Former heavyweight champion Michael Dokes was sent to prison Monday for a night of terror in which he beat and sexually assaulted his live-in girlfriend in 1998.
A tearful Dokes, 41, apologized for his actions, but it wasn't enough to prevent a Las Vegas judge from giving him up to 10 years in prison for an attack that left the victim's face so beaten that an arresting officer said he couldn't recognize her from a driver's license photo.
Dokes was a good figher, I think his main faults were the cocaine, and he had a reach like a T-Rex. He tried to box guys but he ended up slugging with them because his arms were just too short.
@gandil408 Fans of the 70's era don't give the 80's enough credit for the talent look at Dokes if it weren't for Coke he could have been great off of merit his talent alone puts him against anyone, Holmes, Page, Thomas, Weaver, Tubbs, Coetzee, Witherspoon the 80's was a good era for heavies too bad the matchups that should of happened didn't.
My stepdad was one of his corner men and still remains friends with him to this day. He's out of jail now and he's trying to get a holyfield vs. dokes match going. LoL straight rocky six type shit. Dokes really couldve been great but to bad the drugs got to him. You can definitely tell the drugs took its toll.
Is that michael Dokes? The very same Mivhael dokes who was defeated by coetzee onnly two years later? so determined and quick? so talented? If he had fought Coetzee like this he would have stopped him early
Drugs also was a big fault of Dokes during his career. This guy used to sparr with Ali before he turned Pro.Ali predicted big things for him back then!!
Dokes was never this good again - making gardner look a lot worse than he was. dokes a great "on top" fighter had all the advantages here- but he was always eratic, struggled with ocasio and was intimidated by coetzee. as an old man he gave hollyfeild a great fight but it was too litle too late.
Brutal ending 19 un answered punches. Dokes could of been so much more. Thou I think he got very lucky against Mike Weaver both times to win his title.
Can only hope he is doing well these days? I hope the prick is rotting in his jail cell, where he'll spend another 25 years, having been convicted of bashing his girlfriend half to death in Jacksonville, Florida '98. He was sentences to thirty years. The veteran of the local sheriffs dept. said it was the worst beating he'd encountered. She was unidentifiable due to her injuries. Hope your getting fat smoking Mr BIG's cock in the shower room you cowardly piece of shit.....!!!
Gardener did well here considering how ultra talented Dokes was @ the time. I agree.Dokes?A totally wasted talent. Can only hope he is doing well these days.
Argualby the fastest heavyweight in the world at that time, though this performance may have not been the best of the night.Dokes was just starting to get his power, until that time, he was behind Cooney and Page.Could have been a great one.
Dokes, as you can see here, was very, very talented...& had a reqally tight game. You just don't see heavies fighting like this, today. Not a single one of them can put power combos together like that. It is really a tremendous drop off in SKILL LEVEL. I don't know if it's the training, or the fact today's heavies are just too big to fight like that. Dokes- a waste of talent, ultimately.

Yes, just like Jersey Joe Walcott, only Joe did it better to win the world title against Ezzard Charles.

He was sentenced to between 4 and 15 years in 1999, according to multiple sources. But I don't see any that says he's been paroled.
