...and his main istrument is what? ...trumpet? I've listened to him over the years, just wish he'd done more piano work. I guess we can't have everything...
Arturo Sandoval is really a genius!! But when he plays the trumpet he wants always to show all his technical skills and sometimes it is too much... but when he plays the piano he is just concentrated in playing music and he enjoys it!!
@elandujazz I disagree; I think he is simply being himself on the trumpet, he has nothing to prove. He is just as smooth at playing faster things as the slower stuff, I don't see him as a "watch how fast and technical I am" type. He simply is what he is. He's just as technical on piano...and as musical, I believe.
@ricaard I agree with you when you say that "he has nothing to prove". I also think that he is very musical when he plays but I think that he abuses his viruosity and it looses its effect or impact... but I think of course that he is a great musician.
@elandujazz I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I see your point from your point of view, but don't share it; I love his reckless abandon and absolute freedom when he plays! I opened for him a few years back and was blown away, not just with his facility, but his joy at expressing himself at whatever speed without worrying about someone else's thought of good speed vs bad speed.
I have seen Sandoval play piano at NYC's Blue Note, where he sat down at a Bosendorfer grand previously used by Oscar Peterson and proceeded to morph from Dizzy Gillespie/Maynard Ferguson to Peterson! Should he ever lose his lip for some unfortunate circumstance, he could easily continue his musical career as a pianist.

what I like about his piano playing the most is that he seems to be in a whole different world when he plays it.
With the trumpet, he's playing to you, but with the piano he plays for his own pleasure.
