im having the problem where its misfiring and its really bad that my check engine light came on. ive tried everything,(spark plugs, tested wires, etc) so now im leaning on the fact that my fuel filter is bad. is that what it most likely is??
I would not attempt to do this without a KD Tools 3321 Ford Fuel Line Quick Disconnect tool or similar tool. There is just no access to the quick connect on the inlet side with a screw driver, and although, I have not used this tool yet (I will have to go buy one), it looks like you can use it to disconnect the clamp even if the two ends are facing away from you and are facing a wall. I am just letting you know so you don't suffer the same frustration I am experiencing at the moment.
@LarryLane07 Well, I did get the inlet side off with just a screwdriver, and it wasn't really that hard after all. I got under the car from the drivers side this time, and I guess that gave me better access.
Those quick disconnects are a real pain to get off because the ends you need to push up are facing away from you. I got one off but I don't know how I am going to get the the other one because it is facing the opposite direction and is up against the floor pan. It seems like Ford deliberately complicates things so yo uwill take it to them instead of fixing it yourself.
@robeadamsatl05 you have to squeeze the ends of the clamp together and push it through the "clamp housing." I just changed mine. the very top one is a pain in the ass. i had the benefit of a lift at my disposal and it took about 10 minutes. it'll probably take 30 or more if you're working on your back. there's not a lot of space to work in.
Thanks man, I couldn't have done it without your video as I am not a mechanic and have virtually NO experience with working on cars. This being the only Youtube video on hwo to change a fuel filter on a ford focus it helped alot.
Good video. But, just starting the car is probably more than enough to get rid of fuel pressure and all that pedal pumping I don't see what that's accomplishing this is not a carbd car. A couple cycles is usually enough to prime everything.
Ok so I changed my fuel filter before I watched your video. Is it possible that since I didn't Depressurize the fuel system and remove the fuze that now that I have everything back in that it would cause my car to hesitate when driving. Usually between 25 to 45 miles per hour.
@beregood22 well dirt or other things may have found thier way into the fuel system, air pocket may have formed or filter may be backwards or even the wrong filter was installed. also check for leaks while its running around the filter and lines.
Pretty cool...my Nissan's is right in the engine bay and the Focus not being a full-frame car , I wouldnt have thought it would be under the back end.
Next time back the car onto the ramps for a bit more room.
Thank you, The service Manual sucks on this car. Omg. What a tight squeeze and I am a small woman. There is more head room if you use the ramps on the back tires.. Thanks I appreciate your video
some filters are different, some it doesnt make a difference which way they go, but when you remove always take note which way it goes, if you have to mark it... but if you fit it the wrong way, it will prob not draw enough fuel through.
@TannieBebe most likely on some cars it will do nothing . but i never installed a filter the wrong way because theres indicators on the old filter sometimes but always on the new.
Good demo on relieving fuel system pressure. Describes but doesn't show how to work the quick disconnects for the fuel filter. A bit too much time on unrelated parts and subjects. Thanks.
@danielw1958 quick disconnects were the easiest to remove. they are plastic and the new filters usually come with new clips. they are shaped like horseshoes or a U. theres a flat spot on the clip on top for prying. they just pop out. but not all the way unless you fenangle it.
My buddy is on his way here for me to do the fuel filter on his 2000 focus. This video was very informative. Thanks man!

For some reason I cant get those damn plastic hose clamps off of both ends of the filter.
Anyone have a step bu step of how to do so? They seem so fragile I was afraid I was going to break them.

if u reverse the fuel filter by mistake, will it cause it to sputter and run rough just like a bad fuel pump symptom?

if i give too much gas it becomes hesitant to do and revs like its going fast but has waayyy less power
and if i have the ac on at idle itll come verrry close to stalling, its not my alternator because i just replaced it
thanks for the help!!
