In the days when well born girls were bargaining tools and married off at a very early age for political advancement, it was important that they remained virgins. For this reason I don't think Henry would have touched her until she was much older than a child

Am I the only one irritated by Alys' sanctimony? Everything she says about Eleanor's ruthlessness is true, but she owes Eleanor some respect as the woman who raised her, and she's in fact sleeping with Eleanor's husband. Exactly what has Eleanor done to Alys, except cruel and cutting words?
@TheOurobouros No, she's been on my nerves from scene one, LOL! Personally it makes me a little ill to think that she was only a child when Henry first saw her and now he's bonking her. How she could want him as a lover rather than a father figure is beyond me...
@TheOurobouros I think you kind of miss that Alys treated Eleanor the way she did because of her love for Henry and how she saw how much the woman was hurting him.
You see this scene and rightly say, "true" yet the Academy said "O'Toole?" no, not you. A bad day. Cliff Roberton was great as Charlie but Peter WAS Henry II.
Chinon is quite fantastic. I have fun visiting all these places, for real, and arrange to be the guide.

It was criminal that O'Toole missed out on the Oscar for this film.
