Um... I have 125 missiles and 20 super missiles. I unloaded them all into Ridley and then he turns red and doesn't die. I start trying power bombs and charged shots but then he grabs me and kills me. What do I do???

@LoneSniperWolf Unload all the supers plus eight charged ice/wave/plasma shots into him, then lay a power bomb to get him to pick you up so he'll self-destruct. Add two charged beam shots for every three supers that miss if you don't hit with them all.

@artinbazikyan That's the normal order for them, yes. You go left from the lower Norfair elevator, pick up the Screw Attack, and then circle down to the right to head towards Ridley. Getting it after beating Ridley would be much more trouble because you'd either have to exit lower Norfair and then go back down the elevator again or else go backwards through the big acid-filled room.

i'm doing a speedrun and i'm at 1:03 with five energy tanks, 55 missiles and 15 super missiles at the save right before Ridley. i haven't lost so much as an energy tank on any of the bosses except for Ridley. Ridley is the only boss who can kill me. :(

@mrshickadance25 Your video's aspect ratio is wrong because it got stretched out to widescreen and it's extremely blurry from being upscaled. The only reason it looks at all better is because most of my Super Metroid videos are older and originally encoded in Xvid instead of H.264.

@mrshickadance25 The only benefit to recording at 720p, though, is that you can control what kind of upscaling filter is used up to that point, unless maybe YouTube allows higher quality compression on HD videos.

I prefer to use the Simple 2X filter to keep the pixels sharp. It makes it easier to tell exact pixel distances, which is important for stuff like this that requires high precision. I also think it looks better than making everything super blurry like hq4x does.

Hey hey I have a question. Iv'e been editing with smile and never played the whole game so please don't say I'm a noob. Anyways, don't you take damage when ridley grabs you when your in morphball? And howcome when I charge and space jump it doesn't let me shoot charged shots?

No, only if he hits you with his tail while he has hold of you or you touch his body when he drops you. Normally that almost always happens when he picks you up, except when picking you up causes his death.

To fire a charged shot directly out of a spin jump, you have to make sure you're fully charged, so that Samus starts flashing white, before jumping. You don't build any charge while spin jumping.

Saying Super Missiles are more effective than the charged plasma beam is like saying the sky is blue. And surely you NEED to use the corner trick to beat him.

I shudder to imagine how long it takes you, and how much health you lose, standing there charging your beam up, taking repeated damage instead of avoiding the attacks XD

Well, charged ice/wave/plasma does 1.5x the damage of super missiles against Ridley. Super missiles just come out a little ahead because you can fire them faster. The gap between them isn't that huge.

The corner trick definitely does become a lot more useful if you're using charged shots. Finding time to charge in between dodging is tricky.

Either you're not charging it or you're shooting his tail. Uncharged beam shots don't damage him and his tail blocks any projectiles that touch it.

How many super missiles do you have? It takes 30 to get him to zero health, at which point he should die if he picks you up. And it takes six normal missiles to do as much damage as one super missile.

You can also use charged beam shots if you run out of missiles. That'll probably be more effective that using a ton of power bombs.

You're not hitting his tail a bunch, are you? Any shots that impact on the tail won't hurt him. And if he's picking you up and then just dropping you, it means you haven't done enough damage yet. Charged Ice/Wave/Plasma shots do 1.5x the damage of super missiles against Ridley so they can quickly make up for any misses.

Actually, you don't have to...

I was playing this to get away from Redesign's furiously frustrating gameplay. I skipped space jump, speed boost, grapple beam, Draygon, and almost all of Maridia (aside from going through without gravity suit and grapple beam to enter the Wrecked Ship backwards) to go fight Ridley (he was so easy after Redesign), and I blew the crap out of him without him grabbing me at all. He just blew up in the air.

Grabbing you is the second way he dies. He's got 2 ways.

No Screw Attack (and I assume no Space Jump) would make this fight much harder, yeah. I'd recommend staying on the platform pretty much all the time, either crouched and firing up into Ridley or using the Morph Ball to move and roll under his tail stabbing when he gets close. That way you won't have to worry about his fireballs.

That's explained in the second to last paragraph of the video description. Basically it makes Ridley try to pick you up and thus lets you end the fight sooner once you've done enough damage.

Escape? Like, from lower Norfair? Just go back up from the last save point before Ridley, go right into the room where the light fades in and out, up to the top of that room, and walk through the fake wall on the left. Follow that passage to get back into upper Norfair. Then collect more stuff.

But for anyone else who is having trouble with Ridley just never forget your charge beam packs a huge punch if you've got all the beams at that point. It really comes in handy if you misfire your SM a lot at first. Just sayin'

I found Super Metroid to be rather easy. That's not saying anything against it, because I think it's one of the top three games of all time. Just goes to show that difficulty is not all that important an element in the creation of a great game, like some poeple pretend it is. All that matters is that the game is fun.

It only takes 30 but Ridley almost always has to pick you up before he'll die. For the video I just unloaded all that I had to make sure I'd hit him enough before letting him pick me up, since it's hard to count your misses during the battle.

I went and tried this just for the hell of it and I don't think it's possible. Since I'm lacking both the Morph Ball and Screw Attack there doesn't seem to be any way to avoid him when he flies straight at me. I can dodge his swooping and fireballs, and hit him enough to make him drop the Metroid, without much trouble though.
