Imagine the heartbreaking task of entering the crime scene where your daughter and granddchildren were brutally murdered, then trying to put that aside so that you can study it as an officer would have had to. To see the loopholes in testimony given by the very person who should have died protecting his family. Despair than anger in the worst sense, and then finally the pursuit of justice no matter the cost. They could not have cast a better man to portray Mr. Kassab than Karl Malden.
Plus his wounds were so minimal compared to his family's and the Tate/LaBianca murders. He was a 'pig' and would have been beaten and murdered like all of the other victims, no holds barred. His story would have been credible had he survived with massive trauma and beaten in the form received by all the others, barely alive. Even if they were holding him while they killed, no father, no husband will stand by and allow his children and pregnant wife to be murdered. He'll fight for their safety.
If 4 hippies(Manson-ish)had REALLY done this, then why, in their past crimes, they always dealt with the men first, allowing them full reign and to fulfill their prophecy to its entirety, this by killing ALL in an equally violent fashion. He would have been the main threat, so he would have been killed first and foremost. McDonald's story is ludicrious. When he wrote 'Pig', his pajama fibers were found there. He used these crimes and the fear instilled by them to kill his family. A TRUE MONSTER.
One of the best scenes in the book Fatal Vision (and don't let MurderMac apologists deter you from what has become one of the classics in the true crime genre, it's a fabulous book and what pisses MurderMac so much is how Joe McG managed to capture him and his terrible crimes so pefectly) is when Joe McG goes into 544 Castle Drive himself. Stuff in the kitchen, toys, calendar, Christmas tinsel, among the bloodstains...it's so sad.
Creepy feel all around when Freddy (Karl Malden) starts walking around and observing the crime scene. The music doesn't help either lol No doubt that Jeffrey MacDonald did indeed murder his family. The evidence is all there. He's right where he belongs.
this is fantastic.... you captured two of the most poignant scenes of one of the most compelling movies of the last 30 years (this and the Paul Stombaugh "here's how it happened" scene). For me, watching the Valentine's cards fall down was one of the biggest "oh my God" moments of the movie
There's no doubt he commited these murders and I hope he rots in hell, but has anyone ever concluded why he did this. I realize motiveless crimes are commited all the time, but in this case it's hard to explain. Was he tired of family life? Did he have a sudden and inexplicable burst of rage due to an argument with his wife? Maybe because he had already killed one he couldn't let the others live? This story is simply awful and shocking.
Yep, those valentine cards standing on end was the got ya moment for me too. I can't remember if that was mentioned in the book, but if it was a fact in the case, there is no way a fight happened in that room.
The fact all family members had different blood types, tells me everything I need to know. If there had been a struggle from indruders why were there no blood trails or skin and or fibers found under the family's finger nails. Collette fought mighty hard, you don't get two broken arms just standing there. You get them from fending off blows. I hope Jeffery MacDonald rotts in jail. JMHO
The only blood found in the hallway where he claims to have woken up was what I mentioned in my original reply - that one spot that was too small to be definitively typed and could have also been Kristen's.
@KristenKalianassaKat You can speculate about the television, candles, etc. all you want but the fact is, it's irrelevant. Mac could have set up movie lights around the house and turned them all on. There were no intruders. MacDonald committed the murders himself..
@KristenKalianassaKat The light would not have been enough to enable MacDonald to describe the intruders as he did. Also, not even Mac or his defense tried to claim that the light from the television was significant.
Because Jeffrey MacDonald says it doesn't make it a fact. I wonder how the TV got off if it was indeed on - did the intruders turn it off? Did MacDonald stop to turn it off after he awoke and found his family murderered.
Fatal Vision states that none of HIS blood was found in the living room/hallway where he says he was attacked and that is accurate, except that a very small bit of blood was found in the hallway that was too small to be definitively typed - it could have been his or Kristen's. The blood on the glasses was Kristen's type and it was a smudge.
@KristenKalianassaKat The only reason the glasses had blood on them is b/c MacDonald put them on to review the issue of Esquire magazine and get his story ready. It's no coincidence that another blood spot was found on the magazine itself.
@KristenKalianassaKat Have you seen the crime scene photographs? The television was very small and the illumination from a screen full of static would not have helped Mac to see at all.
Yes, before Mr. Kassab turned on any lights, the apartment just doesn't look that boarded up. I can see daylight plain as day. I see light on the walls and Freddy didn't turn anything on yet. You figured if boarded up there would be no light period.
MacDonald made the same mistake three times during the actual interview. It is believed he continued to say "bed" instead of "couch" b/c the real fight - between Mac and Colette - began in the bedroom and involved their bed.
wow powerful heartbreaking scene karl malden perfectly cast i live 30 minutes away from ft bragg where it happened so sad

To KristenKalianassaKat: He is guilty, he is in jail where he rightfully belongs, and he is going to DIE there. Good riddance. So get over it.

@KristenKalianassaKat There is plenty of MacDonald's blood in the bathroom b/c that's where he inflicted his own wound(s).
