@sracha1130 I guess it could just be seen as instinct not 'science and math concepts', we could just say they are something humans named science and maths and we study it because we dont understand it unless we learn it.. even if it may be surprising to humans that ants can use direction cues that a lot of humans dont even understand but its just an everyday instinctive thing to them, like us using familiar sights and landmarks to wander around our hometown without getting lost :)
@emjayxluv in the same way that some aborigines can only fathom directions relative to north, south, east, west, and not to themselves. there's no left, right, front, back, and thus, they have an almost ingrained sense of direction many of us cannot get, even with a compass.
@disprefer Well I know that normal ants leave mental images of their surroundings so they can remember where home is. These ants look like they just take in a lot more pictures than other ants. Its more visual memory than anything else.
Living in the Sahara is like living on the moon. The adaptive pressures are so extreme that everything that lives there is gonna be the equivalent of ant that can do geometry in its head.
An ant forged in the desert is definitely a cut above her temperate cousins.
i think its not guaranteed (we haven't destroyed ourselves yet), but its a good possibility. they're so dominant in so many areas of the world. perhaps the most successful species in existence.
I fucking swear that ants are the scariest god damn creatures.

Geometry? Wouldn't this be trig? And how does it factor out the hills? Can it do calculus too?

roaches are not the toughest. there are many insects that can survive better under intense radiation, heat, frost, pollution etc ...
but they are very ancient and very adaptive.
they will not dominate the world, but they will continue to exist, and eventually ... who knows ? ;)
