had the absolutely and entirely unexpected chance to see one of these guys take off as I was waiting for a rental car at ABQ airport last month. Fantastic
I'm not really sure why we reinvented the wheel with the V-22.
We had this technology completely functioning and workable in 1965 in the LTV XC-142, and also in the Canadair CL-84. Of course back then, the military didn't foresee an urgent need for a VTOL that had an extended combat radius. So here we are 40 years later reinventing the wheel at the cost of billions of taxpayer dollars.
I mean, why use something we've already developed when you could start from scratch and charge more.
@BUCEnGAR We can fit more V-22s on an Aircraft Carrier than we could with the XC-142s. Besides, I think protection matters, don't think the XC-142 has any sort of armour, looks like a plane wih thin sheet metal.
@rushforce33 the US army just issued a new ah-60l blackhawk with 2 agm114 rocket pods and 2 missile (19) pods on the outer left along with 2 M2 50's and 2 M-134 miniguns
BAE will place a ''remote guardian system ''on those planes.so in near future those transoprt planes will be equiped with a remoted machine gun.the cost of that upgrade will cost more or less only 9 million euros.its nice that usa trust european union for upgrading the usa military equipment
just so you know when it transitions to airplane mode the engines dont gotta work so hard so RPM is dropped but damn that thing looks brand spankin new. no aircraft number or callsign
@samuelylee No your not !! Both engines are connected to each other my means of a drive shaft crossing the fuselage. If one engine fails then the 'dead' prop can still feed from the 'Live' engine. Whilst in aeroplane mode it can do this for pretty much as long as needed, in helo mode it can stay up feeding from 1 engine for about 30 mins which is long enough to make a safe landing after searching for the landing spot in plane mode, make the transition to helo mode and make a safe landing
Can you see the propellors when they reach so many revolutions the pilot has an option to make the engines go quite as the propellors are slighlty at an angle when the pilot has the option they level out making absolutly no noise at all which is good for covert operations such as what I do in iraq and afghanistan
@rushforce33 nor do i ive been inserted behind enemy lines on my own in one of those oi took four SAM hits and a hell of a lot of pounding from flak without returning any fire and the same one came and extracted me on the same night without any repairs its an amazing VTOL
I'm just saying the CH-46 has been doing MORE than the osprey since VIETNAM....why throw something away thats been doing the job GREAT for that long ?
i'm not knocking the osprey.....EXCEPT that the AIR FORCE replaced the MH-53 (the greatest thing sikorsky ever thought of) with this thing....that's bogus
@rushforce33 I think the reason they are doing it is because the ospery out classes it in durability and speed along with the capacity to be multirole aircraft they started using them for recon then offensive and many other things. It does make sense why spend millions on different aircrafts when you can spend almost half the price on one of those which can do all those things.
I have a slightly off-topic question, which may seem obvious to people in the know, but isn't obvious to me -- why would this vehicle ever NOT take off in VTOL mode?
Why would you skitter down the runway with the engines partially rotated?
Why not just take off vertically every single time, if you could?
@AnonymousElektron they probably had to take off of the runway because of orders from the control tower and if not it's easier to take of that way since the wings provide some lift and they consequentially don't have to burn as much fuel.
@rohannat Far, far faster. And for longer distances too (as the planes wings provide most of the lift while in flight). This is an amazing aircraft that meets the meets of the marines.
Although I'm a little confused as to why you would edit out the more dramatic parts, such as the GT spool and initial spin up of the rotors, while leaving in the scenes where they're just taxiing or idling on the runway.
Do you have an unedited version? Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing those other parts.
@User8571 Man, I took this quite a few years ago right after I had bought that video camera, and looking back I have no clue what my reasoning was behind the way I edited it. Weird! I don't have the original video unfortunately, I just checked. Bummer.
bet the coast guard would LOVE this. those guys from 'deadliest catch' would love to know that this is comin to get em out of the drink shaken....but alive. with enough room for everyone.
There are 2 paints right now. One is the color grey you see there and the other is a more metallic colored grey that is IR suppressant paint. But thats it for now.
The program is doing very well. There are 4 active Marine squadrons (VMM-162, 261, 263 (deployed since Sept 2007), and 266: all 4 from MCAS New River), 2 active Air Force squadrons (8th Special Ops: Hurlburt Field, and 71st SOS: Kirtland AFB), 1 training squadron (VMMT-204: MCAS New River), and one test squadron (VMX-22: MCAS New River).
I see them alot and have about 10 videos of them on my channel. Awesome birds to watch
This was filmed at Easterwood Airport in College Station, TX. The V-22 was being delivered to the Marines. And the thing that was supposed to happen at 1:20 wasn't visible in this edit.
I just thought it looked really cool because the rotation of the rotors lined up perfectly with the fps of the camcorder, so it made it look like the rotors were standing completely still for about four seconds. I guess in the transfer to youtube the framerate got compressed, so it disappeared.
I really need to re-edit this video to a shorter length. Its a little long even for me.
it's such a high tech invention of the human
