it just blows my mind how awful of drivers those cops are...i didnt even know how they got in half of the wrecks they did..like at 2:20 i was like wtf!!
Really much more convincing than the crappy remake... in this film you can see that the american muscle cars are powerful understeer bitches (until you apply full gas, that is) and the realism of the chase can be told by anyone who understands a bit about cars. Films like this, Driver (with Ryan O'Neal), Bullit and Mad Max are sadly long gone classics of an era where real driving was more important than camera angle, marketing and such crap.
@morrismagic08 - The sounds are all wrong on this. Watch the original on VHS - This is the re-mastered 1974 - don't know why they didn't keep original soundtrack. The sirens are even wrong for the era
If you wanna see a real car chase check out "Vanishing Point." I was 16 years old when I saw it at the local drive in, got a speeding ticket on the way home in 1973, $35.00, girl friend helped me get the money to pay the fine, lotta money in "73 thought I was Kawolski.
This is a very cool car chase but it's kind of sad. I know how the old muscle cars were common in the '60s and '70s but what were they thinking on destroying all of those beautiful muscle cars?!!!! What idiots!!
PS, at 3:04, is that an old Ford Hot Rod? How often do you see that on the freeway?
@ConnorMonkey13 dude back then these were not known as the muscle car era the 70s was the gas embargo and the pinto was big these were jumk cars used ive seen the behind the scenes on this they were not idiots it would be like me useing a saturn or honda accord in todays times
@ExCHP No offense to anyone, but they all just ran into each other like the Keystone Kops. That probably would not have happened in real life. I understand the entire chase was mostly un-scripted, but that particular bit seemed a little far-fetched and a little too convenient for Eleanor and her driver.
@FZero2daMAX Yeah, but as you saw, coming back down was a bitch. There was a lot more film shot on that plateau. I assisted the editing, and pushed for some of the better shots, but was overruled. I did get a "save" on one shot that I thought worked very well. That was the old lady hitting the car with her umbrella. Toby wasn't really looking at the comic relief at that stage, but when we screened the edited dailies, everyone just loved the old lady. I even suggested using her more..
@FZero2daMAX Probably depends on which Part 1 clip you view. One of these days, I'll dig out one of my originals and upload some parts with the original music. Toby's favorite, and mine too, was "The Lois Lane Blues". Crying shame Denise couldn't get everybody on the same copyright page for the re-release. I do admit though that they did improve the sound quality a lot.
The remake is so fake looking and over-the-top unrealistic (when did you last see a front heavy Mustang fly dead straight for over a mile in the air?), and edited by Michael Bay's typical MTV music video 2 second rapid cuts it quickly becomes tiring.
Not to mention most of it was shot with green screen. And all the kids and idiots go wow over that one. Fucking shame.
I prefer real driving, real stunts and realistic chases.
Toby H. B. Haliki did all the driving in this movie. There is a part where he spins and hits a light pole on the highway, they had to hold off filming because he got hurt.He was killed in a crash making the follow up movie. And yes they only used 1 Mustang to film the whole scene.
@UltimateWheelman That was Butch Stockton. Worked for a tow company and body shop in Gardena. Good friend of mine. Sadly, he passed away from a heart attack quite a few years ago.
@ExCHP Thanks. Sorry to hear he died. :( He was a scene stealer in this movie IMO because it seemed like he drove with no fear and his car control was amazing, so my respect goes out to him.
@UltimateWheelman Butch's partner in "Gone" was George Cole who worked for Toby at his auto/truck salvage. Both of them were in "Double Nickels". Not a Halicki movie, but produced by Toby's cameraman in "Gone". Butch was also in "The Junkman" a Halicki movie shot near where James Dean was killed in his Porsche.
Reason for pursute: unknown. Kind of remembers me about Irak, Afghanistan, Iran and Double Junior. Oh yes, and "civilian in the area", now since when does this stop the fuzz.
@UltraSuperFatMan the things tobbie got away with in this movie.. all in real time, real cops, no permits for filming, the dealer mess and the unexpected(the light pole crash) all instant and in one shot! for shure.. can't do it this real today.
@UltraSuperFatMan Toby used several Mach 1s to do the chase scene.. And believe it or not, he did this Movie with little of his own Money. It was mostly done on favors.
@UltimateWheelman that Mach 1 he did have to fix it because it was last one he had to use. If u watch the scene ion the beginning at the aiport, U will see a Rolls with the license plate HBH on it which stands for HB Halicki. he used most of his own vehicles in the movie.
I was the actor at 7:14. "Shit, I don't know. I'm gonna run that son a bitch down." I crashed at 8:13. This movie was a total gas to work. Toby was my good friend before and after "Gone", and I will always remember him.
This is 100 times better car chase than the N Cage film. I saw it on speed channel after, the remake film was out for a few years...Its just realistic, plus I was a little kid in Los Angeles and it just dazzling to see how it was back when I was in grade school. The 2nd is kind of an update and tribute to the original and it doesnt hurt that it made some money also.
I'll bet the subframe was notch cut, with oxyacetalene torch since it was 1973. and it was probably loosely bolted and/or spot welded in a fwe places to obtain that kind of damage.
Halicki was a body man. So am I. I'll bet he used the same techniques I've seen used.
Oh yeh, I forgot about those other bits. .that stunt in 0.51 is CLASS!! there were two stuntMEN in that blue car. .nowadays they may allow a stuntwoman to double for the actress. .but can the female body take such an impact? . .(not trying to sound sexist!)
