I'm still blown away by these guys. But this song -- usually played near the end of their setlist. You'd think the brass players would be tired -- oh NO! Nails it every time I have ever seen them! If you have never seen these guys live -- even if you aren't familiar with their music -- go see them. They put on a helluva show and have been putting on amazing shows for well over 40 years.
Ah ha!!!! East Bay Grease -- Drunk as a Skunk, Loose as a Goose. Fantastic band...and they still sound great! Raider Nation! Always will be a Bay Area babe! They are playing in WA State in October. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon. Guess where I'll be!!??

back in the day, name is cliffie my band played top to the bone,if only i could find some of the bandmembers i would play tower once again i'm from whittier cal. memories for everyone, know what i mean!
I loved it when they were younger and would all go down on one knee at the same time, it was a crowd pleaser like no other! They are still the best live band ever!!
Freakishly good horn line - here let me play some of the hardest horn parts ever written, then immediately put down the horn and sing in perfect harmony. Makes me wanna puke with joy.
Classic Classic Classic Classic Tower Power. Love this song no matter how old it is. This is real music from back in the day. And we are still young men because of this song. U go ToP
Miss L ur rite that's not the original lead singer if u have a gud ear and listen closely at the beginin of the song before the lead singer comes in the high trumpet player hit a note that's shrillingly Flat!! But it's live and yes their still Great!!! Heat WaveS Always and for ever is the style of music that iam so fotunate to come from that era wer is that Sweet harmony n Horn section like those today? No wer!! Thank God most of the Originals are around!!! Ummmummummm!!!!
They still sound good, I will always be a Fan, of those Bad ass horn playas, and Lenny Williams and all their singers, because they know how to blow them horns around them.
Where is a taping of Rick Stevens (the original lead vocal on "You're Still a Young Man")? It's his voice, not Lenny Williams, who's on the original recording.
You're right on one of these other vids somebody posted in the comments section the situation about Rick and how Lenny got on board as the lead singer I think Rick got locked up or something like that.
Thanks, for posting the Video. This song came out when I was going through Basic training at Ft Ord California. Lots of memories for me listening to this song.
This is beautiful!!!!!! I love this song. The Alabama State band trumpet section used to play the beginning of the intro in the stands back in the 1980's. Still the best trumpet solo ever to me!!!!!
A few years ago at the LA street scene, I saw a bunch of hardcore gang bangers respond to the trumpet intro by running to the Tower of Power stage like schoolgirls running to see Elvis.
I knew a jailhouse guy who would have scared the devil himself. I saw him break the glasses and the nose of a police sergeant before the cops went to town on him, and he used to cry like a baby when ever he heard the song nothing else matters.
Ahhh ,Tower of Power, just saw them in San Mateo, Ca. Brought back some good memory's! Had a ball had a few tequila shots and was just perfect hearing these songs, one of my favorites "still a young man" it was played for my youngsters, ha! Back in my days Santana, War, Average White Band were the BEST. That's what you call classic urban soul.
If it took an amateur video to provide us with an amazing sounding band alongside the most beutiful black man with a voice that touches the center of me, well, then Iam grateful for this amateur video. Thanks for posting, Beevsterk
I love this group i'm not to young for love so If you can show me I'm willing to learnI am a former member of the shantations we always performed this song this brings back lots of memories
The video is obviously from an amateur. Therefore, the video sucks, the sound sucks. The band does NOT suck. What do you listen to? Do you know how to read music? Do you have a clue?
I just love this song!!! Not the best quality but it IS a LIVE performance. I just can't get over that ending trumpet solo!!!! The Alabama State Band used to play that number in the stands and I always just had to stop and LISTEN!! Thanks for the video!!!!
Thanks for this vid!!! I still haven't gotten to hear them live with Larry, but I love his voice. As a singer, I know it sometimes gets really hard to hear yourself due to sound setup and then you end up pitchy. (Why you need a GREAT sound man!!)
I don't know about Adolfo and the high note escapades here - he's amazing, I saw him a few times w Maynard and wow - but I still like to hear just clean dead-on lead in this, Greg's arrangement doesn't need embellishment IMO! ;)
One thing our band leader to us one day. " you don't have to dance around alot this one, don't be fancy. Just play clean. No ups and downs, Don't dribble the song just play it simple. He's was right. My hats off to the trumpet player here. He did sound like he did fall off just a tad in the beggining. But great ending.
Look for Gilbert Sedenio's version at Pura Vida Awards 1995. There's a bonified paid symphony there. The orchestra version over there including Back up vocals were just great, accept for one of the vocalist. I will not mentioned his name. We played this song down here with an never ending burn theme.
This performance is not their best but, I got to hand it to that high note specialist trumpet player...That cat can really wail on the high notes. He is perfectly at home up there..Make most guys faint! Remember this is a very inferior recording..(boom box quality) so not to worry! TOP always excites and excells.
All my best to Mr Prestia..my favorite bass player. What about that drummer! I got to chat with him at the bar at Jazz Alley in Seattle. The groove masters on this planet!
I'm with you there...yet, I understand his plight, as this is usually played/sung toward the end of their shows, and his voice is undoubtedly as tired as it can be by that time. (If you have the Live in Germany DVD from 2005, you'll hear he and the band are off on this song, too, which is unfortunate.) But anytime TOP does this song, it's always a treat!
Rocco and David back together an awesome rhythm section.
