Can't get enough of this sound...I'm new to the "'Huff". Of course, being a guitarist I go cookoo over Greg's playing and tone(he's one of the greats, and truly "gets it" when it comes to tone and playing ability)....but the rest of the band is tight as hell, vocals fit like a glove. Hat's off to you guys, if you're ever in Indy I'll beat feet to grab tickets for the show!
He doesn't attenuate those old Marshalls. Part of it is that the wiring in his 58 isn't done "properly", giving it a killer tone, so he never bothered fixing it.
@rockerjt The 58 has 2 original PAF's The Marshalls are on 10 and Brodie is behind the board. Never heard anything about the wiring isnt done properly. Greg can make any guitar sound like this from the new guitar that Gibson has made (a relic of his 58) to a 1957 strat and a slew of juniors , 335's . If there is a wiring problem , then all his guitars have the same problem.....Greg is the best and the sound ? well its in his hand.
@jte1974 Here is a link and a quote from the RS Guitarworks website. Greg and I also corresponded about this once:
Pre-Wire kit is wired the way Greg Martin's guitar was "mistakenly" wired to give you the fattest tone you will find. It's the only way to get Greg's hillbilly channel switchin' style down. The kit includes a wiring schematic to replicate the "mistaken" wiring, and a letter from Greg Martin describing how it all works.
@jte1974it won't let me post the link. I agree anyway, it is more Greg and the Marshall than the guitar, but he swears the 58 sounds different because of the wiring.
James.. Correct. The wiring on my 1958 is a tad different, but I couldn't tell you what it is. You can contact RS Guitar Works, they actually sell a harness that simulates my guitars wiring. I can't remember how my '58 wiring got changed now, I probably did something back in the 90's to change it, but it worked out even better for my ears. All the best, glad you like Rufus Huff....
@rockerjt All I can tell ya James is come to the next show April 30th in Bowling Green Ky at Wha Bah Steak house. The 58 doesnt hold back any volume, may be a different sound but those Marshalls will tell you themselves, and as Greg said , Glad you like the Huff. Jarrod.
@jte1974 Hey Jarrod. Thanks for the invite; I would love to be there, but I am out in California; get Greg to bring them out here, LOL. Anyway, just figured I would post that info, because I knew Greg said something about the wiring on that LP. Anyway, like it has been said, I am sure it is way more Greg than wiring, pickups, etc. Amazing tone. I wish I could get away with cranking old Marshalls at shows around here, LOL. Take care man.....JT
@jte1974 Crap, Jarrod, duh!!!! I can't believe that wasn't obvious to me, and here I am telling you about Greg's stuff, LOL. Jarrod, I am a huge fan of your singing; you have the coolest voice I have heard since Ray Gillen, and you pull it off live; amazing. Yes, definitely will meet you guys half-way one of these days. I hope to hear new tunes from you someday too. Keep rockin' Jarrod.
@jte1974 BTW, Jarrod, do you get to see the band live a lot? I was really excited when I heard the stuff from these guys (before the album came out, via a mutual friend); bought the CD first day it was available. So much talent in this band. Greg is so bad-ass, tasty great tone, bass player and drummer are solid and the singer is f'ing incredible; that guy should be a star. I can't wait until they do a new CD. Take care.
How loud must that be for him to get that tone with no pedals? Thats is just perfect LP tone. I suppose he's attenuated, otherwise thats one loud street dance.
Just like the tones the mix was great. Greg, yeah he's loud, oh but the tones are so sweet to the ears, no harshness at all. The only reaction my ears give even when im standing directly in front of the cabs is.. FINALLY!
No. Man with all do respect , i think we're pros . You can crank a Marshall up to a pair of 8's 9's 10's and if you know what you're doing its not painful. Dont get me wrong , we have had a few shows and afterwards my ears were ringing but then again my ears ring and always will. Just remember , people didnt go to see AC/DC or the WHO because its easy listening music. We're rock and roll .. its gonna be loud or else. But its the right kind of loud. Dont bring your grandmother.. God Bless
