drumming is better for one thing!

Any pop song with an orchestral accompaniment seems to draw the ELO/Beatles/Wings comparison, but you could just as easily compare it to some of the production David Foster did for (say) EW&F and Chicago - the triplet run out of the bridge at 2:30 is a direct lift from Chicago's "Hard habit to break".

  • @pomoeeyore I utterly ceed to your clearly superior musical knowledge. I wish you all the best for a very happy 2012.

  • @pomoeeyore It sounds nothing like ELO and the drumming is better?

I take it you are deaf. And as for the drumming I'm sure Bev Bevan could do this rhythm with his big toe.In fact anyone could do this after a 10 minute drum lesson.Songs like this don't need Louis Bellson fills.

  • I bought this single back in the 1980's. I've always loved it.... mixture of Christmas and football......

  • A much underplayed song for sure

  • Heard this song this morning at work, Loooooooong time since I heard it last, absolutely love it, but if you think about it, by listening to this one we have all lost the game around 1:05 is the first time and theres a couple more besides ;-)

But anyhoo, thanks for uploading this, lovely song!

  • made me think immediately,ELO,but backing band and was not there.......nor was Jeff Lynn..??...good copy, also your video ideas have been reworked! Try the Proclaimers!!??,but music has to come around again..look at Olly Murs,it works...In the right environment!

  • love it, it was on my radio station this morning called 97.4rockfm i was like I LOVE THIS SONG! x

  • The greatest video EVER!!! and a truly wonderful performance. Where did they learn to sing in English without any hint of a German accent??

  • @MultiGeraghty It isn't uncommon for non-native English speakers to loose their natural accents when singing pop music. If you watch European versions of shows such as X Factor - particularly the Dutch version - they don't sing with an accent at all. And of course, some of us Brits sound a tad American when we sing pop songs.

I'm not sure if that's the greatest video ever, though, because it gives me nightmares...don't ask why!

  • ELO meets Eurovision meets Christmas

  • Why has McCartney done this?

  • @MrCRM114 What do you mean? It was Munchener Freiheit who originally done this song.

  • wow , 14 years since i heard this .keeping the dream alive , what a message!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Still as good as the first time I heard it

  • I love this song with all my heart, but the video frightens the living hell out of me...all those body-less hands playing those instruments!

  • @jemmabond Well it was the 80's we had new tech, everyone was like; FOMG! BLUESCREEEEEN!

If you take a look at a fair few of the music vids of the time, yeah, the tech boys were having FUN!

Sorry for the creep show, boys with toys.....You know how it is. We do it because we can, not because we should...... :D

  • Amazing!!! Not a trace of a Bavarian accent!!!

  • Aweswome Xmas tune...& yeah..sounds like McCartney!! :-)

  • can't wait for Katie Melua's version of this song!

  • Love this track.

  • You can find the english version on i-tunes on Haynes Ultimate Guide To The 80s

  • Very romantic and dreamy... great when you are in love, especially at Christmas time! Marvellous!

  • True, it sounds like Mc Cartney in the 80s, The Frog Song etc!

  • WHY CAN'Y I GET THIS SONG ON I-TUNES?!?

  • until a couple of weeks ago i could watch this vid on my iphone . now it says that this vid cannot be played on iphone. please fix . thank you

  • Pure german classical! 207 557

  • This video deserves a fucking billion views....

  • My favourite German group.Too bad they didnt have more hit songs in the UK. I had 2 of their albums on vinyl,1 in German, they were great.

  • Is that Mel Gibson on the drums?

  • This is one of my favorite tracks of that band ;)

  • I always thought the beegees sang this

  • E. L. O.

  • Like this song very much and thanks for posting it. By the way, if you want a similar vocal sound, try Mike Batt (not a million miles away in style, either).

  • lyrics

  • guilty pleasure,love it!!!!

  • ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL SONG AND VIDEO AND FANTASTIC ALBUM, "FANTASY", FROM THIS GERMAN BAND OF 80'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I always thought that it was Paul McCartney who sang this.

  • @paduapete1 Funny that, I always thought it was The Beatles, because I could and still can hear Paul McCartneys voice.

Ironic thing is that if it was Paul McCartney's song it would have been massive, funny what a name does to a song.

  • Totally marvellous. Haven''t heard this for years and suddendly thought I wonder if Utube has it. Super wonderful great marvellous. Thank you so so much. My day is complete!!!!

  • Many people thought they sounded like Paul McCartney / Wings when this came out, me included.

It sounds just as good in the german version

  • I just had a moment of awe...Heard this song years ago, (on the B-side 45 RPM single I used to have) but would it be in the charts today it would still have many fans. Just amazing! After all these years, i'm still impressed by the music and the vocals/harmony, timeless!

  • The Best song..

  • Yes, it sounds very much like Paul McCartney - and the harmonies very Beatles-like - still an excellent pop song.!

  • Yes, it sounds very much like Paul McCartney - and the harmonies very Beatles-like - but it's still an excellent pop song.!

  • Is this song about memories of the Beatles?

  • This song is one of the best songs at Old Trafford these days. Fantastic stuff. Manchester United, Keeping the dream alive, good luck lads, wrap up the premiership ASAP & then take on mighty Barcelona. BECAUSE WE'RE KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE!

  • you'll be able to find this on the sound track of "say anything" with john cusack very good sound track.

  • Brilliant song, but why oh why do some people always think this is a Christmas song..in UK..odd?

  • Truly inspirational!!!!! :D Never fails to bring tat strange n happy uplifting feeling deep down :)))))

  • Great! Been looking for this song for such a long time!! Had difficulty partly beacus he sounds so much like the lead for the Beatles!

  • @TheIdentCritic Thats fantastic. It is such a difficult song to find. I am struggling to find any compilation with it on too. The only way I can listen to it is if I play it on YouTube while in the house. Do you have an email address?

  • @Jen171079 It's a classic and perfection.

  • @thatsthewayitgoes09 Stange how you can listen to music yet you claim you're deaf. Good one.

  • @Jen171079 Just download ''youtube'' downloader and then convert the file into mp3.

  • @stuartfleming I managed to download and convert this quite easily. Thank you for your help!

  • I love this song. It brings back so many memories from my childhood. Does anyone have a copy of this song as an MP3 that they can send to me? I will provide a CD. I cannot find it anywhere and the version on itunes is in German.

  • @Jen171079 The English versions of this album and the other two have been recently released as part of a three-in-one, available at Amazon. (It won't let me post a URL here, but go to amazon.com and search "munchener freiheit 3in1 vol. 4."

  • Simply beautiful....

  • beautiful song!

    thanks for uploading

  • This always reminded me of E.L.O. So similar!

  • @yorkie6687 yes! the melody and the arranging is good, beatles like

  • @yorkie6687 It is very ELO'ish. That's a great compliment. Its magic.

  • Have a look at American Idol this song being performed by a group of teenaged students (I think) Really good. A truly wonderful song!

  • The first place I heard this song was on the old Sky Radio. Brilliant tune.

  • Wish you could get this on iTunes .... brilliant :)

  • Love it happy memories.

  • One of those songs that hits your sentiment with a bullseye: tremendous.

  • To use that silly American phrase... "Totally awesome

  • What a brilliant tune and video.

  • @blueroomexit Ha! They do sound like a cross between Paul McCartney and ELO. Lovely song

  • they played this op my grandpa´s funerall i always cry when i hear this

  • @tauralia what a song it always brings back happy memories my last year before i moved out from home. u cry away babes coz the game will never be over xxx

  • This sing always takes me back to a special Xmas. What a song !! perfect!!!

  • One of my fave songs of all time- perfect!

  • @blueroomexit i DIDN'T KNOW WHO IT WAS BUT LOVED IT. I love them at Eurovision 1993.

  • One small caveat on my earlier statement: If you like this song I would recommend checking out the German original as they get a better harmony and don't hum the last line Münchner Freiheit "Solang' man Träume noch leben kann - live

  • I like this song not only because of the relationship connotation. It has much to say regarding the unassailable nature of the human spirit . It has a "no, the line is drawn here!" sense to it, that transcends words. (in that wonderful way song has of being the picture that paints 1000 words). It inspires hope and dogged determination at the same time. A rare, rare thing in an age of throw away ballads. Truly one in a million.

  • @clymangus Hello . I really love these sentiments expressed so eloquently here. You have encapsulated the spirit of the beauty in the song . The refrain " The dream will never be over " expresses the hopeless , yet irresistable wonder of love ; even love which is battered beyond redemption. You really have to hang on to your dreams ; tho' they be battered and bruised .... david byrne

  • @daisyb333 Seconded.

Part of the reason it's meaningful to me is that it peaked in the UK charts in early 1989. Ten months later millions of East Germans (who had been keeping the dream alive) finally got freedom - or in German, Freiheit.

It just captures the moment - same as the Scorpions did with Wind of Change two years later.

  • Quite possibly my all-time favourite song

  • looks like 5 folks aren't keepin the dream alive

  • listen to the chorus then listen to the chorus of All Thru The Night by Cyndi Lauper...pretty similar?

  • @woodster1965 You are right haha. The lyrics are not the same however. Alot of the music today is just a copy off the older stuff. Usually it doesnt even say "cover" on it. For example: "Africa" by Karl Wolf the chorus is a direct copy off of Toto's origional version. As well as the song "Rich Girl". Down with webster actually uses a part of Hall and Oats origional version. I think it is bullshit..

  • Always reduces me and my dad to tears or at least me to goose bumps! - what an amazing song. Goes with the Flying Pickets, and Spread a Little Happiness, Peter Skellern - You're a lady In the songs my daddy loves. All have very special memories for me. FANTASTIC!

  • Always reduces me and my dad to tears - what an amazing song. Goes with the Flying Pickets, and Spread a Little Happiness, Peter Skellern - You're a lady In the songs my daddy loves. All have very special memories for me. FANTASTIC!

  • This would be an amazing football song

  • I think its a shame that this is classed as a Christmas song. It only entered the UK charts in early December, so its as much a Christmas song as an X-factor but so so much better! Should have had so much more air-play on radio

  • Didn't know Dylan Moran was a pop singer....(jk) :-P :D

This tune rocks. It's my favourite Xmassy tune! It should be played more often.

  • I echo all the 'childhood', 'been looking for this for years' comments - when are we going to see a modern release, perhaps speeded up? My Mum first introduced this to me, probably 15 years ago, and to this day I remember the chorus. Ace. Love you, Mum. x

  • Been looking for this for years..... Love it to bits !!!!

  • wow wow wow ive finally found it wip-d-wee-waah!!!!!!!!been searchin 4 ags:):)::):)

  • 5 people don't want to keep the dream alive :(

  • I do love this song - shame they only play it on the radio at christmas time

  • why did ngamer post a link to this?

  • this song is sooo fkin awesome takes me back to my childhood11/10 I love it

  • Like the guy here who tohught they wer Paul mcCartney and Wings - for years I was sure they were ELO...

  • @nirsul I agree, you'd swear it was Jeff Lynne from ELO on the vocals.

  • Stupid me, always thought this was Sir Paul M and the Wings, this Is what happens If you dont do your research lol.

This song has many reasons to like It, "many high 5s" to marginline for the quality vid!.

  • Great song, but can't stop thinking of pipes of peace!

  • Is it just ne? Or does he really sound like Paul McCartney?

  • @MrLittlelionman

the first 10 times i heard it i was convinced it was paul mccartney

  • @MrLittlelionman You arent the only one. I first thought this was the whinging Scouser & Wings...

  • @MrLittlelionman The entire vocals sound like a "Wings"/ ELO production. Yep, he DOES sound like Macca!!

  • @MultiGeraghty Cheers bud, Knew i weren't the only one!

  • @MultiGeraghty That's exactly what I thought! :D

  • @MrLittlelionman He definitely does ;)

  • @MrLittlelionman I used to think it was Macca i love this song

  • @MrLittlelionman You're right......They do sound alike!

  • @MrLittlelionman

I always thought it was Paul McCartney!!!

  • @MrLittlelionman I agree!

  • @MrLittlelionman He looks like George Harrison

  • I find this song spiritually uplifting: The pain of separation combined with the belief that love never dies - and will return one day in a different life or dimension. Perhaps this is why it's so popular at Christmas, and has become an "honourary" Christmas song.

  • awesome song, reminds me of Mc Cartney :-)

  • Oh by the way, the song was written by two band members Aron Strobel and Stefan Zauner lyrics by Tim Touchton and Curtis Briggs. It was the first track on and album by the band called 'Fantasy'. I am sure that Sir Paul McCartney or any other leading songwriter would love to have written this song.......pleased you like it by the way.
