@kraziekid8 I hear your pain. Hopefully... one day it will hit the PSN, and perhaps some other good shmups will be made for NGP and 3DS too. Handhelds FTW.
"This game basically consists of shooting everything that's coming at you..."
Ugh, does nobody else even attempt to chain in Ikaruga? If I had just watched this review without any prior knowledge, I would have easily just written Ikaruga off as another shmup. The chaining system is what makes this game so amazing and almost all reviewers seem to just ignore it for some reason.
In this game chaining is when you destroy three of the same color enemies. Destroying an enemy of the opposite color resets your Chain. Chains increase your score dramatically and will earn you extra lives sooner. The opposite end of the spectrum would be Dot Eating. Which is where you just absorb bullets and don't kill anything. Including bosses. After a set period of time bosses will retreat regardless of health.
You clearly under estimate the power of stupid people on the internet. I'm actually glad you were being sarcastic. Because it's something that you could google for. I see my error was trying to be nice to someone I thought was as dumb as a post. Because, you know, treating people like shit is the best way to get them interested in your fandom.
The replay saving is disabled when you choose to allow continues because the point of downloading replays is to study the strategies of players who can score well, by chaining as many enemies as possible. If you're continuing in a shooter, you're usually ignoring the finer points of its mechanics (and resetting your score to zero with every credit), and so watching a replay would be of no value, even to yourself. The point is to score well, not merely to bully your way to the end. ;)
hmm wait a minute you are complaining about the replay - no credit rule??? geesh man, haven't you ever heard of the 1cc rule... i mean why post a replay of a scrub??? that's right if you are going to show off to the world - you should be worth watching right? The game is actually not that hard compared to other shmups, until you start playing for combo's then the difficulty goes up... for hard try dodonpachi, mars matrix, etc...
I've heard of Ikaruga when it was only in Japan/Game Cube. Despite the fact that I've lived in Japan for about 8 years, I've never played Ikaruga. But then it came to XBLA (thank god!) and I love it! I can never get bored, almost every day I play it! Great review, thank you for giving it a 90%, usually people don't understand the game and say it sucks because it's hard and they don't understand it at all. Great review overall!
hahaha you say its not that hard because you aint playing it on hard.

Im wrong about the dc version being superior? I know slowdown is a part of many shmups, and on purpose.

can you play this game without conectiong to the internet???

I think this is one of the most perfect top-down shooters ever.

From what I have read on shmups, the lag is welcomed by these shmup players. it just helps out in real intense situations.
funkycoldm3dina 1 year ago
@funkycoldm3dina
Pssh, shmup players need no help from lag! the faster the better!
I've heard that none of the releases are as good as the dc one, but I've only played my GC version

@dunpeal2064
Wrong.
You should do some more reading up on this genre instead of spreading disinformation.

Nice review, cleared up a lot for me, thanks. I think i'll pick this up now, i was on the sidelines but now i think i'll really enjoy this game.
I think it's a shame Deathsmiles and other bullet hell shooters aren't getting released here in the west but oh well, this should be really fun.

That boss explosion slowdown was also in Gradius V. Must be something of a Treasure tradition.

I can understand a console ports copying the slow down for hard patterns in bullet hell shmups but thats is hardcore

Street Fighter movie? :P
I'm surprised no mention of the chaining system in Ikaruga. Probably the most important aspect of the game.
