@piratezism I have seen one of Durant's presentations. He talked about Shugart and Gordon at that time. I think Durant believes something interesting, and I buy into it. Shugart and Gordon likely knew they didn't have a chance. They were true heroes, basicaly willing to die with Durant so that an American wouldn't be abandoned and left to die alone. As it turned out, they bought time for the warlord to arrive which ended up buying Durant time to live. In that light, the sacfice is stunning
I know this is not important, but is it me, or did this guy age terribly in 15 years? He looks so much older and looks like a completely different person.
@DischWater actually rangers a re light infantry SPEC OPS that fall under army spec ops command and ussocom they are the militarys premiere raid force they have a much more rigourous training regime and are called upon for special units point blank Marines dont even compare with Rangers as they are not even close to the training and skill set Rangers can perform ALL SPECTRUMS of warfare conventional iand spec ops missions marines dont even come close
I trust or hopes he gives the proceeds of the book to the families of the 2 soldiers who died trying to protect him. If not then that leaves a sour taste I think after all the story everything admires is the the bravely of Shughart and Gordon at the end of the day.
@DischWater *ahem* where do you get your information? I agree that Marines have a bit more training, but that's only because boot camp(which is 12.weeks vs Army 8weeks) There is also the fact that the Marines are an amphibious assault unit and so there is more water training. As for the President controlling them...technically, the President controls ALL the armed forces...he IS the Commander in Chief. He doesn't personally call up the Marines to dispatch them tho :P
A lot of brave men gave their lives that day, but Shughart and Gordon saved his, he seems a little more interested in himself. I guess if It was me, I wouldn't quit thanking the men who allowed him to be standing in front of this crowd. Wow, this is just an impression I get from watching this.
@sinusbradycardia I found myself thinking that also..........I wonder why?
I read his books & got the feeling that he had nothing else to talk about.......he thanked the guys who saved him
a lot & then spoke in detail about the battle & then filled up the rest of the book with his story because what else could he talk about.................maybe he is a little self involved ;-p
@lollipoprock27 I don’t think he is ungrateful. I’m sure it’s a though subject for him and not something he wants to talk about all the time. I guarantee that day was the worse day of his life.
Sad how Shughart and Gordon died that day. If I had to sum up heroes in 4 words it would be Randy Sughart and Gary Gordon. All of the other men who gave their lives on that day like Lorenzo Ruiz and Dominic Pilla are all heroes in my eyes.
I got to see Mr.Durant at a presentation today with him as one of the guest speakers. One of the coolest, most down to earth guys after enduring such a great deal. Had a great sense of humor too.
1:51 -Yeah, just ask Chevron if there's no oil in Somalia. It was the oil companies that lobbied the Bush (senior) administration to secure the contracts they just made with the last Somali regime before it collapsed and warlords started to carve Somalia into fiefdoms.
President Clinton considered not sending armored vehicles to Somalia the biggest mistake he made as president, although it was really Les Aspen who made the decision.
Armor would have been useless. The city streets are one big bottleneck and the vehicles would have been even more fucked than the Hummvees that went through there. All we really needed was the AC130 gun ship that General Garrison requested and to attack at night. The Rangers and the UH-60 Black Hawks operated extremely well at night and were even nicknamed the Night Stalkers. Little mistakes with big consequences.
@ROGUEDETAIL Yes, Bradleys would have likely been useless. That said, they did have the AH-6 attack helicopters flying around the clock to support the ground forces. While they're not as heavily armed as a AC-130 (what is?) they are very precise. You could have had an AC-130, maybe two flying a top hat formation, but it's doubtful the MH-6s could have operated together with the AC-130s. The huge civilian casualties from AC-130 action were also important given the humanitarian aims.
Did you read the book too? Because thats exactly what Mark Bowden said in the Epilogue (which I read after posting this comment). So maybe a better understanding of exactly how much RPG's in the area would have helped.
@ROGUEDETAIL Yeah, I did read the book about 10 years ago. That must be where I heard that. I think perhaps the Bradley IFVs could have been of some use in the convoy, but they'd had a hard time with the side streets. I'm sure they could navigate the main roads, though.
So I was reading up on the Art Of War by Sun Tzu earlier, and one of his rules was that none of the higher up leaders should interfere with the generals. It just so happens that Gen. Garrison requested a bunch of things, consisting of armor to AC130's, that were denied. Due to having their own little idea of how the battle should play out. So maybe if they would of just let Gen. Garrison have what he requested. Things would have turned out differently. . .
To a certain extent, yes. As with everything, there are instances where this is incorrect. I'm certainly glad Truman didn't give MacArthur the nuclear weapons he wanted to use on the Chinese during the Korean War. That Kennedy didn't agree with his generals that striking Cuba was the best option during the Missile Crisis. Et cetera.
Guys at first the mission was to keep the peace in somalia- rolling in on an Abrams tank would unnerve the clans there and encourage war. They didn't expect a full-blown war, it was escalated into one by Habr Gidr troops.
@chillaxer1993 The mission should've only taken 30 - 60 minutes, tanks are too slow and the area is too small over there to use tanks, what they really needed were more advanced helicopters and gunships, black hawks are big and less agile then any other attack helicopter..
@bleushift Gen. Garrisson requested AC130's, but it was denied.. Simply because they managed to do very well with the material they had, Little Birds and Black Hawks, so HQ said: why the hell you need gunships now?? They were fallen prey to their own succes.. This wasn't their first mission in Mog, it had to happen that the Somali's would one time be able to fight back properly.. All by all, the mission wasn't a catastrofe, most men did make it back to base, but that's the militairy..
@chillaxer1993 Strykers would have been good, could have scattered crowds and knock down some houses where they were getting fire, would have saved a ton of lives.
@chillaxer1993 strykers were set in place in 2002, so that was out of the question..but any APC would have been efficient..you are defiantly right about tank support..but there was a warning about keeping civilian casualties down and tanks really didn't have that effect..remember this was a somewhat private intervention at the time
thats the problem.if you go to some ones land which you have never been in that means your enemy who lives there will know every certain detail. But respect to the soldiers who died

no thats a lie to callofdutymaster411. Gary and Randy were not the greatest heros of delta. the 19 men that died saving the rest of the soldiers are the heros
Is it just me, or is it kind of off-putting how casual he is about this. I mean he saw good men being killed before him. Two of them died so he could live. He was held captive for over a week, probably under the impression he was going to die. Yet, he's pretty nonchalant about the whole thing.
nickthepunk22 randy and gordon died bravely in the crash site not in the humvee!! wat do they mean (washington) for having too much high profile in somalia.... so having AC-130u spectre gunships and M1A1 abrams are too much high profile!!!
thats just BULLSHIT!!!!! if only gunships were there they would have still be alive and be a living legend!!!!! sergeant 1st class Gordon, master sergeant shughart, our memories go with you!!! you are a legend to us!!!! RIP
Thank then Secretary of Defense Les Aspin for not wanting to send in heavy armour for support. Mr Durant alludes to this with his comments concerning No Gunships or Tanks. I look forward to reading Mr Durant's book 'In the Company of Heroes'
Very true. One of my friends dad is someone who looks into these sort of logisitical decisions (I'm pretty sure he was in the army.) He looked at the case and straight away pointed out that if they had the AC-130's, Tanks then losses would have been much lower. Also he said that they shouldve gone in with more Little Birds - at the start they went in with ones carrying troops. There wasnt enough for some to provide minigun cover from the start.
A much more humble and honest former P.O.W. than John McCain. He kinda brags about it and exaggerates. I'm not saying that Vietnam wasn't tough, but he would make a very good actor. If you had the Rolling Stone magazine back a few months ago, you know what I mean.
Great American Hero, and his books are awesome. Blackhawk Down is an amazing book I remember reading it way back when in '00 when I got out of school.
Most of it is real, alot of it was dramatized. Durant was released 11 days after he was captured I believe. All that you said really happened. But Griz really didn't get cut in half, his left side of his body was messed up really bad but not as bad as in the movie. And most of the characters in the film are combinations of different soldiers that fought in the battle.
Yeah, they held that posistion alot longer than the movie portrayed. They died protecting him, he was captured, they recieved the medal of honor for the actions. Read the book, explains alot more.
hey guys..um just curious, did he have any talks about shugart and gordon? just wanted to hear it 4rm the man himself.

no thats a lie to callofdutymaster411. Gary and Randy were not the greatest heros of delta. the 19 men that died saving the rest of the soldiers are the heros

Dominick Pilla died on the .50 cal in a Humvee. Randy and Gary died defending Mike Durants crash site.

Is it just me, or is it kind of off-putting how casual he is about this. I mean he saw good men being killed before him. Two of them died so he could live. He was held captive for over a week, probably under the impression he was going to die. Yet, he's pretty nonchalant about the whole thing.

If you read his book you will see how this effects him on a day to day basis

Are you a combat vet? If not you are just a silly lil person, and could never understand.

I think maybe its because he just tries to put it out of his mind. I'm amazed that he's handling such an emotional subject so well in this video.

Shugart and gordan were two very amazing and honorable men RIP
sandythebear 2 years ago 2
nickthepunk22 randy and gordon died bravely in the crash site not in the humvee!! wat do they mean (washington) for having too much high profile in somalia.... so having AC-130u spectre gunships and M1A1 abrams are too much high profile!!!
thats just BULLSHIT!!!!! if only gunships were there they would have still be alive and be a living legend!!!!! sergeant 1st class Gordon, master sergeant shughart, our memories go with you!!! you are a legend to us!!!! RIP

SFC Gordon and MSG Shughart are true American heroes. They should never be forgotten.

Mr.Durant,
You are the reason I joined the US Army and put in my WOFT packet. You are my hero. I hope to be able to meet you someday.

Great American Hero, and his books are awesome. Blackhawk Down is an amazing book I remember reading it way back when in '00 when I got out of school.

BLACK HAWK DOWN MOVIE WAS A TRUE STORY
PharesComment 3 years ago 4
so mike was captured, jamie was killed, grimes injured his leg,d'tamasto gets hit and nelson gets deaf is all real?
ShadowLugia555 3 years ago
Most of it is real, alot of it was dramatized. Durant was released 11 days after he was captured I believe. All that you said really happened. But Griz really didn't get cut in half, his left side of his body was messed up really bad but not as bad as in the movie. And most of the characters in the film are combinations of different soldiers that fought in the battle.
Edordorito 3 years ago 2
Yeah, they held that posistion alot longer than the movie portrayed. They died protecting him, he was captured, they recieved the medal of honor for the actions. Read the book, explains alot more.
