hes there, must have had a reason to not play his part for the first 45 sec or so, or the sound guy didnt have his channel up, he gets on it in time for the heavier lead riff at 45 to 1.20
well at least for me at this time ashes against the grain is better than the mantle and is my favorite album thanks for the tracks fire above ice below, not unlike the waves, and the last 3 songs Ours fortness is burning
If I had heard this version before knowing Agalloch I wouldn't get interested in the band. This is just standard, good but not exceptional (despite poor sound quality) and the CD version is outstanding. Oh, and thanks for mentioning some other bands cause I'm quite green in post-rock and dark metal.
Um, similar bands? How about Ulver, Agalloch's main influence, note: the older Ulver, the new sounds different. Other bands I would list would be, yes, Neurosis, as well as Pelican, and Isis. Opeth as well, somewhat, though you said not to list them. Anyway, hope that helps a bit.
Pelican and Isis coincide with Agalloch's post-rock influences, an important part of their sound. The extensive vamping, minor-key tonality, psychedelic feel, etc.
love agalloch, this is metal art, yu can put them in the genre of frest metal, as it goes so well with dark woods and stuff, cant wait for their next album, can anyone name another similar sounding band and pls dont say opeth
Velnias . . . Clad In Darkness . . . Death In June (though that's not metal), some Ulver . . . argh. I know people who could give you more. Those are fairly loose, the first two are probably simultaneously the closest and most obscure.
There is no reverbe effect, there is no backing vocal... It's really hard in this condition to product the same vocals sonorities in lives prestations.
Try singing in front of an audience in a different place every night with a different sound system, different acoustics, different "sound engineer", etc. before commenting on vocal quality. If you can't hear the music clearly, it's very difficult to sing in tune. Plus this was recorded on a cell phone, most likely. Keep it in perspective.
favorite agalloch song. wish there was a video for the whole song

judging by the headstock on johns guitar, hes using a prs.
steveshredz 2 years ago
actually i thought PRS at first but i found they use schecters.
dankalmanson 2 years ago
John also uses godin guitars. At their show in london he alternated between an LG and an exit 22. Don was using schecter 6 and 7 string guitars

What does it matter what sub genre they fall under. They are a great band, listen, love it.
WNxNokturnal 3 years ago 5
Is this genre described as "Doom Metal" ?
snorhoofd 3 years ago
They call themselves "dark metal," but it isn't very clearly defined what that means.
DarknessDescends86 3 years ago

its not doom.. doom is something like Tiamat or My Dying Bride or As I Lay Dying.. this i think is more towards atmospheric dark metal.
samrit86 3 years ago
you forgot the folk part..
it's all nouns and adjectives to describe, in vain, sound and feeling.
hornsofarabbit 3 years ago
...Since when is As I Lay Dying doom metal? And Tiamat is more gothic metal.
FeatherofHuginn 3 years ago 3
sorry. As I Lay Dying from US is a metalcore band. As I Lay Dying from Austria is Melodic Doom/Death Metal. Tiamat is gothic yes.
samrit86 3 years ago 5
Ah, alright. I wasn't aware of the Australian band.
FeatherofHuginn 3 years ago
*Austrian

man, you're so stupid. As I lay Dying is AUSTRIAN band, not Australian. They are the followers of Visceral Evisceration

As I recall, I corrected myself not a second later than I posted that. Stupid typo error on my part. Scroll down and reflect.

I actually like the way the beginning sounds with an electric lead better. The acoustic guitars kind of take away from the heaviness.

I don't think Agalloch are much of a live band. Takes a lot away from the atmosphere.

Yeah, that's precisely what Agalloch said when explaining why they don't like playing live.
